3 Campus Renovations Continue The parish will soon begin the next two projects of St. Joseph Catholic Church s Master Plan. 1. Improved Church Lighting Church is currently 60-99% under-lit Phase 1 Church Lighting - funded Phase 2 Narthex Lighting - not funded 2. New Church Roof Roof is 26 years old and leaks not funded Total cost of the projects is estimated at $800,000, of which half of the cost will come from parish savings and rebates from the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign. We need your help raising the remaining $400, New Roof Details Later in the year a new roof needs to be installed on the church. A roof is expected to last 20 years and we are past the useful life of our roof. Maintenance of the current 26 year old roof continuously requires repairs. Recent repairs have been patching previous leaks as well as new ones. The heavy rains last summer and fall required buckets in some pews during Mass. The Facilities Committee recommends that the new roof be installed in early autumn to be ahead of the winter weather. The roof would be done before the narthex lighting, an indoor project. 1. Improved Church Lighting Details Phase 1 of the lighting plan (inside the worship space of the church) will replace 49 existing fixtures with LED lighting and add 48 new LED fixtures to the worship space, the confessional areas and candle stands. There will be a dimming control system to accommodate special services. This phase has already been fully funded by private donations. Phase 2 of the lighting project will replace the existing fluorescent lighting in the narthex with LED lighting. An analysis of the church s interior lighting by a lighting design expert found that all areas of the church sanctuary, worship space, confessional areas, entry vestibules, narthex, stained glass windows are 60% to 99% under-lit. LEDs use 40-70% less electricity than traditional lighting options and the heat generated by them is greatly decreased. This means that climate control costs like air conditioning will be reduced. LEDs have a general life expectancy of 50,000 hours. If they are used about 10 hours a day they will last about 13.7 years instead of the burnout rate of two years for traditional lighting. LEDs cost more initially but save money and maintenance over the long term. The Parish Finance Council, Pastoral Parish Council and Facilities Committee approved upgrading to the newer LED technology to reduce operating, air conditioning and maintenance costs while creating a beautiful and welcoming interior and preserving the church s prayerful environment. 3 Buckets catching rain water, rooftop leak area and open seams in roof (below) The plan to partially pay for the roof and narthex lighting is to use money already saved in the Capital Improvement Fund. To complete funding for the roof and narthex lighting, the blue General Capital Improvement Fund envelopes in parishioners packets will be renamed Roof and Lighting Fund this spring. Electronic donors can contribute to these important projects by selecting the Roof and Lighting Fund icon on the parish website at All donations received in those designated funding options will be used specifically for these projects, which must be fully funded before they can be started. ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ROOF & LIGHTING FUND Thank you for generously donating to the maintenance of our church

5 Faith Formation Editor s Note: St. Joseph s Vocations Team continues to pray for religious vocations and help engage people to learn about God s calling in their own lives and others. As part of their service, the team has collected stories from parishioners whose relatives and friends have followed God s call to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life, and will share one once a month in the Carpenter. God Called, He Responded: Fr. David Beauvais My youngest brother, David, is a retired priest in the Diocese of Rockford. He spent time during his school years with Msgr. Peter Meegan at Santa Maria del Popolo in Mundelein. Monsignor told David, following his education at Loras College, to choose the Rockford Diocese rather than the larger Chicago Archdiocese. and commitment to the priesthood. Of course, our mother loved him best. When Dave came home, he was treated royally. dren, marry them, and be there for each one of us in time of need. Even in retirement, David uses his degree in social work to counsel others and fill in for his brother priests as needed in the Rockford Diocese. As a large family whose children grew up in the 1940s and 1950s, our parents supported the idea of vocations. They were very happy to have a daughter who became a nun and a son who became a priest. We indeed have been fortunate. - Parishioner Cecile Harris The Vocations Ministry offers prayers for vocations with exposition and ado- St. Joseph Church. Please join us in praying that all people throughout the world will discern and accept the mission that God has planned for them. St. Joseph Catholic School s sixth graders headed to Camp Edwards in East Troy, Wisconsin last week for two days of teambuilding and outdoor adventures. On Wednesday morning, students, teachers and parents held a prayer service in the Koenig Center and then boarded buses to East Troy. They spent the next two days at an outdoor educational facility participating in a variety of team-building activities. The two-day adventure ended with an outdoor prayer service. For more than twenty years, SJCS students have enjoyed this wonderful tradition that enhances their faith and friendships. 