Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a onetime special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. After our parish goal of $137,342 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. 3 Community Building Funeral Luncheon Ministry Volunteers Needed One of most giving ministries at St. Joseph Catholic Church is the Funeral Luncheon Ministry where meals are available to follow any funeral conducted at St. Joseph. During a very difficult time, families can count on this group to provide a wonderful meal for all friends and family who are celebrating the life of a friend or relative. The key to the success of this ministry are volunteers who give of their time. At this point, we are looking for additional help to keep this ministry vibrant. Our need is simple: luncheon. Sometimes there may be three luncheons in a month and sometimes there will be none in three months, so the time involved is not regularly scheduled but nor is it time-intensive. If you feel you could donate your time or baking talents to this wonderful ministry, please contact Paula Endress, pendress49@mac.com or Senior Corner ST. Next Sunday s Gospel Mark 1:29-39 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon s motherin-law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were looking for you. He told them, Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come. So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection Throughout Ordinary Time, we focus on who Jesus is and why the Father sent Him into our world. Yes, next Sunday s Gospel highlights Jesus as the healer of all the afflicted, but it is not only for the miracles Jesus performed in His day (and can perform in our lives) that the Father sent His only Son to earth. Jesus ability to heal is a powerful manifestation of God s universal love that makes all of those who believe and trust in Him whole. Jesus knows that when we approach God in earnest faith, we can be fully healed of the afflictions of our heart and soul as well as our body. But beyond restoration of health, Christ offers us more. He offers us an alternative to the struggles, fears and concerns we encounter in our daily lives. The First Reading from Job alludes to the earthly journey as drudgery and slavery, as a way of characterizing our human condition. We seek healing but perhaps more importantly we seek hope, hope for a better life, a life free from worry and concern. That is just the life that followers of Christ are promised. Healing can restore us but hope can transform us. We are called to imitate Christ by regularly taking ourselves in prayer to an encounter with God the Father, seeking to be made whole with His love. can become channels of both healing and hope to those around us. forming power of God s love highlighted in the Gospel. Reflect on the mission that Jesus has passed onto each of us as it is described by St. Paul in the Second Reading, 1 Corinthians: 9-16, For insight on the importance of prayer, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church Reflection Questions 1. How can my prayer become an encounter with the love of God which can lift me out of my preoccupation with worldly concerns? What do I most need from my loving God at this time? 2. How can I better know Jesus so that I might be more prepared, as a parent, neighbor or friend to bring His love and hope to my family, parish and community? my family, my parish or my community?
