1 The Messenger Christ the King Catholic Community A Roman Catholic Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas NV; ~ (702) ~ Fax: (702) May 8, 2016 ~ The Ascension of the Lord Today s Readings First Reading Jesus tells the disciples that they will be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11). Psalm God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47). Second Reading God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:17-23) or Hebrews 9:24-28; 10: Gospel As Jesus blessed his disciples he parted from them and was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:46-53). MASS TIMES SATURDAY: 4:00 pm SUNDAY: 7:30, 9:30,11:30 am, 1:30 pm (Misa en Español) 4:00 pm WEEKDAYS: Mon - Sat ~ 8:00 am HOLY DAYS: 8:00 am and 7:00 pm CONTINUALLY PRAISING GOD In both the first reading and the Gospel we are told about Christ s glorious ascension into heaven. Paul s letter to the Ephesians reminds us that Christ has been seated at God s right hand in heaven, above every choir of angels. There might be a temptation to stay at an awed distance from Jesus Christ. However, the tone of today s readings is far from that temptation. The tone is exultant and the message is urgent. We are to be his witnesses, and the Gospel describes the first witnesses this way: [W]ith great joy... they were continually in the temple praising God (Luke 24:53). How can we continually praise God? The answer can be found in the second reading, in which Paul prays that God will give us a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in order to know Christ clearly (Ephesians 1:17). We cannot stand at a distance. We are to be enlightened and empowered. Cómo podemos alabar a Dios continuamente? La respuesta se encuentra en la segunda lectura, en la cual Pablo pide a Dios que nos conceda un espíritu de sabiduría y de reflexión para conocer a Cristo claramente (Efesios 1:17). No podemos mantenernos a distancia. Vamos a ser

3 INDIVIDUALISM GONE MAD! By: Brother Toby Starcross Community Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone. From: Growing an Inch by Stanley Gordon West Unfortunately it seems that for some of my fellow citizens that is a pretty un-american idea. My joy is mine alone and you have no right to have any part of it! Before despairing about the epidemic of It's all about me let's go back a few centuries and recall some far more subversive ideas from John Donne ( ). In 1624 he wrote his famous Meditation XVII which later became a familiar poem. Donne had a really hard life. He and his wife had 12 children and his income was practically nil. Although Donne was a clergyman, one biographer points out he was so desperate that he had to resort to acting as a lawyer to put food on the table. In Meditation XVII Donne points out that the adversities and the joys of any one of us belong to all of us because we are connected. We are, in fact kin. When a child is baptized or a person is buried That action concerns me: all humankind is of one author. And a bit later on, he writes his well known lines: No one is an island, entire of itself; every one is a piece of the continent a part of the main. Any person s death diminishes me, because I am involved in humankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. A second-generation Syrian friend living in the United States wrote me recently that there was a word in Arabic that seems to mirror John Donne's meditation. The word is soumoud and it means the steadfast kinship of people who are standing in solidarity with each other in adversity or joy and moving together through the whole cycle of life. Parents who see their children killed in Syria or starving in Yemen are dramatically aware of the kinship that binds them together. I do not sense much of this kinship in our own country and especially not in the electoral process we are enduring. At this point in the political circus there are those doggedly driving home that the common good or trouble has absolutely nothing to do with ME. And if you think the same way VOTE FOR ME! And sometimes I fear that this attitude become the mainstream of my country. We will soon find out. In reviewing my book Thinking With The Heart, a critic once wrote of me that I was well-meaning but incredibly naïve and seemed to be wanting to return to the make love not war fantasy of the 1970s. If anything that critic would think I have become even more naïve, because I am confident that somewhere there are enough people, misfits perhaps, who are trying to share the joy and the sorrow of those around us, who are trying to be kin to each other. And my hope is that group will grow. I cry with my own grief and also with yours. I have pain for the people who cannot afford to rent a house. For single mothers living below the poverty line and attempting to raise their children in this over privileged society. And I want to feel joy wherever love enriches our existence when two people find each other, when a child is born, when a family is fed. When your shy little niece with learning difficulties has found a good friend let us all rejoice. When a faithful dog who never judged you died, let us all grieve. For we are kin to each other whether we like it or not! When the little flowers open and the bird sings, or when the bell tolls let us smile or cry together for we are kin. Soumoud! LITURGY CORNER May 8 ~ The Ascension of the Lord/7 th Sunday of Easter As we continue our journey of faith with Christ, we reflect... In the gospel today Jesus prays for the disciples he prays for all of us today, that we may be one with him and the Father in unity. Our work then is to help the world come to unity, to glory and to be transformed. What will you do this week to help others be more united in faith, in understanding and in love with each other? How can you be an instrument of unity in your circumstances?

