4 A Word from Fr. Ray We have finally powered up the Activities Center with the solar panels for our contribution to using renewable energy. It will take a few months to figure out the savings and we are so blessed to have had this opportunity to keep our power down. Hopefully we can get the whole campus using renewable energy, and we are working on that as well, and prospects are looking good. Thank you for your support in these efforts to get some of the projects completed within the terms of our five year plan. The new sidewalk is working out great, and many of our parishioners are grateful to have a smooth area to negotiate the courtyard. I would like to express some concern that people are driving vehicles on the new sidewalk. The sidewalk is not designed for vehicular use and the weight of vehicles will crack the cement. Please do not drive on the sidewalk. The end of the CSA year is coming to an end, and we need to make our pledges good. So if you have not been making contributions for your pledges, please be sure to make your contributions. We are currently $25, from our goal and we only have 3 ½ months to the end of the pledge period for Questions for Sunday September 14, 2014: What modern use of the Seraph is seen today? 5 O U T R E A C H ATTEND THE NEXT RECRUITMENT MEETING OF THE NEVADANS FOR THE COMMON GOOD There will be an organizational and recruitment meeting on Tuesday, September 16th at 7:00 pm at the University United Methodist Church located at 4412 S. Maryland Parkway. Come help us represent our parish at this ecumenical meeting of the Nevadans for the Common Good. This group is a voice for the voiceless here in Las Vegas. As Christians, we are called to embrace the problems that face our local community. We can do this individually, working with our neighbors, or also, we can act as the body of Christ, working towards more just policies on the issues of the vulnerable around us: i.e. the elderly, immigration and integration, human trafficking, public education, health care, and neighborhood blight. Leslie Carmine of Catholic Charities said they need extra volunteers to accommodate the numbers. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult. VISIT THE SICK COMFORT, THE AFFLICTED We are called as Christians to these Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. This is an opportunity to put our faith into action. Our parish is once again offering training for Ministers of Care, which is for anyone who would like to learn to learn to minister in a health care facility, hospital, or to the homebound of our parish. The training will be provided on five consecutive Thursday evenings from 7 PM to 9PM, at CTK in our Community Center, on September 11 th, 18 th, 25 th and October 2 nd, and 9 th. 8 With the start of the new school year and everything gearing up again we wanted to make you aware of a few things Liturgically speaking for us here at CTK: We are in GREAT need of volunteers in ALL the liturgical ministries. I ve included in the bulletin a separate article on New Reader and New Eucharistic Minister training session coming up. If anyone is interested in volunteering for ANY ministry (Reader, Eucharistic Minister, Musician (Singer or Instrumentalist), Sound & Lighting Person at Mass, Hospitality, Bread Baker, Mass & Table Coordinator, Martha & Mary Guild) please contact either Mary Ryan or Cathy Bruzzese in the office at (702) for further information. Daily Chapel Seeking to answer the current spiritual needs of our parish community, we will be putting a fresh face on the Daily Chapel situated to the left of the Gathering Space as you walk into church in response to the many parishioners who have asked for a more private and quiet place of prayer before mass. In order to accommodate this need and at the same time holding true to the founding spirit of Christ the King in our hospitality and welcoming atmosphere of greeting/visiting with one another before mass in the main church, we have decided to use the Daily Chapel for this purpose as the current Eucharistic chapel on the west side of the church building is just not large enough. The week of September 22 nd, we will be taking the tapestry of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of all the Americas, from the Gathering Space and placing it in the Daily Chapel along with two other matching tapestries that depict San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first canonized Filipino saint and the image of Christ under the title of The Divine Mercy. The three tapestries will be placed on the north wall of the Chapel along with two small banks of candles that can be lit (electronically) for your prayer intentions. Real candles will not be used due to cost and safety factors. Two kneelers will also be placed in front of the tapestries to complete that portion of the chapel space. These works of art are being made for us by the artist John Nava who designed our original tapestry of Our Lady of Guadalupe and who also designed the tapestries that are in the Cathedral in Los Angeles. They have been paid for by the generous donations of you, our community, through the various fund raising events over the past several months and the dedicated hard work of many of our parishioners. To you and all who have worked so lovingly, we thank you greatly! Just a note the Daily Chapel will still be set up and available to be used for smaller services as in the past and for our November Chapel of Remembrance of the dead. Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz Sunday, September 28, 2014 We will be dedicating the new tapestries and Daily Chapel space in conjunction with the celebration of the 4 pm mass on Sunday, September 28, 2014 which is the actual feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz. Following the Mass and dedication, there will be the annual dinner/dance sponsored by our Filipino community in the Community Center. Tickets are available and must be purchased before the event. Space is limited. Collection at CTK IMPORTANT LITURGY NEWS The weekend of September 20-21, 2014 we will begin offering an additional option for those who might find it difficult to leave your seat for the collection during mass or for those who might not want to come up to the altar platform at that time. The collection will take place as usual with the Presider inviting everyone forward with their offerings of parish support and food for the hungry poor. The candles will be moved from the ambo and placed by the altar platform as we normally do as well. When the Presider or Deacon goes to the altar to prepare the gifts, our hospitality ministry will come to each section of the church and pass a basket for your offerings. Please keep in mind this passing of the basket does NOT replace that of coming forward with your money and food. It is an OPTION. Lay Presiders Several Lay Presiders have been trained to step in and lead the community in prayer at a Liturgy of the Word Service with Communion in the event that a Priest does not come for a Mass. The Lay Presiders will be called upon if there is no Priest and if one of the Deacons cannot be reached. Please note that these Lay Presiders have been trained according to the official documents of the church. The services very much resemble that of our Sunday mass with the exception of the consecration and some of the other parts of the Eucharistic liturgy. For example, in these services the Gloria is omitted. If you are present when a Lay Presider does lead the prayer, know that they are doing so under the complete authority and direction of the Pastor and Director of Liturgy. The service is a VALID observance of the obligation to attend mass. Again, we thank these wonderful people for agreeing to respond in such an emergency.

10 Christian Formation Beth Thompson If you think you would like to become Catholic, or if you would just like to learn about Catholicism, we offer weekly opportunities to learn about the Catholic faith. These informal gatherings for coffee and conversation are held 7:00 pm each Thursday (except major holidays) in Room 5 of the Activity Center. If, due to your schedule, you can t join us at our regular Thursday night sessions, please call the parish office at (702) and leave your name and phone number. Elementary Registration for 2013/14 year Grades 1-5 in the Religious Ed Office M-TH 8-4:00 pm - Closed from 12-1:00 pm A BAPTISM CERTIFICATE is required for each child being registered. REQUIREMENTS: Family must be registered at Christ the King Family must be worshipping at Christ the King at our weekend liturgy Past due balances from the previous Religious Education year must be paid prior to registering When are classes held? Classes are held on Wednesdays at either 4:00 or 6:00 pm SACRAMENTS REQUIREMENTS: (1st Communion, Baptism) Same as for Religious Education Registration plus: Child is in second grade or above Child is enrolled in and attending weekly age-level Religious Education classes on a regular basis Unbaptized children must attend one full year of Religious Education first Our sacrament preparation is a family preparation process that requires the participation of the child and a parent or guardian in monthly sessions.
