3 GIVE GIVE Hope GIVE Comfort Peace Joy! GIVE GIVE HOPE To live as a member of the Body of Christ means to have a willingness to embrace the grace offered us. This first week of Advent, consider being a source of Christ s hope to others. How can you turn your holiday activities and festivities into opportunities to embrace the Hope of the World our Lord, Jesus Christ? As you notice all the stars in the night sky and adorning the many store displays, and those on your own decorations, think about the hope of a young mother about to give birth to her first child, the hope of the shepherds for the safety of their flocks, the hope of the Magi longing to discover the monumental event that they were in search of. Take time to notice all the haloes surrounding the variety of Christmas lights that break through the darkness of mere commercialism. Think of them as the prayers of the countless of sick, sorrowing, tired, hungry and needy calling out to God in the darkness of their lives. Will you give hope to all who pass your way? Will you graciously accept the good will of others who desire to be a source of hope for you? We invite and encourage each of you to gather with other members of the parish EVERY FRIDAY AT NOON IN THE CHURCH TO PRAY FOR PEACE IN OUR COUNTRY, OUR WORLD. Cannot be in church? Join us in spirit and pray with us, simple prayers from your heart for peace. Faith Formation For all men who seek to hold Christmas well! The Men s Council of St. Joseph Parish in Libertyville invites you to join us this Advent for the 4 th edition of Saturday Morning Live, facilitated by Dr. Kevin Murphy. Get your heart back in shape for the Season of Christmas! Make this season more where it really counts! Men of all spirits and dispositions are welcome; whether you be a Grinch or a George Bailey. Take some time out on Saturday mornings! Working the heart of the matter! Join us at SML for Advent. Refresh, re-imagine, and engage with tidings of comfort and joy. December 3--The Soul and the Season December 10--Strange Stories, Spiritual Sight, and Blurred Guides December 17--The Magi Ride Again* (borrowed with permission from John Shea) Where: St. Joseph Parish, Koenig Center Doors open at 6:30 a.m. We have a hard start at 7:00 a.m. We finish by 8:25 a.m. Hot coffee, donuts and fellowship, all for a one-time fee of $20. To pre-register, go to the Saint Joseph website or phone Walk-ins welcome. We hope to see you! 3 Advent Scripture Series with Fr. John Kartje Begins Tuesday During Advent, we reflect on the amazing truth that God became human. But why did the Incarnation have to be? And why did it happen when and in the way that it happened? The answers to these questions lie at the spiritual heart of the extraordinary, little-known biblical book, Letter to the Hebrews. Join Fr. Kartje as we explore the depth and meaning of the early Church s understanding of the priesthood of Jesus and how that priesthood calls us to a more authentic way of life today. The Letter to the Hebrews serves as the perfect spiritual guide to lead us through the Advent season and more deeply into the miracle that is Christmas. All are welcome to join us for the three evenings of scripture and prayer on Tuesdays, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. November 29 in the Koenig Center, December 6 in the Church, December 13 in the Koenig Center. Fr. Kartje is Rector and President of Mundelein Seminary/University of St. Mary of the Lake. He earned a doctorate in Biblical Studies from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Fr. Kartje is a highly respected preacher and teacher. Register today on the parish website: For questions or for more information, contact Jon Monroe at monroej@actualtech.com.

