Community-for-the-Kingdom On January 7 and 12, Faith Weaving Families gathered for their annual potluck dinner and presentation by Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson. The families are studying the New Testament this year and their theme song of prayer is Just Say Jesus. Dr. Terry s presentation was on Miracles and, with his unique definition, families were fully engaged in seeing miracles in many of life s challenges and recognizing that joy can coexist with suffering. 2 Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I write to you this week with gratitude and humility. I am extremely thankful for the generous nature of our parish. More importantly, I am humbled by your responsiveness. It is time again for the Archdiocese Annual Catholic Appeal and I would like to review how your donations are used. There are three general categories of request for your financial support: are funds collected to support the ongoing operations of the church (i.e. insurance, electrical, heating, water, salaries, etc.) Our weekly collections have benefited from the increase in donations in response to our request last fall. Your generosity continues to benefit our parish and allows us all to continue to respond to the invitation of Jesus to include our Social Justice ministries and special causes. These collections help support various causes like natural disaster relief, missionaries, seminary education, as well as our Social Justice ministry programs which support over 19 different agencies. These programs are important to our St. Joseph community and provide care for those most in need. Thank you for taking to heart the message of my Christmas letter and continuing to help those in our community through your generous donations of time, talent and treasure. I am grateful for this and your continued answer to follow Jesus through love and care for our neighbors, especially those most in need. ) is an initiative of the larger Catholic Church. This supports the Archdiocese of Chicago and its local parishes. On behalf of Cardinal Cupich, I am writing to you asking for your consideration in making a donation. The money from the ACA goes to support many causes in the Archdiocese. Over 90% of the total funds collected are directly used to support critical agencies and ministries of the Church. Any amount collected, exceeding our goal, will be returned to our parish in the form of a rebate. Last year we received $147,000 from the ACA. This spring we will be completing our lighting project and beginning our roofing project. We have been saving funds from last year s Annual Catholic Appeal rebate and we will combine those funds with our 2018 rebate check. Even though we have these funds reserved for our roofing project, we will need to save more than both rebate checks combined. In April, you will see a renamed blue envelope in your offertory packet. This will also be available online. The funds collected through these envelopes will go toward the last phase of the LED lighting in the Narthex and help provide the balance of the funds needed for a new church roof. I hope you will support the Cardinal s request with a donation to the ACA. Any amount would be appreciated. Thank you for your attention Annual Catholic Appeal: Come, Follow Me This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Come, Follow Me was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Lenten Information All ministries of the parish are reminded that there are to be no meetings scheduled during Holy Week, March 25-March 31. There will be a day-long opportunity for Reconciliation on March 24 from 11 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Confessions will not be heard on Holy Saturday, March 31. 6 Social Justice & Service Green Tip of the Week SELL BY AND BEST BY DATES USDA estimates that 30 percent of food is lost or wasted at the retail and consumer level. Food manufacturers frequently use a variety of phrases, such as Sell-by and Use-by on product labels to describe quality dates on a voluntary basis. FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) is changing its guidance to recommend the use of Best if Used By because research shows that this phrase is easily understood by consumers as an indicator of quality, rather than safety. When you find a long-lost food item in your refrigerator or pantry, use your judgment regarding sell by or best by dates, as they are just guidelines. Products may still be good long after their expiration date. Youth On Sunday, January 28, three Boy Scouts from Troop 194 who are St. Joseph Catholic Church parishioners received the Pope Pius XII religious emblem at an annual ceremony held at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. The Pope Pius XII award is a vocationbased program developed by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) for members of the Boy Scouts of America of the Catholic faith. The goals of the Pope Pius XII program are as follows: To examine how being a Christian affects daily life in the real world; to challenge Scouts to evaluate L to R: Lucas T., Edward S., Most Rev. The theme, Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed, was most evident as we celebrated Mass together, then hosted our 7th Annual Pancake Breakfast and Open House. These events were made possible through the incredible generosity of our school families, present and past. We had scores of parents, students, and alumni greeting and serving at Mass, making pancakes, giving tours of the school to prospective families, providing snacks and lunches for the staff, and working at the Book Fair. Students of all ages gave tours, acted as ambassadors and participated in service projects including letterwriting and Valentine s Day card campaigns for Winchester House, Brookdale Senior Living and Logan Correctional Facility. We always go all-out to celebrate the big event. As families, God is calling us to go all-out and celebrate the big event that he has given us: our faith live and journeys on earth. Just like our football teams, we have to come prepared and train, to be prepared to live out God s missions for us on earth, so that we can be with him in eternal life. How do we do that? We need to make time to pray, to talk and listen with God as he guides each day of our lives. We also need to come together as a team our spiritual family each weekend at Mass. Just like on the football field, there is strength in numbers. When families come together to pray, their prayers are united with the people around them, with everyone raising their minds, hearts and hands to God. We are all part of this team. Tip for the week: Don t skip out on your role as part of God s family of faith. Make time each weekend to celebrate Mass and be fed with the Eucharist, our spiritual food, so 10you are ready to head back into the world on your journey of faith.

For this purpose have I come. (Mark 1:35, 38) In today s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Mark 1:40-45 Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Response: Glory to You, O Lord A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, If you wish, you can make me clean. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, I do will it. Be made clean. The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. He said to him, See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them. The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection For the second week in a row, we encounter Jesus awesome healing power. In last Sunday s gospel, Jesus healed Simon s mother in-law. In this coming Sunday s gospel, Jesus heals a leper. While both are relieved of their afflictions and restored to health, we notice a slightly different reaction to their healing. Simon s mother-in-law immediately rose up and began to serve Jesus. The leper, despite Jesus request to remain silent, goes about spreading the good news of Christ s healing power. Both were overcome with gratitude and joy that could not be contained. Being cured of leprosy was not just a healing but the removal of one of the heaviest burdens with which an individual could be saddled. In Jesus time, leprosy not only meant that the leper would be rejected by society, but would be sentenced to a life of absolute squalor with a slow flesh-eating death. While the burdens we carry at different times in our lives may or may not be as significant as those of the leper, we can surely recall the joy and relief we have experienced when those burdens have been lifted or when hope has been restored. This gospel reminds us that Jesus has the power to remove even the heaviest burdens we are carrying. Whether we turn to Him in prayer or the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus will be there with the graces of healing, acceptance and forgiveness that will leave us feeling restored and grateful so grateful that we can t help but want to serve Him and to share the good news of His healing power. What is your reaction to hardship, hopelessness and stress? Is your first impulse to turn to Jesus and seek His help and healing or are you more likely to try to go it alone? Likewise what is your response to those wonderful and special things that happen in your life which are a cause for joy and hope? Do you overflow with gratitude and seek to give God credit for all of the blessings He graciously and abundantly showers upon you?
