7 Faith Formation Prayers for Vocations to the Priesthood treasure that God places in the hearts of some men, chosen by Him and called to follow Him in this special state of life. This treasure, that must be discovered and brought to light, is not made to enrich someone alone. He who is called to the ministry is not the master of his vocation, but rather the administrator of a gift that God has entrusted to him for the good of all the In support of the Archdiocesan request that parishes provide a Holy Hour to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and the Spiritual Formation Committee have scheduled Holy Hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays were chosen because it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. Please consider joining us as we pray for those who have been called. If you are unable to participate on Thursdays, we would like to provide an alternative for this prayer time by asking you to pray a short decade (ten Hail Mary s) of the rosary along with the prayer given each week for an increase in priestly vocations. This week s decade of the rosary: 2nd Joyful Mystery: The Visitation Mary wastes no time in acting upon the grace of her vocation. Through her cooperation, the plan of salvation is already unfolding. Let us offer this decade for those who have been called but are hesitating. May God s grace hurry them forward to answer the call and thus begin to labor for the harvest. During the summer months, although not gathering in church, we invite you to join many other parishioners each Friday at noon. Set your alarm or phone or take a break in your routine at home, pause where you are, and pray intentionally for peace in our homes, our cities, our state, our country and our world. Now visualize our village and our nation united in prayer for peace as we pray. (Galatians 6: 9-10a) Let us not become weary in doing good, for in due time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all. As Thomas Merton said: For each one of us there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny according to God s will, to be what God wants us to be. As we reflect on the scripture, let us listen to hear who God wants us to be and what path we are called to take to help bring about peace. We pray: Loving God, many in our world feel empty, lost, and seek direction in their lives; open their eyes, hearts, ears. Give them courage, strength, wisdom that they be drawn toward people and places that will help them grow positively and not be radicalized. Merciful God, hear our prayer. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 14: Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walk- and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became fright- Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection Can you imagine the utter amazement Jesus disciples must have felt when they saw Him walking toward them on the stormy feeding of the 5,000 (which had occurred just the day before), seeing someone walk on water still had to be amazing. Jesus not only had the power to perform miraculous cures but He had the ability to defy the laws of physics. Jesus invitation to Peter to step out of the boat and walk toward Him reminds us that if we step out of our comfort zone with complete faith in God s power, we can change the world around us. Unfortunately, this historical account also reminds us of the fate that befalls us when we allow doubt to creep into our faith in Christ. So often, doubt is quickly accompanied by fear which can lead to doubt and distress, asking Him to save us and lift us up. Jesus only asks that we believe in His ability to provide for our safety and well-being. He invites us to take His hand each time we receive Him in the Holy Eucharist and promises us that He will safely guide us to the shores of eternity. What we are called to believe is that not only will the journey with Christ be safe and secure but that it ultimately will be fulfilling and joyful as well. For further reflection on Trusting in God, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church Reflection Questions 1. God invites us to walk toward Him through the turbulent seas of our daily lives in a world that is often hostile to Christian - Readings for the Week St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)
