2 At the 39th Academy Awards hosted by Bob Hope, A Man for All Seasons won the Oscar for Best Picture. I believe this would be an appropriate title for Fr. John Hennessey s priestly ministry as he celebrates his 50th Anniversary of Ordination, Fr. John Hennessey s ordination came just a few years after the writing of one of the most important Vatican II documents, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, known by its Latin title Lumen Gentium. In defining the church as the People of God, the writing provided a new direction for the church, shifting the focus from seeing the church as the domain of the hierarchy and clergy to greater emphasis on community and a recognition that all people are blessed with charisms that are a gift of the Holy Spirit and available to all the faithful of every rank. This new vision had to be initiated and sustained and our own Fr. John Hennessey played a crucial leadership role in the Archdiocese of Chicago during this important period. After his first appointment to St. Bernadette s in Evergreen Park, Fr. John began a stage in his life in which he was involved in the formation of those who would be part of promoting this new vision throughout the Archdiocese. His appointment to a teaching position at Quigley South, a preparatory high school for those interested in the priesthood, and to Niles College of Loyola University, the college seminary of the Archdiocese of Chicago, gave him a great opportunity to do so. After completing these assignments, he was appointed as Vocations Director for the Archdiocese. This was a very important and influential appointment because the people he recruited would eventually determine the future direction of the church. In 1986, Fr. Hennessey was appointed pastor to St. Isaac Jogues and subsequently to St. Joseph s Libertyville in 1997 where he served as our beloved pastor until his retirement in In both these appointments he sustained the new direction of the church as a community of faithful disciples, called the People of God. However as a true man for all seasons, his ministry and his sage influence persists. Four years prior to his retirement, Fr. John had the courage to initiate the Joe Study, a major evaluation of St. Joseph s to discern the best path forward for the parish and to grow engagement, which eventually led to the formation of the Parish Pastoral Plan. This process was inclusive and comprehensive and eventually led to a new vision and mission for the parish which called for a restructuring or evolution of every aspect of parish life. I find it quite interesting that this is something that the Archdiocese of Chicago is about to undertake in all of its parishes and institutions. For some, it is going to be a challenging process and will involve significant change, something that is never easy. However, one of the many great gifts that Fr. John has given this parish is that we are ahead of the curve when it comes to this program entitled Renew My Church. Finally, I would like to celebrate one of Fr. John s many qualities that I seek to emulate in my own ministry. It is his capacity to relate to people with kindness and compassion in a way that sincerely communicates that every person is valued and appreciated. This is reflected in his amazing ability to remember names. Someone put it beautifully and succinctly when they said, Fr. John is part of our family and we feel part of his. Please join me in congratulating Fr. John on 50 years of priestly ministry. We treasure his many contributions to St. Joseph s over the years. Thank you, Fr. John. 2

3 Happy Easter! Lent is over; Christ has conquered sin and death. Now we celebrate the 50 days of the Easter Season, from Easter Sunday to Pentecost, when we rejoice in the Risen Christ who came for our benefit to give us the hope of new life the hope of eternal life. It is with deep gratitude and a spirit of rejoicing that I want to thank the many people who assist in the planning and execution of our prayerful liturgical celebrations. Without the dedicated volunteers and staff we could not do what we do! So allow me to try to thank them. First, I would like to thank our Liturgy Planning Team consisting of Kris Partain, Anne DeFranco, Dennis Valentini, Eugene O Brien, Dan Harris, Jennifer Kolber, Jim Lobus, Judy Dioszegi, Mary Martino Gacs, Sandra Jimenez, John Scanlan, Susan Speth, and Ron Vanasdlen. It is their wisdom and guidance that makes all of this possible. I want to thank our proclaimers for the many hours of preparation so they proclaim God s Word in a manner that His word should be, with love and conviction. Their proclamation of the Word is the best! Thank you to our Altar Servers, both children and adults, who spent many hours of practice and study of the liturgy plans to ensure they know what they need to do. They do it well! Gratitude to our Music Ministry led by Ron Vanasdlen, the choirs, cantors, and musicians who by using their talents invite us into a more prayerful experience of worshiping God. Thanks to the Keepers of the Feast Team lead by Judy Dioszegi. This team includes Kris Partain, Carol Suvanich, Pat Smuck, Diane Vasquez, and Marcia Juracan. They spend countless hours working on our seasonal themes and church environment. Thank you to Carol Suvanich and the women who volunteer to do our floral arrangements. They do a magnificent job making our sanctuary a beautiful place for all of us to worship God. The Easter display is just beautiful. They are Continue your Easter journey by experiencing Ignatian Spirituality The Ignatian Spirituality Committee will be continuing a series of talks to help people interested in exploring the Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Our next talk with be Thursday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Loughry Room. Our speaker will be Paul Horcher, a spiritual director with extensive training and experience in the Exercises. Paul