2 I will be leaving for my annual silent retreat, based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, on Wednesday, October 18 and will return on Wednesday, 10/25. The retreat will be at Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House in Sedalia, Colorado. Please keep me in your prayers during this special time of prayer and reflection. Be assured of my daily prayers for you and your loved ones as I devote one hour of prayer each evening before the Blessed Sacrament for your intentions. 2

3 as of September 19, 2017 Our faith is lived in schools and parishes, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches, where people of all backgrounds in every neighborhood of the Archdiocese of Chicago are served. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars and famines, without regard for religious affiliation. 90 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the critical work of the schools, parishes, agencies and ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago. 4 Social Justice & Service Green Tip for TODAY! Check out this environmental event for the whole family today at the Field Museum! The Field Museum will host the second annual Green Team Summit on Sunday, October 15. This is a multi-faith event for connecting and networking about environmental issues such as climate change, climate justice, youth workshop, and eating local. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come for all or part. This is a free, family-friendly event. To learn more and to register, please see com/2017greenteamsummit MISSION CONTROL One week and counting! Next weekend, October 21-22, we will celebrate St. Joseph s Mission Sunday. St. Joseph Catholic Church will recognize our Social Justice and Service Ministries and the many parishioners who bring them to life. Are you among them? Thank you! Our First Reading this weekend is from the Prophet Isaiah (25:6-10a). On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain, he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from every face This is a beautiful vision that should comfort us amid the squabbling, the violence and the natural disasters that confront us. And, more than that, it should inspire us to ask how we might be Christ s eyes, ears, voice and hands to fulfill that vision on earth. Our Baptism calls us to be all that. St. Joseph s ministries provide diverse, interlocking paths to do all that, while building and enriching our relationships with Christ and with each other. If you are new to the Parish, if you have simply not been in a position to join in ministry before, please use next weekend to explore the world we are creating, the world that needs you. The smallest contribution of your time unlocks the grace of your Baptism and reveals special ways that your talent and those of your family can be joined with others to make a difference, within our community of faith and in the world! Aid for Women Aid for Women of Northern Lake County is a 32-year-old all-volunteer center (4606 W. Old Grand Avenue, next door to the Gurnee Fire Station) with a mission to educate and encourage women and men with good decision-making information and resources with regard to life choices. The mission statement is: To give hope to women who are pregnant, explain the risks involved in abortion, and offer life-affirming alternatives such as parenting and adoption. Each client is treated with respect and dignity and confidentiality. Appropriate referrals are made to afford the best prenatal care for herself and her child. Free pregnancy testing and doctor referrals for prenatal care are available by appointment. All clients are offered information about adoption and there are no fees for services. If the client is single, she is presented with the opportunity to change her lifestyle and begin a life of chastity until marriage. A maternity clothes lending closet, literature and books on pregnancy and natural family planning are free as well. A medical set of fetal models shows the client how pregnancy progresses. Help is available in our Gurnee office or over the phone at , and our community outreach volunteers welcome opportunities to speak to groups and classes. Spanish-speaking assistance is also available. Donations of baby care products and equipment are always appreciated. Referrals are also made for post-abortion healing and retreats. Visit: Word of Life We must listen to God, who speaks to us. Having a well-formed conscience doesn t mean we have all the answers to the complex problems in the world, but it does mean that we are sensitive to the needs and struggles of other people. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, Understanding Conscience A Fudgeraiser is being held to benefit Aid for Women of Northern Lake County pregnancy resource center. Half-pound packages of Chocolate, Chocolate Walnut, Maple Walnut and Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge are available through Carol Walsh at $10 each Fudge is made in Monroe, Wisconsin. Aid for Women has been helping families in Lake County since 1983 with baby and maternity needs. Since January we have had over 1,550 appointments, with almost 200 new clients. We give out maternity clothing, vitamins, baby clothes up to size 2T, emergency diapers and formula and baby gear. 4

Sunday, October 29: Saints Showcase. Grade 8 students attend the 5:00 p.m. Mass and display their Saints Posters. Wednesday, November 1, 2017 Feast of All Saints Holy Day of Obligation Religious Education Updates: Many of our younger students kicked off the first couple weeks of sessions learning about creation. Their eyes were opened to our belief that our all-knowing, all-powerful God, created EVERYTHING, and the greatest of all creations is 8 us, human beings. God knows and loves us, and we can know and love God, and all that God created. How often though, do we take time to marvel at the world around us, at the beauty of nature, especially as the season is changing from summer to autumn? As God s creation evolves before our eyes, do we take the time to praise God for the work of his hands? Tip for the Week: This week with your family, don t walk blindly through your days. Take a moment and look at the beauty of nature. Take a walk with your family and thank God for the warmth of the sun, the colors in the evening sky and the changing foliage on the trees.

