Faith Formation When you are a member of a community, one of the best aspects of being involved is meeting and knowing its members. How well do you know Jesus? As noted in today s Gospel, Jesus will acknowledge us to the Father; this can only happen when we are full members of the community and we know him. For those among us who are not Catholic, we invite you to consider taking a journey to receive the Sacraments to become a full member of the Catholic Faith. The Rite of Catholic Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is used by our parish as means to instruct and prepare people for this journey. For those of our congregation who are Catholic, do you know someone who is seeking a community like ours? Please invite them to join us. Classes begin in September; now is the time to learn more about the RCIA journey. 3 Faith Formation Dear SJCS Parents and Parishioners, The staff at St. Joseph Catholic School has spent the last year researching the benefits of implementing a STEM Smart Lab at St. Joseph Catholic School. We discovered that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers are growing faster than any other job market, and our staff recognized the need to better cultivate students curiosity within these fields at a much earlier age. Last year, we piloted a coding class using SPHERO, a robot, with our eighth grade students, and a spark was ignited. Supported by our Long Range Strategic Plan, and backed by research as well as guided by the new International Society for Technology in Education Standards, St. Joseph Catholic School is excited to announce the implementation of a STEM Smart Lab into our students academic day beginning this fall. The STEM curriculum is based on educating students within the four disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, but it is done so using an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. This education model has the ability to provide our students the necessary critical thinking skills for today s globally competitive and technologically driven economy. At SJCS, we are also incorporating the Arts into our new lab with learning engagements focused on the digital arts and creative communications. We are excited to partner with Creative Learning Systems to bring this new, innovative STEM Smart Lab to St. Joseph Catholic School. This fall, we will begin with the standard curriculum offered by CLS and hope to expand our course offerings once additional funds have been secured to include more advanced lessons that will enhance critical thinking skills. Construction is well underway in our media center to transform that area into our STEM Smart Lab. The traditional media center classes, which have successfully prepared students in all grades to use technology in their learning as well as led to the successful implementation of the 1:1 Chromebook program in grades 4-8, will move to our library space as it is being transformed into a library/media center. This is an exciting time at St. Joseph Catholic School! Through this link, I invite you to take a look at what we have planned for our students this fall. If you are interested in a tour of the school, please contact Tracy Lombardo, Director of Admissions, at and visit and as always, I thank you for your continued trust and support as I lead our great school. Sincerely, Anne Phoenix Principal, St. Joseph Catholic School 3
4 Faith Formation SAVE THE DATE Summer Meet & Mingle Event for all Women of the Parish Wednesday, August 2 7:00-9:00 p.m. Koenig Center Speaker: Linda Couri Wine, Cheese, Chocolate! Prayers for Vocations to the Priesthood Pope Francis said, The vocation is truly a treasure that God places in the hearts of some men, chosen by Him and called to follow Him in this special state of life. This treasure, that must be discovered and brought to light, is not made to enrich someone alone. He who is called to the ministry is not the master of his vocation, but rather the administrator of a gift that God has entrusted to him for the good of all the people, or rather for all humanity In support of the Archdiocesan request that parishes provide a Holy Hour to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and the Spiritual Formation Committee have scheduled Holy Hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays were chosen because it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. Please consider joining us as we pray for those who have been called. If you are unable to participate on Thursdays, we would like to provide an alternative for this prayer time by asking you to pray a short decade (ten Hail Mary s) of the rosary along with the prayer given each week for an increase in priestly vocations. This week s decade of the rosary: 1st Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection Our Lord s Resurrection brought tremendous joy to His sorrowful followers. Never were their lives to be the same again. Let us offer this decade for an increase in grace in the hearts of those who are being called to be priests and religious. May they experience the immense joy of giving God their entire lives and saying yes to His call. Help them to realize that their unselfish response to God will change their life forever. You Are Invited to consider being a Catechist - 4