5 Faith Formation Thank You to Local Author! The Religious Education Office and families would like to give special thanks to Geralyn Sullivan. Geralyn generously donated 600 copies of her first publication as a children s book author, An Advent Poem. Every family received this beautifully illustrated book as a gift to read and experience during the upcoming Advent and Christmas seasons. Geralyn is a devout Catholic and an aunt of 30 nieces and nephews and one grandnephew. She is a financial advisor at William Blair and Company in Chicago and is a longtime parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka. Contact the Religious Education office, , for information on how to get a copy of her book. Religious Education November 27/29 NO Traditional Religious Education sessions. Home Groups please check with your catechist. December 4/6 Traditional Religious Education sessions will resume. December 9/11 Faith Weaving Religious Education sessions. December 11/13 Traditional Religious Education sessions. Prayer & Worship The Memory of Loved Ones to Create our Gift Garden Central to the Christmas Season is the giving and receiving of gifts. Gifts speak to the love that we have for one another. We are gift to others. Others are or have been gift to us. This Christmas Season, as a way to remember those who have been gift to us, you are invited to contribute towards the flowers that will grace our worship space during the Christmas Season. This might be in memory of a deceased loved one, someone who encouraged you in faith, or a friend or relative who gifted you with their guidance or their encouragement. Through these memorials the Christmas flowers will not just be decoration but a true garden of gifts representing those who have blessed our lives. Envelopes for this can be found on the tables in the back of church and are in your envelope packets. Simply fill one out with your contribution and drop it in the collection basket or send it to the parish office. During the Christmas Season the names of those remembered in our Gift Garden will be published in the Carpenter. May the beauty of our worship space this Christmas Season truly reflect the beauty of those lives that have touched our hearts and blessed our lives! Within the gathered assembly, the role of the congregation is especially important. The full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else, for it is the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit. 7 Social Justice & Service A Christmas Gift for Huaro, Peru Over the last three years, St. Joseph parishioners have provided funding to the St. Joseph/ Jesuit partnership project in Huaro, Peru. Thanks to you, the children are being fed in the cafeteria, they are being tutored in the library, family counseling is available, and we see hope in their eyes and smiles on their faces. Your compassion, prayers and commitment to these children, and the Jesuits who care for them, has been life-changing. This holiday season The International Sharing Ministry continues its support for the children in Peru by giving them the gift of play. Because there are no parks in Huaro and the rainy season in Peru extends from October to Buy a Christmas Tree and Feed a Family during Christmas, Easter & Thanksgiving The Saint Joseph Knights of Columbus Council 3674 are selling Christmas Trees to raise money to feed those families in need during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Please visit us at the Marytown s east parking lot and buy your tree. (1600 W. Park Avenue, Libertyville, Illinois) We are open beginning Friday, November 25 through Saturday, December 17. We accept cash or checks only. Special Friday, November 25 hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekday hours are from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekend hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thanks, and hope to see you there! Christmas Gift Sale December 3-4 The Refugee Resettlement Ministry is hosting a sale of handmade goods after all of the Masses in the gym foyer on the weekend of December 3-4. There will be scarves, knitted goods, jewelry and other handmade items for sale. These items are made by refugee women as an additional source of income for their families. Why not stop by before or after Mass and pick up some truly unique gifts for those special people in your life? Cash or Check only. March, the children have great difficulty playing outside. With our help, the Jesuits are building a lighted, secure, concrete sports field that will allow the children the opportunity to socialize, exercise and just be kids even amidst the harsh realities of extreme poverty. Our St. Joseph sports field project will serve the entire Huaro community and will be an all-year-around safe place for the children to play soccer and other sports. Help us give the gift of play by picking up one of the Giving Tree Tags in the back of the church marked Jesuit International Ministry or make donations to St. Joseph Church with Peru Sports Field in the memo line. Word of Life A model of care has been developed specifically for families whose infant is likely to die before or after birth. Often called perinatal hospice, [it] provides precious moments together whether the baby is inside or outside the womb which can be cherished forever. 