11 Social Justice & Service MISSION CONTROL Two weeks and counting! In two weeks, October 21-22, we will celebrate St. Joseph s Mission Sunday. It will be an occasion to recognize our Social Justice and Service Ministries and the many parishioners who bring them to life to the life of those they serve. Social Justice and Service are intrinsic elements of our Christian faith. In the sacrament of Baptism, we are baptized with water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We are immediately anointed with chrism on the crown of our foreheads. The minister prays, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as members of his body, sharing everlasting life. The good king and queen commit to the service and welfare of the people in their care, especially the poor and neglected, the marginalized and persecuted, the ill and disabled. St. Joseph s Mission Sunday will be an occasion to live out our Baptism and explore new opportunities to contribute our time and talent to our family of faith. This perfectly dovetails with St. Joseph Catholic Church s new initiative, Community for the Kingdom. Its intent is to strengthen our relationship with Christ and each other and build compassionate communities that make the Kingdom of God present in our daily lives. Ministry is the lifeblood that can flow from our relationships with each other to those in need, making the Kingdom of God present in their lives. Over the next two weeks, consider the possibility How might I as an individual, how might my family, how might the small communities we create join in Help Others with Taxes AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is looking for compassionate, friendly people to join our team of local volunteers for the upcoming tax season. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 22: 1-14 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, of the people in parables, saying, The kingdom of heaven therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his you find. The servants went out into the streets and son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time was filled with guests. he sent other servants, saying, Tell those invited: Behold, I But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said nored to him, My friend, how is it that you came in here without a the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated king said to his attendants, Bind his hands and feet, and cast them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. and grinding of teeth. Many are invited, but few are chosen. Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready, but The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection For the past several weeks Jesus has been trying to help the Pharisees (and us) understand two significant points: the week s gospel, Jesus tries to teach this message again, this time using His favorite image, the wedding feast. In Jesus time, a mate in joyful celebrations. To understand the parable, it might be helpful to know that the host also provided each guest a garment that they were supposed to wear to the banquet. So while a modern audience might feel badly for the poor guest who was thrown out, the parable is meant to convey that the guest was only willing to accept the invitation on his terms and not on the generous terms of the host. Also, the invitation to wedding guests did not usually provide the exact time when the celebrations would begin, so perhaps the guest had not cared for the garment or it could not be located when it was time for the banquet to begin. Understanding the circumstances of wedding celebrations during Jesus time helps us understand the point that is being made with this parable. to the feast with the appropriate joy and gratitude. For additional reflection on the Kingdom of God, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs Reflection Questions 1. How can knowing that God has invited each of us to join in the heavenly banquet and provided us with all we need to 2. The celebration of the Eucharist parallels the wedding feast in the Gospel parable. What might God want us to understand Readings for the Week 16