His emphasis on the tenderness of mercy versus judgment and condemnation is a welcome relief to all men and women. In this series, we will consider mercy in a variety of ways: God, as the source of mercy; the seven spiritual works of mercy and the seven corporal works of mercy; and being merciful to oneself. Father Max Oliva is a Jesuit priest of the California Province. He has resided in the Vegas valley since He has been presenting parish missions, retreats, and evening series for over thirty years. He is the author of numerous books on spirituality and ethics. His newest book, Becoming a Person of Mercy, will be published by Twenty-Third Publications in July of

6 Treasures from Our Tradition The Second Vatican Council decreed that the devotional life of the Church should be examined and reformed with an eye towards expressing Easter faith. This encouragement for creativity has deep roots in our tradition, and some attempts at reform show great promise. One of the great treasures in our devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of Lent: the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path recalling the events of Christ s passion, a contemplative experience increasingly enriched these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen stations in the usual configuration, although in recent years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a similar journey structured on the theme of the appearances of the Risen Lord? Over the last decade, a Via Lucis, or Way of Light, has developed as a companion to the Via Crucis. It has been celebrated at the Vatican and is catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the Women Carrying Spices to the Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the apostles wait with Mary for the advent of the Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers, and liturgists. This is a living example of how many of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It may even come soon to a church near you. Maybe next Eastertime! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Ascension of the Lord "Until next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!" Not today's scriptural wisdom, but legendary DJ Casey Kasem's sage advice, heard across America for generations, American Top 40's challenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn't quoting scripture, today's Acts of the Apostles offers similar advice. As Jesus ascended, disciples "were looking intently at the sky." Wouldn't we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heartbreaking focus on this blood-stained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus' first disciples, "Why are you standing there looking at the sky?" Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should "keep reaching for" heaven, we need to "keep our feet on the ground." Ascension's scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as "ascended into heaven" lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our recognition and loving service. WAIT FOR THE SPIRIT, GO BE MY WITNESSES Dear God, what is your will for me-- exactly? Your plan--for this whole world? Your path to peace-- guaranteed? How discouraging when sometimes we don't understand. Or have to admit that, though being Jesus' disciples forever, we still don't love as Jesus taught us. But take courage! "Are you going to restore the Kingdom to Israel now?" Imagine! After three years of enjoying Jesus' daily teaching and devoted friendship- -Jesus, who declared, "my kingdom is not of this world"--disciples still asked the wrong question--even after Jesus had been crucified! So, almost wearily, Jesus answered, "Not for you to know. You'll receive power when the Spirit comes." Power for what? "You will be my witnesses--to the ends of the earth!" We've also received that Spirit--and assignment. Now Jesus, ascending to enter heaven's sanctuary, lifts us up from discouragement and bestows hope. In today's Gospel, Jesus declares that not even cruelly inflicted suffering can frustrate God's saving plan. Jesus crucified still reaches out, unconditionally, to heal every broken heart with reconciling love. PRAYER AND SERVICE, CITY AND TEMPLE Jesus' ascension sent those first disciples--and now sends us--down the mountain that Jesus had left, to serve him still living and needy in the world. But today's Gospel also shows those disciples "continually in the temple praising God." The Acts of the Apostles adds a further detail, quite appropriate for May, the month traditionally dedicated to Mary. Until Pentecost, the apostles "devoted themselves with one accord to prayer, together with Mary the mother of Jesus." Announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis described Mary's life as modeled on Jesus, God's mercy-made-flesh. At the foot of Jesus' cross, when Mary heard Jesus forgive the executioners, she understood that her Son's mercy is unconditional, extended to everyone, no exceptions. From now until Pentecost, we should pray the Holy Spirit to pour forth upon us, and upon the whole world, the grace to live Jesus' unconditional, forgiving mercy.

Through work, parents help to meet their needs and the needs of their children. They fulfill their roles as guardians and providers. While the need to work does take away from time spend as a family, it also offers the opportunity for parents to set and example of commitment to support the family and of working together with others to get a job accomplished. Children can also learn from work through the simple responsibilities of performing chores --feeding the pets, taking out the garbage, helping with the dishes, etc. They learn they are responsible for their own actions, how to be part of a team and the satisfaction that comes with labor well done. God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy; the LORD, amid trumpet blasts. -- Psalm 47:6 Jesus raised his hands and blessed them. Jesus prayed for his disciples and us to know and believe the good news of the Gospel! Open your heart and allow God s love to transform all areas of your live including your marriage. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is on May To apply online, or for other weekend dates visit or call (702) (Para los fines de semana en español, por favor visite o llame a Javier Maria Lopez After praying together, consider the following weekly discussion question How is work--whether breadwinning employment, chores, or care--a daily expression of love in our family? Give an example. 2. Why do I work or do things for our family? How can I work more lovingly? 3. What are some common, simple and human virtues? What makes them true and authentic, or false and inauthentic? 4. Are there ways that work is a source of tension for our family? How can I resolve the tension and make my work more a source of joy and love for the rest of the family? 5. Modeling Jesus working with Joseph, how can I help others in our family with the ways they contribute, or let them know that what they do matters?