8 Social Justice & Service Green Tip of the Week IDEAS FOR GREEN GIFT GIVING Look for locallymade gifts at craft fairs and artisan shops. Not only are the gifts unique, but also they reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation. Choose gifts made from recycled materials. For some ideas see Give battery-free gifts. According to the EPA, about 40% of all battery sales occur during the holiday season. Discarded batteries are an environmental hazard. Even rechargeable batteries find their way into the waste stream eventually. Avoid toys that promote violence. Remember the theme of Christmas is Peace on Earth. There are many toys and games that are fun, and nurture children s creativity and sense of active play. Re-gifting is OK. Re-gifting makes perfect sense. If you receive something you really don t need, look for ways you can reuse this gift by passing it on to someone who can use it. Of course, re-gifting needs to be done with care so as not to offend the original giver, but keeping a gift you don t need is wasteful. Over 25 parishioners spent a few hours putting 2,700 tags together and stapling them onto ribbons. The tags with gift requests from families and agencies are available in the Church. Thank you for your generosity! St. Joseph Employment Ministry to Meet on December 7 Transitions, even positive ones, can be highly stressful, both to us as individuals who are most directly affected, as well as to our family and friends. Unemployment or underemployment are particularly difficult, since they touch so many aspects of our life, and they certainly affect those who are closest to us. If you are in the midst of job, career, or any other disruptive life change, you may find our next meeting very helpful. Dr. Kevin Murphy, an executive coach and professional trainer from our community, will present Managing Emotions and Relationships During Times of Change to help us better understand these challenges and to deal with them more effectively. We meet from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Formation Center (112 N. Milwaukee, Libertyville 60048), Room C. Please enter from the rear of the building. All are welcome! The St. Joseph Employment Ministry assists the unemployed and under-employed in the pursuit of personally and professionally fulfilling work. Anyone with a job to fill or an interest in assisting job-seekers is also invited to attend. Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. Learn more at Thoughts on Giving For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. (Matthew 24:42) People who have had health issues or near-death experiences generally have a greater appreciation for each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usually take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But when you start to look at each day as a gift, you realize all the little miracles that happen daily and grow in gratitude for all that we have been given. Beyond Hearing Aids: Sound Advice Class on December 1 Sound Advice Classes will be offered at no charge at St. Joseph s Formation Center on the first Thursday of every month. The next class is December 1 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Julie Kneip, Doctor of Audiology, of Hearing Associates, Inc., will be conducting the complimentary classes. It is a series of two classes. If you or a loved one has a hearing loss, these classes are not to be missed! When there s hearing loss in the family, all family members are encouraged to be involved in the implementation of a hearing loss strategy. The primary goal of the classes is to educate about hearing loss beyond the use of hearing aids. Previous attendees have experienced improved social relationships, decreased isolation, improved self-confidence, and increased understanding of communication strategies. Recommendations provided regarding public gatherings, structuring the home environment for maximum audibility, the rights of people with hearing impairments (as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act), and ways to preserve and protect your hearing. To register, please call Hearing Associates, Inc. at for a reservation. Space is limited. Enter Formation Center at back entrance. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. Reflection John the Baptist is one of the central figures of Advent. We have come to know him as the one who drew attention to Jesus and helped others recognize Him as the Savior. In his time, many acknowledged John as a prophet. Some Jews even thought he might be the Messiah, as he went about preaching that the Kingdom of Heaven is close at hand. Fortunately, we have a great advantage over the Jews of John s day. We no longer need him to tell us that Jesus was the awaited Messiah. John s role in our day is to remind us to prepare ourselves to invite Jesus into our lives in a bigger way. During this preparation season John calls our first step to be that of repentance. We are called to identify those things which keep us from walking on a straight path toward God or even walking in the wrong direction. Our second step is to express our sorrow for our sinfulness. Yet true repentance calls us to do more than turn away from our sin and face God. It calls us to take positive steps toward Him. We amend our ways not merely by ceasing to sin but we must act more virtuously as well. As we prepare for Christmas we don t only clean our house, we decorate it lavishly as well. John the Baptist would encourage us to do the same for our souls during this Advent season. Confess our sins. Express our sorrow for them. Then become a more loving presence in our homes and our communities. For further reflection on John the Baptist s role, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs and, on interior repentance Reflection Questions 1. As we repent for the times we have turned away from God or have become distracted from Him, we are called to not only turn to Him but we are called to take steps in His direction. What steps can I take to move closer to God during this Advent season? 2. What new habits might I develop to help me to avoid lapsing back into those thoughts or actions which turn my heart away from God? 3. During Lent many of us resolve to make some sacrifice to prepare for the celebration of Easter. What specific resolution(s) to spread joy might I make during this Advent preparation season?
