Church = : Part 2 Maybe you remember the childhood rhyme, Here s the church, and here s the steeple. Open the doors and see all the people. This rhyme and hand movement was fun to do, but may lead us to a poor understanding of church. When we talk about church, we frequently are referring to Sunday worship. In fact, church to most individuals is relegated to this weekly one hour experience. This is far from the biblical understanding. Church is the people of God on a mission. Acts 1:8 reminds us of our mission. When the Holy Spirit comes on you, you will be able to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, even the ends of the earth. This describes people, like you and I, who are working together to carry God s grace to all people. That is our mission. That happens throughout our week, throughout our lives. For most people, church involves only 1.8 percent of their time. That s when we are part of the church. The truth is that we are the church 100 percent of the time. We need to understand that our worship is lessened when we have no mission the rest of the 98.2 percent of the week. I believe that high quality of worship is best experienced when there is passion in worship. The worship leader must show passion. But if there is no passion in the people in the pews, there still is no passion. How does passion grow for worship? I believe it depends on the 98.2 percent of the week that isn t in worship. For passion to grow, we must first be passionate about Jesus and His mission. Then our worship will also be filled with passionate praise for the one who gives us life. This is just something to think about. But add to your thoughts how passionate God is for you. He s passionate enough to send His Son to the cross. Come, Holy Spirit, and stir within us passion each and everyday for You and all for whom You died. Questions: Contact Marge Kretschmar / Glenace Klinker Library Notes: Suggested Reading By: Donna Estes THE LUCKY ONE by: Nicholas Sparks This is a story about a U.S. Marine who finds a photograph of a young woman while he is serving in Iraq. He tries to find the man who lost the photo, but fails. He carries the photo with him at all times and his comrades and best friend, Victor, come to believe that it is his "lucky charm". When he returns from war he begins a quest to find the woman in the picture - walking across country from Colorado to North Carolina with his German Shepherd dog, Zeus. It is a great story about the power of fate in our lives. Another book by Nicholas Sparks that you might like is THE WEDDING. It is a follow-up to his book The Notebook.

3 Volume No Page 3 The middle school youth got together for Subway and Movie Night on Saturday, September 25th. They enjoyed a nice walk to Subway goofing around with their friends and returned to the LOL Cafe to enjoy their sandwiches, some sodas and snacks. They then popped in a movie and began working on their service project for the Harvest Festival. This year the youth are making and tying fleece blankets to sell at the Harvest Festival. Half their proceeds from the blankets will be donated to an organization of their choice and the rest will be put away in their fundraising account. Eleven fleece blankets were cut and tied! Madeline Smith was our "QC" (quality control) girl - and made sure everything was looking good before she folded them up and put in the pile to be sold at the Harvest Festival!! Fun times!! The high school youth got together for Pizza and a Wild night of Wii playing on Saturday, September 11th. They enjoyed a friendly competition of bowling, tennis, rock band, etc. It was a fierce competition especially between Deirdre and Shane who rocked hard at Rock Band!! The youth had a short meeting before playing the Wii and agreed to change the name of the High School group to Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO) following in the Lutheran traditions. We also discussed community projects and fun activities that they are interested in. The event for October will be a Camping Trip to Tracy's family ranch in Thrall, TX on October 2-3! 4 Page 4 Life-Lines Thanks to God for Christian education! Many members of our congregation have been generously giving their time, energy and their possessions to spread God s Word through the education of our youth. The teachers feel they have grown in their faith by teaching our youth about God s Word. Did you know we have some teachers that have been teaching Sunday school for over 6 years? Our Sunday school program had a wonderful start this Jubilee Sunday focusing on the Parable of the Sower. Patti Kassel delighted the children by dressing up like a banana as she summed up the wonderful lesson. The education committee and the Sunday school teachers feel very blessed to be working with such wonderful children and with Virginia Pfluger, our Sunday school superintendent, who has led our Sunday school the past couple years. Please continue to grow our ministry by inviting a friend to join us for Sunday school. From the Stewardship Committee...
