1 The Carpenter December 3, st Sunday of Advent PREPARE... Community for the Kingdom St. Joseph Catholic Church Responding to Cardinal Cupich s Renew My Church Community for the Kingdom Get involved today! Community-for-the-Kingdom i n y o u r Heart... Life... Family... Community... St. Joseph Catholic Church Libertyville, Illinois 1
2 PREPARE... PREPARE A PLACE FOR JESUS IN YOUR HEART So much of the emptiness that continually resurfaces throughout our lifetime can be likened to our heart Heart... Crying Out For the Kingdom of God. The emptiness is our acknowledgment that something is indeed missing from our life. Life... The way the world celebrates the holiday of Christmas makes it difficult for us to remember that the Family... Christmas the Church celebrates is NOT Jesus birthday. The Church celebrates the extraordinary reality Community... that the divinity of God and our own humanity came together in the person of Jesus Christ. It celebrates the fact that God so loved the world that He sent His Only Begotten Son into the world so that we might know, firsthand, how to live so as to attain the Kingdom of God while we still live. The Church celebrates Jesus eternal presence. Thus, we know with certainty that we are never alone in life or in death. Jesus endlessly invites each of us to Come and See (John 1:39). The very first prayer prayed by the entire Church on this 1st Sunday of Advent asks that we might have the resolve to run forth to meet Christ. So, lift up your soul and open your heart to everything Jesus wants to gift you with this season. Be watchful. Be alert. Draw close to Jesus and see what He offers you. Don t delay. The sad reality is that most of us live our faith as if we were spiritually asleep. We go about our lives filling ourselves with all the things we won t need for life in the Kingdom. We produce fruit for today and fruit for our old age, but often produce little to secure our place in the heavenly Kingdom. The proof is in the state of the world. It is always easier for us to do things for ourselves and our own but are we doing anything for the salvation of the world? How will you change the way you live now, so that God s peace and God s justice can become the reality for all? i n y o u r Parish Advent Events Calendar 2017, St. Joseph Catholic Church Also accessible at Now through Sunday, December 17 Knights of Columbus selling Christmas Trees at Marytown on Saturday & Sunday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and on weekdays from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, December 3-1st Sunday of Advent Children s Liturgy of the Word at 9:00 a.m. Mass RCIA Dismissal at 10:45 a.m. Mass Giving Tree Tags available in the Church Wednesday, December 6 Women s Guild House Walk (10 a.m.-8 p.m.), Boutique (9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Koenig Center) Thursday, December 7 Holy Hour for Vocations, 3:00-4:00 p.m., Church Friday, December 8 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, A Holy Day of Obligation: Masses at 6:30 & 8:30 a.m. (School to attend), Noon and 7:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9 Reconciliation, 11:00 a.m.-noon, Church Saturday, December 9 & Sunday, December 10 Christmas Giving Tree Distribution Weekend in the School Gym. Prayer & Worship Central to the Christmas Season is the giving and receiving of gifts. Gifts speak to the love that we have for one another. We are a gift to others. Others are or have been a gift to us. This Christmas Season, as a way to remember those who have been a gift to us, you are invited to contribute towards the flowers that will grace our worship space during the Christmas Season. This might be in memory of a deceased loved one, someone who encouraged you in faith, or a friend or relative who gifted you with their guidance or their encouragement. Through these memorials the Christmas flow- ers will not just be decoration but a true garden of gifts representing those who have blessed our lives. Envelopes for this can be found on the tables in the back of church and are in your envelope packets. Simply fill one out with your contribution and drop it in the collection basket or send it to the parish office. During the Christmas Season the names of those remembered in our Gift Garden will be published in the Carpenter. May the beauty of our worship space this Christmas Season truly reflect the beauty of those lives that have touched our hearts and blessed our lives!

16 Breaking Open the Word 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. John was clothed in camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey. And this is what he proclaimed: One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. The Gospel of the Lord. Reflection In this week s Gospel, Jesus encourages us to always be prepared to give account for the choices we have made during our time on earth. In next week s Gospel, the story of John the Baptist provides us with an even more active approach to our Advent preparation, which will be to not only reflect on the coming of the Christ child but on our own Judgment Day. In John s ministry, we see him modeling Isaiah s exhortation to prepare the way of the Lord. Likewise, our task of making straight the highway for God in the wasteland of our own lives should conjure up opportunities of how to remove the barriers and obstacles which keep us from seeing Christ more clearly. We should look for ways to root out the temptations we encounter which keep us from experiencing Jesus presence in our daily lives. John the Baptist s desire was that his followers would be in the best position possible to recognize the greater one who was to follow and who would baptize them with the Holy Spirit. Our goal for Advent is to prepare our hearts and souls as a most worthy place for Christ to enter in and transform our lives. For this reason, the Church encourages us to take advantage of the sacrament of Reconciliation, which fills us with the grace to seek Christ more actively and to give Him more space in our lives. It is through those graces that Isaiah tells us what God will do in us: every valley [shall] be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low, the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley. We should remember as we prepare to make straight a pathway for the Lord that we are working on the very road on which we will ourselves walk. Why would we not seek to make that path as smooth and straight as possible, with Jesus walking at our side each step of our journey? For further reflection on Christ s mission and its importance to all, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs , and ; and on preparation for the coming of Christ, paragraphs Reflection Questions 1. The Scriptures encourage us to keep our line of sight to God as clear and direct as possible. What helps me to see God actively present in my life? What keeps me from straightening my pathway to holiness? Do I truly desire to find more space for God in my life? 2. The Scriptures over the past several weeks have encouraged us to be prepared and vigilant. The second reading next week (2 Peter 3:8-14) reminds us that we need to actively conduct ourselves in holiness and devotion. What do I do that might not be considered holy? How do I fail to show devotion and actively practice my faith? 3. As we prepare during this Advent season, we seek to clear away the sins of both commission and omission. In what ways have I failed to adequately heed the cry of the poor, the needy and the vulnerable in my family and my community? What specifically might I do to heed those cries this Advent and throughout the upcoming Church year? Readings for the Week Monday: Is 2:1-5; Ps 122:1-9; Mt 8:5-11 St. John Damascene Tuesday: Is 11:1-10; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lk 10:21-24 St. Nicholas Wednesday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Thursday: Is 26:1-6; Ps 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, St. Ambrose Friday: Gn 3:9-15, 20; Ps 98:1-4; Eph 1:3-6, 11-12; Lk 1:26-38 Saturday: Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Ps 147:1-6; Mt 9:35 10:1, 5a, 6-8 St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin Sunday: Is 40:1-5, 9-11; Ps 85:9-14; 2 Pt 3:8-14; Mk 1:1-8 16