has studied spirituality at Catholic Theological Union, worked in men s spirituality, especially in finding God in nature. He has completed an extensive study of St. John Paul II s Theology of the Body with the Theology of the Body Institute in Pennsylvania, and completed a 3-year internship in Spiritual Direction at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington, Illinois. Paul will be speaking on Finding reconciliation through God s love. If you have an interest in this treasure of our church, please join us. If you have any questions, please contact Steve Kymes at smkymes@gmail.com. We hope you can join us! 3 artists! We are grateful to our many liturgical ministers, Sacristans, Liturgy Coordinators and Eucharistic Ministers for their dedication. Their focus on our Lord s work is second to none. Thank you to the Greeters and Ushers, who greet all of us and our visitors with big warm smiles. We thank Dan Harris and his maintenance team for their constant care in setting up, taking down and the continuous cleaning of our church that makes it a welcoming place for us, but most importantly for our visitors. The thing no one sees, for example, after the Easter Vigil, which ended at 10:30 p.m., Dan and part of his team were here until well after midnight making sure the church was ready for 7:15 a.m. Mass on Easter. Then they were here at 6:00 a.m. on Easter as well. Thank you! And, thank you to our front office staff, who make sure things are running when many of us are focused on Holy Week and Easter. A big thank you to Kris Partain, who is present so many hours and days. Without her hard work, focus to detail, and vast knowledge, we would be lost. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our clergy our Pastor Fr. Trout for his confidence in us, Fr. Joe, Fr. Martin, and Fr. John Hennessey and Deacons Dave, Dennis, and Tom for their support in all we do. Most parishioners do not see or experience what goes on behind the scenes to make sure we are ready the countless hours spent going over the details of each week s liturgies, meetings to ensure we cover all of the details, many practices for Holy Week, and the getting all items ready for our parish community. It is a privilege to serve the people of St. Joseph Catholic Church and it is with profound gratitude that I thank all of you for making my ministry here so meaningful! Rejoicing in the Risen Christ, Deacon George Kashmar Pastoral Director of Ministries

6 Faith Formation Men s Weekend April 29 and 30 Those of us who have attended a weekend have seen firsthand how the experience can provide us with authentic, genuine relationships. Our friendships become real. It transforms a parish as large as ours into one that seems comfortable, just the right size and fit like our favorite weekend shirt or jacket. It feels like our very own. Like any relationship, a parish community becomes stronger as we learn more about each other. In our hurry up world, where we often seem to just go through the motions, it is difficult for something like that to happen. But when we learn about one another, we appreciate the gifts that we each have, and our parish grows richer and more vibrant. Sometimes it just takes some extra effort for that to happen. We can all find excuses not to give it a shot. We ve all had them. So maybe it s time to do something for yourself. Like a weekend away from all the reasons we give as excuses. The Men s Weekend will begin on Saturday morning, April 29 and conclude Sunday afternoon, April 30, right here at St. Joseph Catholic Church. While we respect that most have many conflicts of time over the course of a weekend, it is important that you commit to attend and participate throughout the entire weekend. God is calling you, as he calls all of us, to renew St. Joseph Parish. This is your invitation to join us. Come and See Upcoming Men s Ministry Events. The Once & Future Church: An Easter Journey Through the Acts of the Apostles Prayers for Vocations to the Priesthood Pope Francis said, The vocation is truly a treasure that God places in the hearts of some men, chosen by Him and called to follow Him in this special state of life. This treasure, that must be discovered and brought to light, is not made to enrich someone alone. He who is called to the ministry is not the master of his vocation, but rather the administrator of a gift that God has entrusted to him for the good of all the people, or rather for all humanity In support of the Archdiocesan request that parishes provide a Holy Hour to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and the Spiritual Formation Committee have scheduled Holy Hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays were chosen because it coincides with Holy 7 to Paul and beyond. Revisit the earliest days of the Church and the extraordinary women and men who were transformed by the Spirit of Christ, and in turn transformed our world. In this era of Renew My Church, come and see how we began and what we are called to recapture. in the Koenig Center Bring your Bible and a friend! Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. Please consider joining us as we pray for those who have been called. If you are unable to participate on Thursdays, we would like to provide an alternative for this prayer time by asking you to pray a short decade (ten Hail Mary s) of the rosary along with the prayer given each week for an increase in priestly vocations. This week s decade of the rosary: 4th Luminous Mystery: The Transfiguration Jesus strengthened the faith of His Apostles by allowing His divinity to be momentarily perceived. He wished them to gain a supernatural perspective on His forthcoming Passion and Death. Let us offer this decade for all those who are being called as priests and religious that they may have the grace to recognize God s call in the midst of life and courageously accept carrying the Cross.