8 Prayer & Worship Monday, March 19 Is the Feast of St. Joseph, our Patron Saint Is he not the carpenter s son? This Monday, March 19, we celebrate the feast of Saint Joseph, our Patron Saint. From Scripture, we know Joseph as a humble carpenter, dedicated to his family and obedient to the Lord s call staying true to Mary (Mt 1:18-25), seeking refuge for his family in Egypt (Mt 2:13-15) and ultimately set- The day has been celebrated for over a thousand years. It was established as a special feast of the whole of the Western Church in And, in 1870, Pope Pius IX named St. Joseph the patron and engineers, as well as of our parish. His death in the arms of Mary and Jesus has been projected as the model of the holy presence to be sought in prayer at the end of one s life. As a parish, we honor him with our Church and its art, Ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service Join an Ecumenical Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday at the North Pavilion at Independence Grove Forest Preserve on Route 137 just east of Millwaukee Avenue. Gates will open at 5:30 a.m., rain or shine; the service will begin at 6:00 a.m. and end by 7:00. This does not replace Easter Mass. Rather, it adds to our Easter celebration by giving us the opportunity to announce and share our Easter joy with our Christian brothers and sisters. As the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb The angel said to them, Do not be afraid Jesus the crucified has been raised Then they went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this Formation and Training for New Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist Here at St. Joseph Catholic Church on April 7 Sponsored by the Vicariate 1, Deanery ABC Ministry Commission Persons wishing to be Eucharistic Ministers are invited on Saturday, April 7 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon to a formation session in the Formation Center at 112 N. On his day, let us pray that the world will embrace that openness and love for others. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. Next Sunday s Gospel Mark 15:1-39 (Short version) Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin held a council. They bound was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate ques- to carry his cross. They brought him to the place of Golgotha which is translated Place of the Skull They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, You say so. The chief priests accused him of many things. Again but he did not take it. Then they crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take. It was they accuse you of. Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate nine o clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, The King of the Jews. With Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them one him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion. The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them ing, Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three - as he was accustomed. Pilate answered, Do you want me to release days, save yourself by coming down from the cross. Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and Pilate again said to them in reply, Then what do you want me to believe. Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him. At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the They only shouted the louder, Crucify him. So Pilate, wishing to scourged, handed him over to be crucified. said, Look, he is calling Elijah. One of them ran, soaked a sponge The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. let us see if Elijah comes to take him down. Jesus gave a loud cry with wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink saying, Wait, They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed and breathed his last. Here all kneel and pause for a short time. The it on him. They began to salute him with, Hail, King of the Jews! veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he knelt before him in homage. And when they had mocked him, they said, Truly this man was the Son of God! The Gospel of the Lord. stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. and led him out to crucify him. Reflection Lenten period of prayer, penance and almsgiving and we have one last chance to assess how we are doing. We are given the opportunity to redouble our efforts to grow spiritually closer to our loving God by embracing the teachings of His beloved Son. The Mass readings for Palm Sunday (consider reflecting on the Opening Procession reading, Mark 11:1-10 and the Passion narrative, Mark 14:1-15:1-39) prepare us to enter into the joys and sorrows of Holy Week. The first reading narrates how many of His disciples have come to believe in Jesus message and enthusiastically welcome His triumphant arrival in Jerusalem. Their hope is that Jesus will establish a new day and a new way of life for the children of Israel. Yet soon, in the Passion narrative, we will be reminded that even a profoundly good and loving message can be a threat to those who are invested in their old ways. We are reminded that change can be threatening and that we are called to follow His example and continue to be people of love and compassion all the way to the end no matter what price the world might wish to impose upon us. For further reflection on Palm Sunday, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs , Reflection Questions Readings for the Week Please see page
