2 NEW CHALICES AND CIBORIA At Mass during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, you will notice new gold chalices and ciboria. The swirl hammered design, with gold exterior and a satin gold plated interior, is a beautiful complement to our tabernacle donated by the University of St. Mary of the Lake. The tabernacle was recently restored to its original glory with funds donated from Ellie Sage and her late sister, Florence Zarletti. The majority of the funds for the purchase of these additions were from parishioners. We are grateful and blessed for your donations. Purchase of the new chalices and ciboria was necessary as the existing set, used for years, needed considerable refurbishment. The cost to refurbish exceeded the purchase of the new and more appropriate set. The existing set will be retained for use, as needed. Both sets will provide us with ample supply, especially during our Christmas liturgies. Please Make Your Gift to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Love Your Neighbor As Yourself Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Love Your Neighbor As Yourself, was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our parish, our Archdiocese, and throughout the world. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. When our parish reaches its goal of $134,611 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our inpew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Series Part 4 As one enters into job search, our first and primary task is to answer the question, What do I want to do? If you are clear about what you want, it will help you present yourself to a prospective employer in a confident and succinct manner. Developing a strong job search strategy starts with understanding your unique value proposition. Over these five meetings, we are pleased to offer sessions to help you: 1) Determine what skills, talents, strengths and abilities make you unique, what kind of activity energizes you and makes you happy, and what types of jobs are likely to provide you with the most personal satisfaction, 2) Help you develop the language to clearly articulate your unique traits in just a few sentences, and 3) Create a crisp, clear value proposition for yourself and your prospective employers. Please join us whether you are currently in transition, or just thinking about changing jobs. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from and connect with people who are here to help you! Blessed is she who comes EXPLORING THE DIACONATE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO THE CALL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CONSIDER A VOCATION may sometimes be a gentle voice stirring the soul or a personal longing in our hearts. It may be the urging of friends or spouses. It can also find birth in the invitation of pastors, deacons and parish leaders to pursue such an inquiry. No matter the source of our questions, each of us needs to be affirmed and encouraged to bring a call to a vocation to prayerful discernment. The Institute for Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend an Exploring the Diaconate session. It is a time to pray, discuss, and learn more about the discernment process and the formation program that aspirants and candidates pursue. Please join us, with your wives, if married, as we explore the potential of a vocation, engage in dialogue and pray in search of the next step. All are welcome to attend any of the sessions. Pray for Vocations The Archdiocese recommends that parishes provide for a holy hour to pray for priestly vocations. In support of this, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and our Spiritual Formation Committee has scheduled a holy hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. Thursdays have been chosen as an ideal day for having the prayer hour as it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. If you are looking for a special action this year, what better way than a short visit on Thursday to pray for an increase in priestly vocations? If you are unable to join us, please keep vocations in your prayers. Learn more at Thoughts on Giving For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20) The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear it s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel Matthew 5: Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Response: Glory to You, O Lord Jesus said to his disciples: You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand over your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow. You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection In the Gospels, one of Jesus primary roles is that of teacher. As the Son of God, He teaches us about the love of the Father and helps us to know the rewards of following God s ways. In next week s Gospel, He helps us to see what is being asked of us, and He does so in such a clear way that lets us know it s not going to be easy. He tells us that when someone strikes us on our right cheek, we are called to turn the other cheek as well. Our pride can easily get in the way when we are insulted or wronged. But in asking us to be meek and humble He is really asking us to imitate Him by loving in all circumstances. He wants our first reaction to be empathy not anger or retribution for He knows (and wants us to believe) in the power of love. Implicit in this is the knowledge and belief that we are all God s children loved equally by Him. Jesus is calling us all to a life of holiness and showing us that the way to holiness is to be led by love. Following Jesus is reflecting the love of God Who is love. Being good human beings isn t enough, because the world s standard for goodness allows us to react in non-loving ways we are not called to love our enemies or anyone who hurts us. Jesus knows that love has the power to transform the hearts of those who act unlovingly to us. Loving those who may not show us love is one of the ways we are called to spread the Gospel. In doing so, we can give others a chance to understand God s love and mercy and inspire them to seek Him out in their own lives. For further reflection on the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs ; and on promoting peace in the world, Reflection Questions 1. Can I do what Christ asks of me in this Gospel? What is my greatest challenge? What steps might I take to grow in humility and love? Are there any areas of my life where my pride leads me to believe I don t really need God s help? 2. Which areas of Church teaching and practice might I need to humbly accept and submit to? How can I more actively practice my faith so as to grow in my ability to follow the directives of Christ to turn the other cheek and to love my enemies? 3. The Gospel tells us to love our enemies. This requires action on our part. Enemies can be those with whom we have differences as well as those who are merely different from us. Are there particular enemies that I need to reach out to in love in my family? My workplace? My parish? In my community? Readings for the Week Monday: Gn 4:1-15, 25; Ps 50:1, 8, 16bc-17, 20-21; Mk 8:11-13 Tuesday: Gn 6:5-8; 7:1-5, 10; Ps 29:1a, 2, 3ac-4, 3b, 9c-10; Mk 8:14-21 Ss.
