2 Who Will Fill These Shoes? The following message from Archbishop Cupich is being played at all the Masses this weekend. Dear friends in Christ, I want to share some important information with you about vocations. Recently, we observed National Vocational Awareness Week. We all have a stake in vocations. We need the witness, service, and prayers of religious men and women, who are celebrating this year the Year of Consecrated Life. We also need deacons dedicated to service in the Church and the world. And, of course, we all of us need priests who will bring us God s Word, celebrate the sacraments, and offer a shepherd s care to God s Church. How will these priests come to us? They come from among us our sons and brothers and friends. God calls them, and we can and ought to echo that call. I want to make you aware of a very special event to foster vocations to the priesthood that has successfully helped young men explore the possibility of serving the Church as a priest. The program is Who Will Fill These Shoes? It is open to men ages 16 to 35. It takes place at Mundelein Seminary the day after Thanksgiving. Details for registration are available at www. Chicagopriest.com. In the course of this one day, participants in Who Will Fill These Shoes? come to a deeper appreciation of the one priesthood of Jesus Christ proclaimed in last week s second reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. They will come to understand how ordained priests serve the priesthood of all the baptized in the Church. They will explore the possibility of making a full and generous commitment, as did the widow in last week s gospel giving all she had. And so, I want to invite the young men aged 16 to 35 who belong to our communities of faith to come to Mundelein the day after Thanksgiving. I also want all our parishioners to encourage and invite young men they think could answer God s call to serve the Church and world as a priest. May we all take up our responsibility for vocations and echo the call that God extends in the Church. - Archbishop Blase J. We are offering Lightworks this Advent to introduce the Spiritual Exercises. 3 Catholic Campaign for Human Development Next Week What is poverty? Across the globe, it has many faces: hunger, disease, homelessness, and a lack of educational opportunities. We often associate these realities with images of starving children in Africa and Asia, but did you know that over 650,000 of your fellow Chicagoans are living in poverty right now? Many of them are struggling to meet their basic needs and provide for themselves and their families on less than $2,000 a month. This devastating reality fuels the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), which works to address the root causes of poverty and empower the poor. CCHD is even making a difference in your neighborhood, helping to fund Most Blessed Trinity Parish as they work toward immigration reform by developing leaders through pathways for citizenship, computer literacy, and Spanish language literacy. This November 21 and 22, join thousands of generous Chicago area Catholics who support the Catholic Campaign for Human Development as it funds organizations doing remarkable work to fight poverty and promote community development in our neighborhoods. The recipients of these beds include children entering foster care, families struggling to set up housing while transitioning from homelessness, 18 year olds coming out of foster care into independent living, or families starting over after a tragedy such as a house fire. A St. Joseph parishioner who is a CASA volunteer learned that one of the foster children he advocates for has been sleeping on the floor for the past month. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel John 18: 33b-37 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Response: Glory to You, O Lord Pilate said to Jesus, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered, Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me? Pilate answered, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants Reflection Next week brings the end of another Church year. How appropriate to end it with the celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe! In the gospel we find the dramatic account of the Jewish people s rejection of Jesus because He was not the kind of king they wanted. He was not the grand and powerful ruler who would conquer all of their earthly foes. Instead, Jesus explained, Mine is not a kingdom of this world. As Christians, we believe in and celebrate Jesus as a loving and humble servant-king who has invited us to live in God s kingdom where we can eat without money and drink without price. We believe in and celebrate Christ the King who has the power to heal our hurt and pain with His unconditional love. We believe in and celebrate Christ the King who leads us to live a life of peace and joy on this Earth and reward us with eternal life if we choose to submit ourselves to Him. Do we? The Jews sought a worldly king, but the world only can offer challenge and struggle. Jesus came as the King of both heaven and earth, promising life in abundance. Every day of our life we are called to celebrate life in Christ the King. For further reflection on Christ s Second Coming, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs and on the Coming of the Kingdom, paragraphs Reflection Questions 1. God sent us Jesus as our King to teach us what the Kingdom of God s love offers us and how to live out our desire for that Kingdom. How do I experience God s love in my life? Do I believe that Jesus can heal all of my wounds? How well do I show my gratitude for God s love for me? 2. As Catholic Christians we believe that the Sacraments provide us with the graces of love and mercy to heal us and strengthen us. Do I see myself as the beloved child of God that I became at my Baptism? What strength do I find in Holy Communion? How do I experience the grace of mercy in Reconciliation? Is the wisdom and strength of my Confirmation still guiding my life? How do I live the graces of Matrimony? Do I see our priests as the blessed and anointed servants of the Lord that they are? Have I prayed for the grace of healing for all receiving the Sacrament of the Sick? 3. Our mission is to make disciples of all nations. What can I do to better know Jesus and prepare myself to share the Good News of the Kingdom with those I encounter in my home, my parish and my community? Readings for the Week would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here. So Pilate said to him, Then you are a king? Jesus answered, You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
