Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b- 7, 12-13). Gospel Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23). RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT At last! The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. Try to listen to today s scripture passages with some sense of how electrifying these events must have been to those who lived through them. Up until now, they have been waiting in the upper room. In today s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today s Gospel reading, Receive the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Only they didn't call it Pentecost. That's the Greek name. The Jews called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. It was the celebration of the beginning of the early weeks of harvest. Pentecost was the celebration of the beginning of the early wheat harvest, which meant that Pentecost always fell sometime during the middle of the month of May or sometime in early June. According to the Old Testament, you would go to the day of the celebration of First Fruits, and beginning with that day, you would count off 50 days. The fiftieth day would be the Day of Pentecost. So First Fruits is the beginning of the barley harvest and Pentecost the celebration of the beginning of the wheat harvest. Since it was always 50 days after First Fruits, and since 50 days equals seven weeks. Therefore, they either called it the Feast of Harvest or the Feast of Weeks. According to Jewish Law, all the adult Jewish men would come from wherever they were living to Jerusalem and personally be in attendance during this celebration as Pentecost was a huge Jewish holiday. Finally, there were certain celebrations and sacrifices and offerings which were prescribed in the Law for the day of Pentecost. On Pentecost, the High Priest was to take two loaves of freshly baked wheat bread and offer them before the Lord. The wheat bread was made from the newly harvested wheat. Pentecost in the time of the Apostles was a great and grand harvest celebration. The streets of Jerusalem were clogged with thousands of pilgrims who had come from every point of the compass to celebrate the goodness of God and the bringing in of the wheat harvest. This feast is still celebrated in Judaism as Shavuot. Later, in the Christian liturgical year, it became a feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ (120 in all), as described in the Acts 2:1 31. For this reason, Pentecost is sometimes described by some Christians today as the "Birthday of the Church." Suzy Jones and Teri Burton are long-time CTK parishioners and board members of the Tugboat Society who made the plea for our food pantry to receive $1,000 recently. NEVADANS FOR THE COMMON GOOD Are you interested in being a part of our parish group which supports the local organization, Nevadans for the Common Good? They are a voice for the voiceless here in Las Vegas. As Christians, we are called to embrace the problems that face our local community. We can do this individually, working with our neighbors, or also, we can act as the body of Christ, working towards more just policies on the issues of the vulnerable around us: the elderly, immigration and integration, human trafficking, public education, health care, and neighborhood blight. Call Linda at (702) , if you would like to learn more about this opportunity to share with others in your experience of grief. 120 FIRST GRADE STUDENTS FROM MARION EARL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL VISIT MANNA CUPBOARD Sixty students on Tuesday, May 20 th, and sixty students on Thursday, May 22 nd, tramped from their school on Reno Avenue, and down Torrey Pines to our church a couple of weeks ago, carrying their food contribution to give to our food pantry. Instigated by Linda Boulton, a first grade teacher at Marion Earl, and the school counselor, Lisa Ajemian, six classes of first graders helped volunteers make up bags of food to be distributed to the poor and made cards of good wishes to be included. During their morning stay at Christ the King Catholic Community, the students were able to see the meeting rooms which had been transformed into bedrooms for the Family Promise guests staying with us. The teachers, chaperones, and students were profoundly appreciative for the opportunity the students had been given to participate in such a hands-on program so close to their school. On our part, CTK volunteers were impressed with the students questions, behavior and their teachers who had taken the time to expose their students to these opportunities to serve so early in their young lives. One little girl wrote: Dear Homeless people, If you don t have anything that you need, I can let you live with me if you want. I can give you some things that you need. Love, C!!!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS Before there was water, there was fire. Once in a while, a volcano hints at the sizzling magma upon which the whole human enterprise floats. Over eons, the surface cooled off a bit, and rain sizzled down for thousands of centuries, filling the oceans and sculpting the earth. We Christians can catch God s glory in a shimmering pool of water, but we can also capture God s burning desire to fan the tiny flames of our baptismal candles into something that will make a difference. In Sicily to this day, there is a custom of scattering rose petals down from the ceiling of church on the heads of the faithful, an effective reminder of the tongues of flame descending on the apostles, and a sign that the Holy Spirit still is poured out on the baptized. It is not merely a quaint custom, but a fairly potent sign of what baptism does. An interesting sidebar: if you have traced the Epiphany blessing on your doorway in chalk, Pentecost is the day to erase it. From now on, no need to rely on the wise men you are alive in the Spirit! Este santo apóstol de Brasil fue beatificado en 1980 gracias a sus grandes esfuerzos humanitarios, literarios y evangelizadores en Brasil. Llegó a Brasil en 1553 donde aprendió Tupí, el idioma de los nativos. Enseñaba a los indígenas, evangelizándolos con la doctrina cristiana y educándolos en historia, filosofía y medicina. Eventualmente fundó el colegio jesuita de São Paulo de Piratininga donde tuvo la audacia de educar, junto a los hijos de los nativos, los hijos de los portugueses. Para este esfuerzo escribió muchos libros y manuales, cosa que le mereció ser el primer escritor en Brasil. 