Skip Wachsmann NEWS FROM THE MISSIONAL RIVER LISTENING TEAM Since the last time you heard from the Missional River 2.0 Team we have been praying, studying scripture, having discussions and following our Missional River guidebook, all with the goal of finding where God is calling us to be in our neighborhood and community. One of the tools we are planning to use to help us with this journey is a Congregation-wide Anonymous Survey to be distributed in January. The team is at work listening and your voices matter. To provide ample time for reflection, we want to share the survey questions ahead of time. They are: How has God positioned this congregation to serve its neighbors? If this congregation disappeared tomorrow, what would the neighborhood miss? What is keeping this congregation from growing? What are three things about this congregation that you would not want to change as you welcome new people? (Besides being friendly.) What are you personally passionate about that would make a difference in the neighborhood? The Missional River Team will review the responses with the goal of finding insight into where God is calling our church to serve and how best we can move into the future. If you have questions about our mission please talk to Shannon Anderson, Randi Ladolcetta, Tony, Lopez, Yuki Miyamoto-Mendez or Pastor Skip. And, keep your eyes and ears open about the survey in January 2019.

Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People by Nadia Bolz-Weber WHAT IF THE PERSON YOU VE BEEN TRYING TO AVOID IS YOUR BEST SHOT AT GRACE TODAY? AND WHAT IF THAT IS THE POINT? God keeps showing up in the least likely of people a church-loving agnostic, a drag queen, a felonious Bishop, and a gun-toting member of the NRA. In a time when many have rightly become disillusioned with Christianity, Accidental Saints demonstrates what happens when ordinary people share bread and wine, struggle with scripture together, and tell each other the truth about their real lives. This unforgettable account of their faltering steps toward wholeness will ring true for believer and skeptic alike. THIS CLASS WILL MEET IN THE CAFÉ. 7 Page 7 The Nominating Committee of Lord of Life is currently meeting to prayerfully select members of the congregation to be up for election for the Council at the annual congregational meeting in January. If you would like to be a member of the Council, please contact Carol Gaskamp (cdgaskamp@att.net), Deb Grunska (grunskadeb@gmail.com) or Barb Haskins (bmmhaskins@gmail.com). Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have any questions about the role of a council member. OPPORTUNITY FOR MINISTRY Church Council is searching for someone who will continue LOLLC s celebration ministry and it may be done from home. On behalf of the church, you would be sending birthday cards, anniversary cards, get well cards, and sympathy cards to active participants within our faith community. The church office will purchase the cards, provide the stamps, and provide names of the recipients. You sign the cards (Lord of Life Lutheran Church), add an encouraging word (optional), address the envelope, apply the postage, and mail in a timely manner from your own mail box if you prefer. This ministry continues to recognize the importance of community and you are needed to keep it going. Contact the church office with your desire to be that someone. Council offers a special Thank You to Patsy Walker who served faithfully in this position for many years.

8 Life-Lines HARVEST FEST THANK YOU!! Thanks to everyone that contributed to and volunteered at the Harvest Festival this year!! Your help with the planning and outreach, bake sale, café concessions, youth sponsored drinks, silent auction, children s activities, vendor coordination, decorating, setting up, taking down, cleaning, serving, etc you are all AWESOME! Your efforts and contributions of time, talents and resources are appreciated so much and this event would not have been successful without each and every one of you. Special thanks to the Blessed Day Out Kids program at Lord of Life for their generous contribution to the children's petting zoo. The funds raised from the event will go towards the purchase of gifts (clothing and one gift item) for the 4 local families that Lord of Life has adopted to sponsor for the holidays (they were adopted through Operation Blue Santa last year). Through your participation in the festival as a volunteer or by visiting the vendors and buying baked goods, you will help share the harvest by providing gifts for these special families. You may have seen students from the UT School of Film at the festival who were working on a project. They were thankful to have our festival to provide the scene for their work, and they will be making a short video for us. We will share that video with the congregation as soon as it is ready. We also appreciate the students from Pearson Ranch Middle School National Junior Honor Society. They had fun at the festival leading the children's games, face painting and helping with crafts. We are glad that they got to meet us and hope that relationship can continue in the future. If you have any suggestions for next year's event, please Kelley and she will share the information with those that coordinated this year. Page 8

12 Life-Lines Page 12 POINSETTIAS Please help us beautify our sanctuary on Christmas Eve by purchasing a poinsettia! Envelopes are available in the Welcome Center for the next few Sundays. To purchase one, fill out the envelope and place it in the ushers baskets on the way out on Sunday mornings, or contact Kelley in the church office This year we are ordering our poinsettias from BIG, the Brookwood community in Georgetown. This excerpt is from their website: Brookwood in Georgetown is a very out of the box innovative vocational community for adults with special needs where everything we make we sell in a beautiful high end gift shop, cafe and greenhouse. We want to change the way our world views this population by taking the "status quo of providing these individuals with custodial care to these individuals creating beautiful, marketable items to sell to help sustain the vocational community they enjoy every day The cost per plant is $13.50 with all proceeds going to BIG. You can pay the full amount of $13.50, or pay $10 per plant and the church will cover the rest (as we ve subsidized in past years). The deadline to order is Sunday, December 16. You can pick up your plant(s) and take it home any time after the 7:30 service on Christmas Eve. If you have any questions, please contact the church office or Deb Grunska. CHURCH & TREE DECORATING We will decorate the church and Christmas tree, and hang the outside lights on our deck, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 PM. We d love to have everyone come join us for this fun time! CAROLING TO HOME-BOUND MEMBERS The choir will be singing to our Home- Bound members on Dec. 16 from 1:00 5:00; we will meet at the church around 12:45. We would like to invite everyone to join us! We have so much fun visiting and singing to our home-bound members; and they love having us come sing to them! Please consider joining us. After we re done caroling, we like to join together for a potluck dinner very informal but a great way to end a day of singing and rejoicing with each other.

13 ELCA GOOD GIFTS Again this year, on Dec. 30 and Jan. 6, we ll have ELCA Good Gifts ornaments on our Christmas trees. Please consider taking an ornament and purchasing what you select. Place a check for the cost of the ornament you select in the offering plate, indicating in the Notes section what you are purchasing. This is a wonderful opportunity to help the ELCA address world hunger. There will be ELCA Good Gifts catalogs in the Worship Center or visit their website at Page 13 FLOWER CHART Members of Lord of Life have blessed and adorned our sanctuary with beautiful flowers in praise and honor to our Lord and for other special events in their lives during Thanks for your generosity now it's time to do it again!! The new flower chart for 2019 is out in the Welcome Center. Hurry and sign up. Let's see how fast we can fill it up so you can have the special dates you would like. (More than one can sign up for any Sunday). SPECIAL HIGH CHURCH SERVICE We will hold a special High Church service on Jan. 6. This is the style of worship familiar to Martin Luther and the early Lutherans. We hope you will be able to join us for this special service at both the early and late services on Jan. 6. It is so amazing how we can worship our Lord using all these different styles from the non-liturgical, contemporary service we enjoyed in September, to the very-liturgical, high church service we will enjoy in January, to our usual modified-liturgical services we celebrate every Sunday at both the early and late services here at Lord of Life. No matter the style of worship, they are all an expression of our way to praise and worship our awesome triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
