We begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for repentance and for God s mercy. We are created to experience joy in communion with God, to love one another, and to live in harmony with creation. But our sinful rebellion separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, so that we do not enjoy the life our Creator intended. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to a discipline that contends against evil and resists whatever leads us away from love of God and neighbor. I invite you, therefore, to the discipline of Lent self-examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love strengthened by the gifts of word and sacrament. Let us continue our journey through these forty days to the great Three Days of Jesus death and resurrection. The phrase discipline of Lent always seems to stick out. Just what is meant by this phrase? Looking up the word discipline in the dictionary, under the second entry, you will find this definition: to train or develop by instruction and exercise especially in self-control. The Ministry of Education has provided us with two such opportunities for discipline thr oughout the Lenten season. The first is a daily devotional booklet entitled, Moving Toward The Cross: Reflections on the Writings of Frederick Buechner. What a great way to contend against evil and resist whatever leads you away from love of God and neighbor! Taking the time, making the commitment to exercise your own spiritual growth during this season of self-examination and repentance will indeed take discipline. The second opportunity is the Look to the Cross self-denial folders. These folders invite us to place 50 cents a day into the designated coin slots maybe as you read your daily devotion as a way of remembering the love shown to us through our Savior and Lord, Jesus the Christ. Keeping up this discipline on a daily basis will total $20. Lord of Life as a community of faith will then send these gifts to one of two places. Half of the total will go to Refugee Services of Texas-Austin. This r elationship began on Sunday, January 29, 2017 on Refugee Sunday here at LOLLC. The other half will go to Williamson County Children s Advocacy Center to assist victims of child abuse. The season of Lent is often associated with giving something up. Again this season of Lent I invite you to take on something, the discipline of Lent. In the name of Jesus, Pr. Skip

In his book, Beck reintroduces the devil to the modern world with a biblical, bold, and urgent vision of spiritual warfare: we must resist the devil by joining the kingdom of God s subversive campaign to interrupt the world with love. Because if Jesus took Satan seriously, says Beck, then so should we. This class will meet in the cafe. THREE MONTHS WITH REVELATION: by Justo Gonzalez. In this study of Revelation, Justo Gonzalez uses the see-judge-act method to bring readers closer to the text and informs and challenges the daily life of Christians. This class will meet in the sanctuary. THE SHACK: by William P. Young. (Women's Study Group). This novel is an invitation to journey to the very heart of God. Challenging and inviting us to see and live with our Trinity God in a whole new light. This class will meet in the office conference room. 5 Volume No Kindred Sisters Page 5 Kindred Sisters had their February meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Koinonia Cafe at LOLLC. We began with devotions and prayer. Our speaker was Dr. J. H. Rodriguez of Pure Chiropractic Wellness. He spoke to us on "Aging Gracefully", giving us guidelines on nutrition, especially recommending organic food, especially organic meats. He stressed that our bodies are a gift from God to be cared for with proper nutrition, plenty of rest, good medical and physical care, and living life as stress-free as possible. Prayer is an excellent way to de-stress. Thank you, Dr. Rodriguez! We discussed our Lutheran World Relief (LWR) project of Personal Care Kits. We also sent out some valentine cards to our shut-ins, which everyone signed. We all enjoyed fellowship as we ate our sack lunches and enjoyed dessert and refreshments provided by Glenace Klinker. Thank you so much, Glenace! Please note the Personal Care Kits article in this Life -Lines, listing all the needed articles for the kits! We hope everyone at LOLLC can donate articles listed, or money toward shipping costs for this worthy project. With special bar codes, we can now track where our kits go. In 2016, our kits went to Angola in Africa, the Ukraine, and to Syrian refugees. Reconciling in Christ: Questions of Clarity On March 5, a meeting will be held after the late service. The meeting will be to answers questions regarding what being Reconciled in Christ means. Please join Pastor Skip and council members as we make this move to be a more welcoming church. As you'll remember, the seed was planted over a year ago when congregation members filled out a survey recognizing our strength as a friendly, welcoming church. Ministry leaders, council members and Pastor Skip attended a workshop last January to help us build a Roadmap to improve on our out reach. After prayer and direction by the Holy Spirit, we recognized God is calling us to become designated as a Reconciled Church in the ELCA, which means we intentionally welcome people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and their allies into our faith community. Twelve engaging discussions were facilitated by Pastor Skip last summer with a wrap up session Dec. 3 as we look forward to a more inclusive future. On March 5, a meeting will be held after late service to clarify any questions you may have as to what this means. Please contact our spiritual leader, Pastor Skip, or any member of council: John Duarte, Dave Smith, Randi Ladolcetta, Carol Gaskamp, and Mark Waggoner.

