2 Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL archchicago.org November 1, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When Pope Francis announced that the First World Day of the Poor would take place on November 19, 2017, he stated that, Whenever we set out to love as Jesus loved, we have to take the Lord as our example; especially when it comes to loving the poor, reminding us once again that we should always care for our brothers and sisters affected by poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development answers Christ s call to action by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice in low-income communities through financial support of grassroots initiatives and transformative educational efforts. One such organization is the South Side Community Federal Credit Union. With the support of a CCHD grant, the SSCFCU has saved over 875 families from foreclosure through housing and credit counseling and has reinvested over $1 million in assets in the local economy through interest rate loans in neighborhoods that are otherwise vulnerable to high rates of poverty, unemployment, and financial instability. By emphasizing self-help, participation, and cooperation, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development s holistic approach leads to increased human dignity and stronger, more economically viable communities. To learn more about CCHD s impact in our communities or to donate online, please visit Your generous support of the CCHD Annual Collection, which will take place on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19, is the primary source of funding for over twenty organizations working to combat poverty and injustice in Cook and Lake Counties. It is my prayer that, as we prepare for the annual celebration of Thanksgiving Day, you consider contributing to CCHD through this secondary collection and keep its efforts in your thoughts and prayers. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago 2

Learn on November 18 You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God (Leviticus 19:34). We should serve others, as we would like to be served. We may struggle not knowing which path God wants us to travel down, but we need to have faith. We need to quiet our mind and trust in God that he will speak to us. We then need to listen. Come and listen on Saturday, November 18 and learn more about how our community is supporting the refugee crisis. Cathie Amin, from the Islamic Foundation North, will be sharing her story about journeying with the refugees in Greece. Roland Catherall, from St. Joseph Catholic Church, will be sharing an overview of the refugee crisis worldwide and the process the refugees go through. He will also be sharing some of the experiences St. Joseph parishioners have had with refugee support throughout the world. Saturday, November 18 Presentation and Reception in the Koenig Center will be following the 5:00 p.m. Mass Hope is the force that drives the hearts of those who depart, leaving home, their homeland, at times their relatives and families I am thinking of the migrants in search of a better life which is worthier of them and their loved ones. And it is also the impulse in the heart of those who welcome: the desire to encounter, to get to know each other, to dialogue Hope is the force that drives us to share the journey, because the journey is made jointly Christ himself asks us to welcome our brother and sister migrants and refugees with open arms, with arms wide open. - Pope Francis, September 27, 2017 Green Tip for the Week! RE-IMAGINE TRASH Part 2 THINK OF THE TRASH AS YOUR LAST RESORT: Many items that are thrown away can be recycled or reused in some way. Before you throw something away, you can do an internet search to see if it can be recycled, reused, or up-cycled in some way. SWALCO.org is a great resource. A great place to donate gently-used items is the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. Or, you could ask a friend if they could use it! getstarted/ 3

We meet from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Formation Center (112 N. Milwaukee, Libertyville 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. All are welcome, and the session is free we look forward to seeing you there! Anyone with a job to fill or an interest in assisting job-seekers is also invited to attend. Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Ethan s Eagle Scout project involved mulching and cleaning up the grounds at Save-A-Pet in Grayslake, including building a picnic table and benches and repairing another picnic table for the outdoor space used by the numerous volunteers and staff. Religious Education Updates: Earlier this month, we celebrated the Feast of All Saints on November 1, remembering all men, women and children who, as St. Paul wrote have fought the good fight. They built and grew in their relationships with Christ and took on their role in the mission of his Church. If you are a sports fan, you might even call saints our spiritual coaches, because they have trained and practiced, failed and got back on their feet again, ready to try harder to be Jesus disciple and follow their mission in his Church. Whether you are an adult or child, there is a spiritual coach in our faith history who has a story that you can connect with, and will inspire you to continue to keep trying in your faith lives and become the saints God wants us to be. Tip for the week: Moms and dads, get together with your children and ask each other a challenging question: Am I training for sainthood? What are you doing to be a better disciple for Jesus? Which saint can I learn about and pray to, to help me be the person God created me to be?