Psalm 85: 9 I will listen for the word of God; surely the Lord will proclaim peace to his people, to the faithful, to those who trust in him. We have experienced the power and force of nature. We have witnessed tragedy. This is the news. We hear it. We see it. Some live it. We must not let the violence or tragedy distract us from seeing and sharing all the good that is not reported, sharing the Good News, God s Word. We are called to be Christ to one another through our actions, our lives. Sometimes, use words. We pray: Lord, we place our trust in you. Heal our world. Strengthen and guide us to listen to you, to seek and act on your truth so that our hearts, our world know the peace that is found in you alone. Loving God, empower each of us and those in positions of authority to meet conflict with grace and a willingness to listen. We pray, merciful God, hear our prayer. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 22:15-21 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone s opinion, for you do not regard a person s status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Knowing their malice, Jesus said, Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax. Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, Whose image is this and whose inscription? They replied, Caesar s. At that he said to them, Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection As we read the gospel for next Sunday it is helpful to reflect on the difference between loyalty and responsibility. The Jewish people of Jesus time lived under Roman rule, which they were responsible to obey. There were many, including the Pharisees, who believed that it was improper to pay taxes to Caesar as well as those who, like the Herodians, had made their peace with the Empire. We see Jesus successfully avoid the trap they laid for Him by reminding all that their duty is to be loyal to God and to give Him what is His. At the same time, He teaches us to submit to civil authorities in order to promote the interests of a just society. If we hear only a civics lesson in this Gospel we may miss the opportunity to reflect upon what it really means to give unto God what belongs to God. As we contemplate what it means to be a baptized child of God it should become clear that our entire life belongs to Him. He has given us the gift of life and He desires our eventual return to Him. Yet, we are human beings living in a world whose secular values are constantly bombarding us. We all struggle to hold our spiritual heads above water when we become overwhelmed with the day-to-day demands of a myriad of obligations. It can be tempting to put God s desires for our lives aside for a time and get back to Him when we think we have our world under control. Yes, of course, we all have worldly responsibilities but our allegiance and loyalty must be first and foremost to God. When the world tempts us to follow its ways we must remember the Gospel parable and that we must obey God rather than man. (Acts 5:29) Turning to Him is the answer. Whenever we do we will be rewarded with peace. When we follow the ways of man we turn away from God and are likely to encounter doubt, fear and anxiety. Reflection Questions 1. How do I exhibit my allegiance to God? What might I do to strengthen the bond between us? In what areas do I give myself over to worldly responsibilities? Where might I need to adjust my priorities? 2. Am I a good and loyal Catholic soldier? What might I do to live a life more loyal to the teachings of Christ in and through His Church? 3. One of the ways for us to demonstrate our loyalty to God is to make sure that His generous love is shared with all. How can I make sure that I am making God s love more available to those I encounter day in and day out? For further reflection on the role of a Catholic citizen see the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs Readings for the Week Monday: Rom 1:1-7; Ps 98:1-4; Lk 11:29-32 St. Hedwig; St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Tuesday: Rom 1:16-25; Ps 19:2-5; Lk 11:37-41 St. Ignatius of Antioch Wednesday: 2 Tm 4:10-17b; Ps 145:10-13, 17-18; Lk 10:1-9 St. Luke Friday: Rom 4:1-8; Ps 32:1b-2, 5, 11; Lk 12:1-7 St. Paul of the Cross Saturday: Rom 4:13, 16-18; Ps 105:6-9, 42-43; Lk 12:8-12 Sunday: Is 45:1, 4-6; Ps 96:1, 3-5, 7-10; 1 Thes 1:1-5b; 16 Mt 22:15-21