9 Volume No Mid-week Lenten Services Page 9 When the Worship Ministry Team began the process to prepare for this year s Lenten services, Psalm 46:10 kept running through our minds Be still and know that I am God. We began researching how to incorporate that stillness into our mid-week services. Too many of us run through our lives we have so many distractions constantly bombarding us that we spend our lives just trying to stay afloat. So this year, our mid-week services will include repetitive song, prayer, scripture, and time for quiet meditation and reflection. We will use services from Holden Prayer Around the Cross that is based on Taizѐ services. We hope you will be able to join us as we intentionally take the time to be still and know God. If you d like to stay for fellowship time after the 11:30 service, we encourage you to bring a sack lunch to enjoy; there will be no dinner served prior to the 7:00 service. Holy Week / Week of Passion Services Palm Sunday is April 9. Regular worship services will include a traditional processional with palms and The Passion Narrative read from the Gospel of Matthew. Maundy Thursday will be celebrated on April 13 at a traditional service at 11:30 and a Seder Meal at 6:30. Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services. Good Friday services will be held on April 14 at 11:30 and 7:00. Both services will be a Tenebrae service (a service of darkness) and will include Holy Communion. Easter Sunday is on April 16. A sunrise service will be held at 6:30 AM. Other services will be at 8:15 and 10:45.

10 Life-Lines Seder Meal and Service Page 10 We will celebrate Maundy Thursday with a Seder Meal at 6:30 PM on April 13. Please plan to join us to experience this traditional Jewish Passover ceremony. The Seder is followed by a full dinner; we will conclude the evening by celebrating Holy Communion. We ask you to reserve a space we don t want anyone to go home hungry! A donation is requested to cover costs (suggested $5 per person/$20 per family). Scholarships are available. To RSVP, please indicate on your Connection Card on Sunday morning or contact the church office. We are seeking volunteers, as the evening events take a lot of coordination. Please talk with Felicia Wachsmann, Diane Smith, or Deb Grunska if you can help with any of the following: Table host (setting up/decorating a table for the Seder and the dinner) Event set-up on Thursday afternoon, April 13 Food preparation for the dinner Event tear down/clean-up (kitchen and sanctuary) immediately following event.

11 Volume No Page 11 Easter Flowers Please help us beautify our sanctuary on Easter morning by purchasing an Easter plant (lilies, hyacinths, tulips). Cards will be placed in the church bulletin and in the Welcome Center in March and April. If you would like to purchase a plant, please fill out the card and place it in the usher s baskets on the way out of the sanctuary on Sunday mornings or contact the church office. The cost per plant is $7.00 each. The deadline to order is Palm Sunday, April 9. Make sure you take your plant home after the late service on April 16! If you have any questions, please contact the church office, Jennifer Rosas, or David Ladolcetta. Country Gospel Service Save the Date! The band from Shiner, TX will be coming to LOLLC on March 26 to perform the entire service in the style of Country Gospel. This same band has also done the Polka service the last couple years. They also do a Country Gospel service that sounds wonderful so we asked them to join us for that style of service. They will be here during the late service on March 26. We plan to have a fellowship time after that service. We hope you ll be able to join us.

12 Life-Lines Page 12 Dear Family & Friends in Christ, The concept of waiting does not suit any of us on any level since our culture expects things immediately (aka instant gratification). Each of us are hardwired to be constant in our thinking and our actions which means that seldom do any of us stop to rest outside of our bedtime or if-god forbid-an illness knocks us down for the count. Since moving to Texas back in 2012, I have become more in tuned to the varied differences between cultures and even individuals when it comes to time management. There are two constants that I have witnessed from living, traveling and collaborating with people across the USA and abroad: 1) Time is honored and treasured; 2) There is no such thing as the perfect time for any person, reason or thing! No matter when or by what method I choose to convey information to anyone, it is never the perfect time I waited too long or I sent it too early or I used the wrong apparatus in which to spread the news. Right this minute you are reading the Lifelines Newsletter so this is how you are receiving your information but as I pointed out, not everyone reads this just as maybe you never read the bulletin or the news blast that comes out every Thursday afternoon. Regardless of which source you glom information, there is an expectation (innate or otherwise) that we share our knowledge with others. During this Lenten season, please make sure to share the Good News of the grace & love of Jesus Christ with EVERYONE! Share a smile, a handshake, a hug and if possible, please share your time. There is no perfect way or perfect time to share our faith, but pay attention to how both you and the person you connect with feel after you at least tried it. I look forward to sharing our stories and together we can celebrate the Holy Spirit at work in and through us on our amazing faith journey! Grace & peace, Michael Odegaard Minister of Youth, Lord of Life Lutheran Church Youth Event: Fun Day at the Park! The youth in grades 6-12 had a great time at their first adventure destination to Robinson Playground Park where they participated in an outside Bible devotional and also played some awesome games. Thanks to everyone that joined in the fun! Hope to see you on our next adventure!!