9 Faith Formation Editor s Note: St. Joseph s Vocations Team continues to pray for religious vocations and help engage people to learn about God s calling in their own lives and others. As part of their service, the team has collected stories from parishioners whose relatives and friends have followed God s call to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life, and will share one once a month in the Carpenter. God called, She Responded: Sister Meg Kymes Our daughter, Meg, decided to enter the religious life when she was 23. Following her college graduation, she volunteered with the Vincentian Service Corps, where she worked with men being released from prison. During this year, she worked with many religious, who inspired her with their dedication and joy. We had always encouraged our children to be active in their faith both by our word and example. But when she told us she wanted to enter the religious life we were a bit surprised of her decision as well. However, many others in our community were shocked. Did she really know what she was doing? Would we allow her to do this? What about all she was giving up? But our answer was always the same, When God calls her, who are we to not approve? During Meg s eight years of study, work and discernment with the Daughters of Charity, she has lived in four different communities and through much prayer and reflection has come to more fully know and accept herself. She became more confident in her career decision and enthusiastically participates at career fairs and discernment retreats for other young men and women. She tells them of the joy she finds in her ministry and the support and love she receives from her community. She encourages them to listen to God and pray for guidance just as she did. Like any parent, we want our children to be happy with their life and find fulfillment in their career. Meg will never be in the same place or job for too long because as a Daughter [of Charity], she will always be changing, but her career of joyfully serving God s poor will never change. - Parishioners Martha & Steve Kymes The Vocations Ministry offers prayers for vocations with exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in St. Joseph Church. Please join us in praying that all people throughout the world will discern and accept the mission that God has planned for them. All Men and Women of the Parish are invited to MORNING MASS &BREAKFAST Annual Fall Thanksgiving Mass & Breakfast RSVP to: wcstjoseph@ gmail.com and provide your name and the number attending, or call Sponsored by the Women s and Men s Councils of St. Joseph Parish. 11 Prayer & Worship Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side The St. Joseph Bereavement Ministry joined families and friends of the faithful departed at our annual evening All Souls Mass on November 2 at 7:00 p.m. This Mass was presided by Fr. John Trout and concelebrated by Fr. Joseph Le and Fr. Martin Luboyera, assisted by Deacon Dennis Mudd. This Mass included a special candle blessing ceremony and was followed by refreshments and fellowship in the Narthex. As the candles were placed at the base of the altar, Fr. Trout reminded us that each candle represented our loved ones who are also gathered with us at the Mass around the table at the Divine feast. While we grieve our loss, we know in our hearts our loved ones are embraced in God s loving arms. Our parish family honors the memories of all loved ones and keeps them and their families in our prayers. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 25:14-30 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord Jesus told his disciples this parable: A man going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them. To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one to each according to his ability. Then he went away. After a long time the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. The one who had received five talents came forward bringing the additional five. He said, Master, you gave me five talents. See, I have made five more. His master said to him, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master s joy. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection In next week s Gospel Jesus concludes the teaching phase of His public ministry with one last parable. Jesus wants His disciples to realize that while it is important for us to seek to know the Father more intimately and to be protective of our faith, it is not enough for us to sit in our holiness and await the day of Christ s return. Whether we look upon the talents of the parable as the gift of our faith or as our individual talents, skills and charisms, the lesson of this parable is that we are expected to do something to build up the Kingdom of God on this earth. The parable clearly articulates the responsibility we have to make our faith an active and evangelical one. As Paul teaches in the Second Reading (1 Thessalonians 5: 1-6) we are called not only to bring ourselves out of darkness but also to enlighten the world around us. On the last day it will not be enough for us to say, I have been a good and faithful Catholic. Perhaps God might respond, Yes you were, but how did you make My love more present to those I allowed you to share life with? Who did you pray for? Who did you care for? How did you teach about how much I love you and each person one earth? We are called to grow in holiness not just for the sake of holiness itself but in imitation of Christ who was sent here to bring all of us back to the Father. For additional reflection on being judged at our death, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs ; on heaven, hell and purgatory, paragraphs and on the final judgment, paragraphs Reflection Questions 1. How have I grown in my relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit this past year? How have I grown stronger in my appreciation for God s generosity? 2. If I were to be my own judge on how well I have lived out my faith for the good of the Kingdom, what grade would I give myself? (Find Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy at in the Faith and Beliefs section) Have I worked through my own doubts and tried to assist others in dealing with theirs? Have I sought to obtain and share greater wisdom of my faith? Have I dealt with the plank in my own eye and loved others despite the splinter they might have in theirs? Have I been patient and forgiving? How often do I pray for the living and the dead? 3. How well have I done at feeding the hungry? Giving drink to the thirsty? Sheltering the homeless? Visiting the sick and prisoners? Burying the dead? Giving alms to the poor? Readings for the Week Monday: Wis 1:1-7; Ps 139:1b-10; Lk 17:1-6 St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Tuesday: Wis 2:23 3:9; Ps 34:2-3, 16-19; Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday: Wis 6:1-11; Ps 82:3-4, 6-7; Lk 17:11-19 St. Albert the Great Thursday: Wis 7:22b 8:1; Ps 119:89-91, 130, 135, 175; Lk 17:20-25 St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude Friday: Wis 13:1-9; Ps 19:2-5ab; Lk 17:26-37 St. Elizabeth of Hungary Saturday: Wis 18:14-16; 19:6-9; Ps 105:2-3, 36-37, 42-43; Lk 18:1-8 The Dedication of the Basilicas of Ss.