7 LITURGY CORNER Something New and Exciting Coming to Christ the King How quickly the time has passed since January of 2010 when Fr. Bill asked myself and Cathy to be in charge of both the Music and Liturgy Departments for the parish after Mary Jane Leslie retired. Having said yes to the task at hand the ministry has proven to not only be personally rewarding but also extremely challenging in trying to maintain a balance between both music and liturgy. So, in prayer and keeping both ministries in mind, I approached Fr. Ray and asked him to consider bringing on board a separate Director of Music for the parish, someone who could give their sole concentration to only music. Fr. Ray agreed that Liturgy is the number one priority and as we want to keep our music vibrant and strong and of the same excellent quality we re known for, he has agreed to bring on board Ellen and Ken Lerum, as the new Music Director Team here at Christ the King. Ellen and Ken are a married couple currently working in Music Ministry here in the Diocese at St. Peter s on Boulder Highway. They are degreed musicians, have an extensive background in instrumental and vocal music as well as being able to service the needs of the Spanish speaking community and our Spanish language mass. They are tech savvy and have much to offer in the integration of technology into our music program. We will welcome Ellen and Ken the weekend of June 15 th to the CTK community. They will be playing/directing for the 7:30, 1:30 and 4 pm masses on that Sunday and covering any of the masses that I would normally be playing for each weekend. As a team they will be dividing up the duties between them. As the new parish directors, they will build upon the foundation that has been set here and take our music program to a new level. It is our hope to develop a regular Children s Choir, a Youth Choir to name a few as well as to add more singers and instrumentalists to all of the music groups that minister at our liturgies. With this will now come the ability for me to be able to devote all of my efforts towards the liturgy as a whole. I will be able to attend all the masses at one time or another on the weekends as well as work with the various ministry groups on a more personal and individual basis, and be more available to help out where needed. I will still have my hand in music, playing for funerals during the week, and filling in on the piano when needed. Together we can have the best of both worlds for Music and Liturgy! This is an exciting time for our parish community. I thank Fr. Ray wholeheartedly for his support and ask you to welcome Ellen and Ken. 8 REFLEXIONEMOS SOBRE LA PALABRA DE DIOS REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Los discípulos tenían mucho miedo y con las puertas de la casa cerradas. El miedo tiene maneras de encarcelarnos y alejarnos del mundo exterior lo mismo que de nuestro mundo interior, y así nos desprovee de nuestra libertad para tener esperanza, imaginación y sueños. Podemos llegar a sentirnos cómodos trabajando en espacios estrechos, estando aislados y desencarnados, lejos de la vida y del contacto con los demás. Pero entonces llega el Señor resucitado con sus brazos extendidos, su corazón abierto y trayendo dones que van a transformar nuestra vida. El primer don del Señor resucitado es la paz o shalom, que significa todo lo bueno que se necesita, ya sea físico, mental o espiritual, para tener vida interior. Esta paz es un don que el mundo no puede dar. El segundo don es una misión: Somos enviados como Jesús fue enviado por el Padre. Adónde? Al mundo. Pues, tanto amó Dios al mundo que le dio a su Hijo único, para que todo el que crea en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna. Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenarlo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él (Juan 3:16 17). Ahora el Hijo envía a sus discípulos ( también a nosotros!) para ofrecer vida. El tercer don es el Espíritu Santo, para el perdón de los pecados. El Espíritu Santo es el don del Padre y del Hijo, que hemos recibido en nuestro bautismo y de nuevo en nuestra confirmación. Y los dones del Espíritu Santo se le dan a la Iglesia y a sus miembros para beneficio de todos, ya estén dentro o fuera de la Iglesia. Entre todos esos dones el primordial es el perdón. James A. Fear has a way of imprisoning, away from the outer world, but also from our inner world, taking away our freedom to hope, imagine, and dream. We can become comfortable working in cramped spaces, isolated and unattached, removed from life and contact with others. But then along comes the risen Lord, arms outstretched, heart wide open, bearing gifts to transform our lives. The first gift of the risen Lord is peace (shalom), which translates as all good things, physically, mentally, and spiritually all that is needed to be alive inside. This peace is a gift that the world cannot give. The second gift is a mission: we are sent, as Jesus was sent, by the Father. Where? To the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him (John 3:16 17). Now the Son sends the disciples us! to bring life. The third gift is the Holy Spirit, given for the forgiveness of sins. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Father and the Son, given to us at baptism, again at confirmation, and whose gifts are given to the church and its members for the good of all, within and outside the church. Small Church Communities; a way of being church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community! These informal gatherings for coffee and conversation are held 7:00 pm each Thursday (except major holidays) in Room 5 of the Activity Center. Elementary Registration for 2013/14 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office M-TH 8-4:00 pm - Closed from 12-1:00 pm A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for each child being registered. REQUIREMENTS: Family must be registered at Christ the King Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering When are classes held? Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 5:45 pm Fees: Religious Education Classes $80.00 per child. First Holy Communion $ per child. Full Initiation $ per child. $25 non-refundable deposit is required to register. Payment plans are available.
