3 Community Building St. Joseph s Windy City Tour For 23 years Dick and Janet Jacob organized this popular event for our parish, touring some very scenic and historic sites in Chicago. This was truly a Community Building event which was always sold out. We are all blessed to have had the Jacobs in our parish and for them to give of their time to organize this great event for years. The time has come to turn over the organization of this event to a new person or team. Dick has graciously offered to help the new leadership take over the planning. Now all we need is someone (or a team) to take over. If anyone is interested, please contact Gerry Salzman at gesint49@gmail.com or for more information. Help us carry on this wonderful tradition. 6 Faith Formation HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE JOIN OUR FAITH? WE INVITE YOU TO A MEETING TO EXPLORE BECOMING INVOLVED At this time of the year we are hearing readings from the Acts of the Apostles and how they began spreading the teachings of Jesus after his resurrection. We are all evangelists in how we live our lives; how we treat our families, our neighbors and all we meet. Our faith is a journey which we each take our entire life. We should seek to continue to grow and explore new ways to be Jesus to the people we meet. One way to grow your own faith is to become involved in a ministry at the parish. Have you ever thought about helping people join our faith? At this time the Right of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is in need of adding new members to the team. The current leadership team members will host an informational meeting on Wednesday, May 31 at the Formation Center in Room C. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. A presentation about the team s responsibilities, the roles we are looking to fill and the process for discerning who will join us for the coming year will be discussed. Any questions will be answered and next steps outlined. Please take some time and prayerfully consider if joining this ministry is something you would like to explore. We look forward to seeing you and discussing this with you. No previous experience in this ministry is necessary The classes for participants are held on Tuesday nights. The commitment is for one year beginning this summer. The adults who seek to become Catholic attend classes from September thru April. You will never experience the Easter Vigil the same again. Prayers for Vocations to the Priesthood Pope Francis said, The vocation is truly a treasure that God places in the hearts of some men, chosen by Him and called to follow Him in this special state of life. This treasure, that must be discovered and brought to light, is not made to enrich someone alone. He who is called to the ministry is not the master of his vocation, but rather the administrator of a gift that God has entrusted to him for the good of all the people, or rather for all humanity In support of the Archdiocesan request that parishes provide a Holy Hour to pray for vocations to the priesthood, the St. Joseph Vocation Committee and the Spiritual Formation Committee have scheduled Holy Hour, with Eucharistic Adoration, to be held every Thursday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the church to offer prayers for priestly vocations. In Memory Please pray for the souls of: Joseph John Picciuca Raymond Eiden Ronald Palac 7 Thursdays were chosen because it coincides with Holy Thursday and the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. Please consider joining us as we pray for those who have been called. If you are unable to participate on Thursdays, we would like to provide an alternative for this prayer time by asking you to pray a short decade (ten Hail Mary s) of the rosary along with the prayer given each week for an increase in priestly vocations. This week s decade of the rosary: 2nd Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar For our sake, Jesus offered Himself to obtain our salvation. Let us offer this decade for the grace so that many young people might feel the desire in their hearts to offer themselves to God as priests and religious. 10 Social Justice & Service Memorial Day was born out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land, To all of our relatives and friends who stepped forward to serve in our Armed Forces and gave their lives, may God continue to hold you in his arms. To all of those brave men and women who served and died, we pay tribute for your sacrifice to insure our country remains the land of the free and the home of the brave. We Offer Prayers for All Who Currently Serve Our Country Please keep the following military in your prayers. We salute them, one and all! 16 Breaking Open the Word A Journey to Discipleship Jesus Companions Us Through Scripture 1. Proclaim God s Word. Choose someone to read the Scripture. After reading, there is silence from the group in reverence. 2. Invite Response. Invite individuals to respond to a word, phrase or passage that strikes them in some way. 3. Praise God. After a period of response, close by leading the group in praise of God by praying together the Glory Be. Next Sunday s Gospel John 20: Leader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Response: Glory to You, O Lord On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection feasts we might call to mind Christmas or Easter, but for Christians Pentecost should be anticipated and celebrated with the same spiritual joy. At Christmas we celebrate the Father s great love for us in the gift of the Messiah, the Christ Child. At Easter we celebrate the promise of eternal life that is available to all who accept the Father s love and follow the teaching of Jesus His Son. On Pentecost we rejoice in the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Divine Advocate who promises to make the love of the Father and the teaching of the Son available to bring us peace, joy and comfort. The Holy Spirit provides us the strength we need on our earthly path to holiness and our ultimate return to Heaven. It is the Holy Spirit who makes the love of the Father and the life, death and resurrection of Jesus such a powerful influence for us. At our Confirmation, the graces of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are activated: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord. (For a brief yet insightful commentary on the seven gifts go to ) The gifts of the Holy Spirit provide us with all of the grace necessary to live a Christian life. They provide us with the insight to understand God s love and to appreciate God s call to give testimony to that love in how we live our lives. We can be reminded of these gifts not only at Confirmation but every time we receive the Eucharist, a communion with the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ, which embodies the love of the Father and graces us with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your people and enkindle in us the fire of Your love! For further reflection on the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit, see The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraphs ; on Pentecost and the Holy Spirit Working Through the Church, paragraphs Reflection Questions Readings for the Week Monday: Acts 19:1-8; Ps 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab; Jn 16:29-33 Tuesday: Acts 20:17-27; Ps 68:10-11, 20-21; Jn 17:1-11a Wednesday: Zep 3:14-18a or Rom 12:9-16; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 1:39-56 The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday: Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; Ps 16:1-2a, 5, 7-11; Jn 17:20-26 St. Justin Friday: Acts 25:13b-21; Ps 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab; Jn 21:15-19 Ss.
