Sunday, September 9th, at 9:30 am For the past several years, Lord of Life has been using the FaithWeaver Sunday school curriculum. The Education Committee decided it was time to shake things up and try something new. Some research was done and presented to the Education Committee, which chose One Room Sunday School. We are going with a one/two room approach. A plan has been put in place for the fall to Christmas time period. On the first Sunday of the month we will have a big opening in the sanctuary with Pastor Alan and David Pencil. This opening will last 10 to 15 minutes. The other Sundays, we will have a small opening in the classroom with the piano using the same format as done in previous years. Following the opening, all the pre-school through 5 th grade youth will be together for Sunday school. There will be two teachers working together. Each rotation will be based on a theme and then each week will be a different activity. The first theme is about Moses and will last five weeks long. Each week will have a different story about Moses and activity. The second theme will be about God s people and again each will have a different story about God s people and activity. When we get to activities that won t work for the different age groups, we will separate into two rooms (the adjoining rooms), and the preschoolers will head back to the nursery. We hope that by combining the elementary youth for Sunday school it will provide the kind of community environment that we were unable to achieve when classrooms had low weekly attendance. We hope that everyone finds this new curriculum as exciting as we do!! Middle and High School Although the general format of Sunday School will remain the same for our Middle and High School students, they, along with the adults are encouraged to participate in the monthly Opening on the first Sunday of each month in the Sanctuary. Adult Sunday School Offerings, both occurring during the 9:30am Sunday School Hour Marge Robison will continue to lead the discussion on the ELCA s Statement on Health Care in the sanctuary through September. In October, she will embark on a study of Grace. Concurrently, Pastor Alan will lead a study during September and October, titled, Making Sense of Scripture. It is based on a book by the same name, authored by Dr. David Lose. Lose is a graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and Princeton Theological Seminary. Since 2000 he has taught biblical preaching at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Those who attend the class, which will meet in the Administrative Building, are required to purchase the 80 pp. book at the price of $ Please make your check out to Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Peace, Alan J. Watt Interim Pastor

4 Page 4 Life-Lines Invitation for Call Committee Nominations The next step in the call process is the forming of the Call Committee. The Call Committee will have six voting members and two alternates (alternates will attend all meetings and will not have a vote but would be able to step in if one of the voting members has to withdraw). The Council would like to invite congregation members to nominate persons for the Call Committee. Members are free to nominate themselves or others. The Call Committee will need to represent the diversity of the entire congregation so it is possible that not everyone who is nominated will be asked to serve. Nominations for the Call Committee must be received by the Council no later than the September 13th Council meeting. The Council will make its recommendations for the Call Committee members from all the nominations received on the basis of the criteria noted below. The Council will bring these recommendations to a Special Congregational Meeting in September for approval by the congregation. Based on information from the Synod, the Call Committee should, as closely as possible, reflect the overall membership of Lord of Life including Committee members representing a cross-section of age groups, genders, lengths of membership, etc. The Synod also suggests including one Council member as well as someone who represents interests of the Youth. In addition, Call Committee members need to have similar qualifications as Council members such as being voting members of the congregation, regular worship attendees, regular givers, and participants in congregational ministries. Members who wish to be on the Call Committee need to demonstrate Christian maturity and be concerned for the welfare of the whole congregation rather than their own personal preferences. Call Committee members will need to work well with others and be able to commit the time needed during the call process. If you have any question please feel free to contact any of the Council members: Mike Brown, Dick Fink, Chuck Neeley, Brenda Searcy, Deb Grunska, Marge Kretschmar, Courtney Warnsman, Gary Parsons, Diane Smith, and Pastor Alan. CHOIR AND BELLS REHEARSALS Beginning on September 5th, the Hand-Bell Choir and Adult Choir will begin rehearsals for their Fall Season. Feel free to drop in if you are interested in joining! Wednesdays 6:45-7:45 Hand-Bell Choir Rehearsal 7:45-8:45 Adult Choir Rehearsal GLOBAL INITIATIVES Through the benevolence we pay to the ELCA we are supporting these global initiatives. A link is now available on the For Members page of our website, so you can keep up-to-date on what the ELCA is doing to reach the world for Christ. BOOK CLUB Beginning September 11th and continuing for the next five or six weeks, we will be discussing The Orthodox Heretic and Other Impossible Tales by Peter Rollins. The group meets at 7:15 p.m. in the conference room of the LOL office on Tuesdays for about an hour. Newcomers are welcome. Here is a quote from the author in his introduction:..the more one speaks of one's own journey, the more universal the message can become. So I find myself compelled to end with a prayer of sorts, one in which I express my hope that these tiny tales will become more than mere words on a page to you the reader, perhaps becoming worthy of the title parable. But, at the end of the day, that is for you to decide.