9 Prayer & Worship Early on Easter Morning (John 20:1-2) On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don t know where they put him. As Mary of Magdala was the first to discover the empty tomb, women of our parish ministered as altar servers at our first Mass on Easter Sunday morning. Mass for All Who Grieve the Loss of a Child Join our faith community as we celebrate this special mass on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this mass is twofold: first to remember the children we have lost due to accident, illness, miscarriage or abortion. We may have lost them recently or long ago. Their age doesn t matter; they are always our children. The second is to offer comfort and support to the parents, other family members and friends as we join together in prayer and ask for God s healing grace. This mass includes participation in a beautiful floral tribute and a special prayer of healing. Refreshments will be served after mass. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Luke 24: Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Response: Glory to You, O Lord That very day, the first day of the week, two of Jesus disciples were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus, and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, What are you discussing as you walk along? They stopped, looking downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days? And he replied to them, What sort of things? They said to him, The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see. And he said to them, Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over. So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us? So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection In next Sunday s Gospel, Luke describes an encounter two disciples had with Christ on the road to Emmaus. When Jesus meets Cleopas and his companion fleeing Jerusalem, He reveals Himself as the Messiah by relating all of the Scriptures prophesying His coming, but it is not until the breaking of the bread that Jesus is recognized. How true this can be for us as well. We gather at each Mass to hear the words of Jesus and to learn how He came into the world to save us through His loving sacrifice. But it is in the breaking of the bread that we are strengthened and nourished as we recognize His true and real presence. At each mass, after the word of God has been proclaimed, we are more open to have our hearts burn within us as we partake of the Eucharist. Our challenge is to prepare our hearts and souls so that when we approach the Eucharist, we will be in awe of the gift we are about to receive. We can then pray for the grace to have our hearts aflame with the love of Christ as we return to our daily lives, so that we can be disciples who share the Risen Lord with all those we encounter. For further reflection on The Meaning of the Eucharist, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs Reflection Questions 1. The Holy Spirit inspired the scripture writers with wisdom so that we might know and believe in Jesus as the Son of God. How might I use Scripture to strengthen my belief in Jesus and to live out His example of love? 2. What might I do to better prepare myself to be most open to Christ s real presence in the Eucharist? 3. What can I do carry the flame of Christ s love out into the world and give witness to the difference encountering Christ has made in my life? How can I give witness to the real presence of Christ in the world by how I serve others during the next week? Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 4:23-31; Ps 2:1-9; Jn 3:1-8 Tuesday: 1 Pt 5:5b-14; Ps 89:2-3, 6-7, 16-17; Mk 16:15-20 St. Mark Wednesday: Acts 5:17-26; Ps 34:2-9; Jn 3:16-21 Thursday: Acts 5:27-33; Ps 34:2, 9, 17-20; Jn 3:31-36 Friday: Acts 5:34-42; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Jn 6:1-15 St. Peter Chanel, St. Louis Grignion de Montfort Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21 St. Catherine of Siena Sunday: Acts 2:14, 22-33; Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11; 1 Pt 1:17-21; 16 Lk 24:13-35
