2 A Bright Future Under Our Roof ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ROOF & LIGHTING FUND Thank you for generously donating to the maintenance of our church We are grateful for your generous donations to our church Roof & Lighting Fund. Contributions in our blue envelopes are specifically designated for a new church roof and improvements to our church lighting. Funds received in the blue envelopes this fiscal year total $47,172 toward a goal of $400,000. Roof leak at rear church entrance The first phase of the lighting project, replacing 49 existing fixtures with LED lighting and adding 48 new LED fixtures to the worship space, has already been fully funded with private donations. LED fixtures have already been installed in the sanctuary, the worship space and the children s room. Nearly half of the light fixtures have been installed as of April 22. As work continues with this phase, you will notice the worship space gradually becoming brighter. We will have a second collection on the first weekend of each month until we have reached our goal. The next blue envelope collection will be May 5-6. All donations received will be used specifically for these projects. We are asking you to bring your blue envelopes and place them in the basket at the second collection. Blue envelopes are also available at the church entrances. Electronic donations can be made on-line at Thank you for supporting the Roof & Lighting Fund. Catholic Charities Collection on Mother s Day As a senior citizen, Antonia does not have much income left after paying for rent, medications, and daily supplies. She relies on the Catholic Charities Senior Food Nutrition Program for all of her meals. Last year 145,547 food packages were delivered to low-income seniors in Cook and Lake counties. Without the food they receive from us, they would have to choose between a healthy diet and paying for medication and other necessities. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother s Day to help seniors stay healthy. Learn more at True power is service. We must serve all people especially the poor, the weak and the vulnerable. Pope Francis Dear St. Joseph Parish Community, Today marks my last weekend at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Although I will come back to offer two Masses of Thanksgiving the weekend of June 16-17, I am already experiencing the loss that is normal when you bid goodbye to a place that has meant so much to you. This year seemed to go by the fastest of any of my eight years in the seminary and that is partially due to your presence in my life. I know that my first few years here were more behind-the-scenes and so many of you may not have gotten to know me that well. But this year I gained so much from being a deacon and preaching at Mass and going to other parish events. I cannot thank you all enough for what I have learned about the parish and myself. I have to admit one of my greatest fears of becoming a priest was preaching and being at the center of everything. St. Joseph s gave me the opportunity to preach almost every weekend I was here, which was good practice. It also gave me a sense of confidence that I did not have before, and for that I will be forever grateful to this community. I also want to thank Fr. Trout for his priestly witness to me as well as all the staff and volunteers who have made this such a great experience. I can only hope to be blessed with a parish such as this back in my home Diocese of Grand Rapids. Finally, my ordination is on June 2 at the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Grand Rapids at 10:00 a.m. (EST). This is open to the public, so if anyone wants to make the trip, you are more than welcome. You can also stream this event online at on that day. Most importantly, I would ask you to keep me in your prayers as I make this transition to serving as a priest, that I will remain close to God throughout this journey Christ has placed me on. Thank you again! And know of my love and prayers for this community. May God Bless you, Deacon Mike Steffes 2

16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel John 15:9-17 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Jesus said to his disciples: As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no Response: Glory to You, O Lord longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection In this Sunday s Gospel, we are urged to remain attached to Christ so that we might bear great fruit. Next Sunday, we are reminded that the great fruit we are to bear is love. Attaching ourselves to Christ should inspire and empower us to Love one another as I love you. In this one statement, Jesus provides us with both our mission in life and the formula for experiencing true joy. While Jesus command is clear, it can seem daunting, especially when we take into account how He loved us to His death. He goes on to remind us, No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friend. Fortunately for us, we don t have to experience martyrdom in order to love as Christ loves. Then what does laying down one s life for a friend mean? Like many things Jesus asks of us, it doesn t need to be anything grand. It may be as simple as giving up a Saturday golf game to spend time with a spouse who is struggling. Perhaps it is turning off the TV to spend a little time with our children before bed. It may be shoveling the snow from an elderly neighbor s side walk or preparing a meal for a friend. Jesus asks only that we strive to become less self-seeking, to live our lives with a greater awareness of others, loving them as He would if He were standing in our place. Laying down our life in this day and age can start with something as simple as putting down our cell phones or tablets and enjoying the company of those we are with. We come to know pure love when we attach ourselves to Christ. When we know pure love we can t help but share that great gift. For further reflection, take some time to draw up a list of those in your life who are in need of more love and support. Consider those at home, at work, in the neighborhood and in our community. Next, write down how you might lay down your life and love those as Christ has loved you. Also see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs for reflection on charity and the commandment to love. Reflection Questions 1. How loved by God do I feel? What can I do to get in closer touch with the love God has for me? Consider all the ways God continues to show His love. 2. As Catholics, we believe that the Sacraments provide us with the strengthening graces we need to love as Christ has loved us. Which sacramental graces do I most need to seek in order to increase my ability to love? Eucharistic? Penitential? Matrimonial? Healing? 3. What one thing will I do this week to share Christ s love with others? Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 14:5-18; Ps 115:1-4, 15-16; Jn 14:21-26 St. Pius V Tuesday: Acts 14:19-28; Ps 145:10-13ab, 21; Jn 14:27-31a St. Joseph the Worker Wednesday: Acts 15:1-6; Ps 122:1-5; Jn 15:1-8 St. Athanasius Thursday: 1 Cor 15:1-8; Ps 19:2-5; Jn 14:6-14 Ss. Philip and James Friday: Acts 15:22-31; Ps 57:8-10, 12; Jn 15:12-17 Saturday: Acts 16:1-10; Ps 100:1b-3, 5; Jn 15:18-21 Sunday: Acts 10:25-36, 34-35, 44-48; Ps 98:1-4; 1 Jn 4:7-10; Jn 15:
