Psalm Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading In one Spirit we are baptized into one body (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13) or Romans 8:8-17. Gospel Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission (John 20:19-23) or John 14:15-16, 23b-26. The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among nations with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The result was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same language among themselves. Today s reading from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her own tongue. This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve. One way is not higher, nor one person better than another. There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different works we do, acting through us. May 6 through May 10 Requests Adults and Children FAMILY PROMISE DATES AND PROTOCOL Our upcoming two dates in 2013 to serve families experiencing homelessness are August 25-Sept. 1 st and Nov th. You must have taken Protecting God s Children Seminar and have been fingerprinted in order to serve in this ministry. The parish is billed for your fingerprinting, and we would ask that any donation you can give towards helping with this expense would be greatly appreciated. Maryland Pkwy Saturday, June 15 th 11:00 AM This session will be conducted in Spanish STREET TEENS Homeless and at-risk teens orphaned or estranged from their families manage to spend a couple of nights with friends here and there. The non-profit organization, Street Teens, gives them a place to stop in for the day to get a shower, a clean change of clothes, a hot meal, and conversation with a loving volunteer who listens to them. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we are at the fiftieth day of the Easter celebration: seven weeks of seven days, a week of weeks, now culminating in a festival fiftieth day. While the liturgical color of the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the first thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800s. Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment. Las otras dos son la Pascua de Resurrección (o Pascua Florida) y la Pascua del Nacimiento de Jesús. Estas tres solemnidades cristianas celebran tres momentos claves en el plan de salvación: la Encarnación del Verbo Divino (Jesús), su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección y el descenso de su Espíritu Santo sobre la Iglesia. Pascua viene siendo el nombre de la principal solemnidad del calendario Judío y recuerda la liberación del pueblo de Israel de la esclavitud. Los cristianos hemos tomado ese nombre por reconocernos como descendientes de Abraham y porque en nuestras tres pascuas celebramos que Jesús viene a salvarnos, o sea, a liberarnos del pecado y sus consecuencias tanto personales como sociales. En muchas partes el titulo de Pascua se ha dejado para hablar de la Fiesta de la Navidad y la Fiesta de Pentecostés. Prayer is a lifting of the mind and heart to God. In the words of St. Teresa of Avila it is: an intimate friendship, a frequent heart-to-heart conversation with God, whom we know loves us. Prayer leads to a deep inner peace, helps us to find God in the ordinary activities of life, and assists us in loving our neighbor as ourselves. There is no need to register, just come. The more phlogiston, the more readily flammable was the way they understood physics inner workings. It explained why rocks did not burn and why straw readily did. Though phlogiston has long been shelved, its theory is not so far removed from how the Spirit of God burns in our lives, nor is it far from the gifts that God s Spirit sets aflame in us. If some effort of ours glows with light and heat, it may be a sign of much Spirit, sort of like phlogiston. On the other hand, if in our effort to shine there s not even a spark, it s quite likely that that is not where the Spirit has settled into us. It might be better to pay attention then to some other aspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where the Spirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the former does not cause us to stray from the latter. How does anyone know if they are where they should be? St. Paul says that the Spirit gives each of us our own dose of divine giftedness, our own spark with which to shine, but it s not given to us for our own glory or fun or feel-good self-image but for the good of others, for the community, for building up life. 10 Christian Formation Beth Thompson If you think you would like to become Catholic, or if you would just like to learn about Catholicism, we offer weekly opportunities to learn about the Catholic faith. These informal gatherings for coffee and conversation are held 7:00 pm each Monday (except major holidays) in Room 5 of the Activity Center. If, due to your schedule, you can t join us at our regular Monday night sessions, please call the parish office at and leave your name and phone number. We will do our best to accommodate you. Please contact Beth Thompson at ext. 230 if you have any questions. Those NOT registered in the parish MUST attend the monthly Newcomers Meeting. We require that you worship with us for at least six weeks before you call to register for the Alpha/Baptism sessions. Please call Robyn at ext. 232, M-F 8:00 am to 4:00 pm to register for the sessions. No Baptisms may be scheduled until sessions and requirements are completed. Elementary Registration for 2013/14 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office M-TH 8-4:00 pm beginning July 8, 2013 A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for each child being registered. REQUIREMENTS: Family must be registered at Christ the King Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering When are classes held? Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 5:45 pm Fees: Religious Education Classes $80.00 per child. First Holy Communion $ per child. Full Initiation $ per child. $25 non-refundable deposit is required to register. Payment plans are available. SACRAMENTS (1st Communion, Baptism) REQUIREMENTS: Same as for Religious Education Registration plus: Child is in second grade or above Child is enrolled in and attending weekly age-level Religious Education classes on a regular basis Unbaptized children must attend one full year of Religious Education first Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation process that requires the participation of the child and a parent or guardian in monthly sessions. Attendance at these sessions is mandatory.