Set your alarm or phone or take a break in your routine at home, pause where you are, and pray intentionally for peace in our homes, our cities, our state, our country and our world. Since July 2016, we have begun our prayer with Psalm 145:1, 13-21, the Prayer of St. Francis or the Prayer of St. John Paul II. Each week, we will offer a prayer or meditation you are welcome to use during the prayer time. It is also a good time to pray the Peace Rosary. Recite the Apostles Creed, then 7 times pray 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be, ending with Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us. Invite others to join you. Visualize our village and our nation united in prayer for peace and pray. Prayer for Peace - St. John Paul II To the Creator of nature and humankind, of truth and beauty, I pray: Hear my voice, for it is the voice of the victim of all wars and violence among individuals and nations. Hear my voice, for it is the voice of all children who suffer and will suffer when people put their faith in weapons and war. Hear my voice when I beg you to instill into the hearts of all human beings the wisdom of peace, the strength of justice and the joy of fellowship. Hear my voice, for I speak for the multitudes in every country and in every period of history who do not want war and are ready to walk the road of peace. Hear my voice and grant insight and strength so that we may always respond to hatred with love, to injustice with total dedication to justice, to need with the sharing of self, to war with peace. O God, hear my voice and grant unto the world Your everlasting peace. Amen. Leadership Needed for our St. Joseph s Windy City Tour For 23 years Dick and Janet Jacob organized this popular event for our parish, touring some very scenic and historic sites in Chicago. This was truly a Community Building event which was always sold out. We are all blessed to have had the Jacobs in our parish and for them to give of their time to organize this great event for years. The time has come to turn over the organization of this event to a new person or team. Dick has graciously offered to help the new leadership take over the planning. Now all we need is someone (or a team) to take over. If anyone is interested, please contact Gerry Salzman at gesint49@gmail.com or for more information. Help us carry on this wonderful tradition. Irish Set Dancing, similar to American Square Dancing, involves eight people dancing in a square or circle. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 10: Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord Jesus said to his apostles: Whoever loves father or a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet s reward, mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever and whoever receives a righteous man because he is loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; a righteous man will receive a righteous man s reward. And and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and ones to drink because the little one is a disciple amen, I say whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. to you, he will surely not lose his reward. Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection In the Lord s Prayer, Jesus taught us to pray, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Clearly, as faithful Catholics, when we are faced with challenging life decisions we should seek to know and do God s will. We pray, God, what do You want me to do? Unfortunately, fathoming the will of God can be daunting and frustrating. Perhaps it can become a bit easier by rephrasing the question and asking instead God, what is Your desire for me? Doing so puts the focus on the kind of person God wants us to be, rather than our actions. Next week s Scripture give us great insights into God s desire for each of us. In the first reading we see that God desires that we be happy and fulfilled, as revealed in the story of how God repaid the woman s kindness to Elisha by blessing her with a baby son. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that God desires us to be dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. He wants to free us from those things that tempt us, drag us down and burden our souls. Instead, we should live knowing we are (and will always be) loved and lovable. As we read the Gospel, we should not hear it as Jesus demanding our allegiance as much as His desire for us to know Him more deeply and intimately than we can know anyone on earth. To know Jesus is to know the Father. By inviting us into communion with the Father we can be brought into the awareness of His pure love for us. Jesus death on the cross is the ultimate proof of the unconditional love that God has for us. So as we are called to take up our cross, we do so knowing that God s desire for us is to be imitators of Christ, carrying His example of unconditional love into our daily lives. For further reflection on Taking up the Cross, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs 1435, 1615, 1642, 2015, 2029 and Reflection Questions 1. What do I see as God s desire for my life? Consider all of the attributes of the person God wants me to be. What do I most need to work on to become the person God wants me to be? 2. The original disciples were uniquely graced by physically experiencing Christ s loving presence in their lives. Jesus instituted His Church to carry those same graces forward for all who follow Him. Do I feel the grace of Christ s presence? What are the strongest sources? 3. God s desire for us is to be loving, kind and compassionate to others, even our enemies.
