In February s Life Lines, I encouraged us to refrain from the usual giving up something for Lent and instead to engage in taking something on. I discovered the following on The Loyola Press. A Jesuit Ministry website under Lent: Resources for your Lenten journey: A note a day Each day of Lent, through prayer, a name surfaces of a person who has had an impact on my life in some way. I then take the time to write a handwritten note to that person. I have been amazed at the people that have surfaced: from my 3rd grade teacher; to a cousin; to a priest; to a high school student who had written me a note after a presentation I gave at her school. I send the notes without the expectation of a response. Yet, I have received several s and notes stating how much it meant to the person. Life is too short we see that with Jesus but, we have the opportunity to share our thoughts with those who have made an impact (some don t even know it, until they receive the note). This embodies the idea of Lent: prayer praying for a specific person each day; fasting fasting from negative thoughts; and almsgiving sending a note with affirmations is a great gift to give. Suzanne, NY My Lenten jar I always have nice things that I d like to do, but never seem to make time to get to: write a letter to a friend, visit a lonely person, call a distant friend. At the beginning of Lent, I write down 40 plus tasks, one per little slip of paper, and toss them in a jar. Then, each morning of Lent, I pull one out and do the task written there. It teaches me that I like surprise and variety in my Lenten practices. For me, this is a simple way to concentrate on the disciplines of giving alms and doing good for others. Mark G., KS These are simply two examples of taking something on. Suffice it to say, they are not models of behavior that will change the world. They do not produce earth-shattering results nor will they be recorded in the annals of historic deeds. But, I believe they are examples of potential life-changing behaviors. The life that is changed is the life of the one who is performing them! Therein lies the purpose of the Lenten journey a life-changing experience. The way of the cross calls us to expend ourselves on behalf of others just as Jesus did throughout his ministry. I pray you will dare to take something on this Lent and watch your life (and you) change. In the name of Jesus, Pr. Skip

Not only was the weather gorgeous, but I had the opportunity to return to Camp Ebert with my daughter for our second Mother/Daughter retreat. My teenaged daughter and I arrived in Harper, Tx around 9pm after a typically long and grueling work and school week. We were greeted by the staff at Camp Ebert, given snacks and welcomed to our room. Saturday morning was filled with an awesome breakfast, bible study and craft time. After lunch, we got to go on a trail ride through the ranch and enjoy the beautiful hill country. The rest of the day was spent having fun with the other mothers and daughters, bible study, great food, horse grooming, games and s mores. On Sunday, we got to encourage each other on the ropes course and had church outside. We exchanged gifts made the night before and were sent home with our hearts, minds and bellies filled with God s love and a renewed connection between Mother and Daughter. I absolutely enjoyed the chance to spend some quality time with my daughter and encourage Mothers and Daughters to give it a try you won t regret a moment. Shari Lagerstrom On the Saturday evening preceding Easter, bonfires are lit atop as many as twenty-two specified hills flanking the Texas German town of Fredericksburg. At the appointed hour the church bells of the town toll, lights are extinguished, and the hilltops burst into flame. Elsewhere in the Hill Country, Easter Fires were reputedly once lit on heights such as the one at Kreutzberg, eight miles east of Boerne in Kendall County, but the Fredericksburg celebration is the only surviving one. In recent times the Easter Fires have become a tourist attraction, complete with a pageant at the fairgrounds, but the custom originally was part of the local German folk tradition. The fires, dating from the first Easter celebration in 1847, are almost as old as the town itself. According to local tradition, the custom originated when Comanche Indian scouts lit signal fires in the night to communicate with their chiefs, who were negotiating a treaty with German leader John O. Meusebach many miles to the north, beyond the Llano River. The scouts presumably were informing their chiefs concerning the movements of the town's inhabitants. According to this tradition, the signal fires terrified some German children in Fredericksburg, prompting one imaginative mother to tell her children that the Easter Rabbit and his helpers had lit the fires to cook eggs before decorating and distributing them among the children on Easter morning. Many Fredericksburgers, therefore, believe the Easter Fires are an indigenous custom linked to the founding of their town. In reality, the Easter Fires have a much more ancient history. The people of northwestern Germany, especially in the provinces of Westphalia and Lower Saxony, practice an identical custom of lighting Easter-eve fires on specified hills. The practice originated in pre-christian times as part of a spring festival and, along with the rabbit and egg, represents pagan customs that passed intact into Teutonic Christianity. The German provinces where Easter Fires occur contributed almost half of the settlers who came to the Texas Hill Country. The most likely agents of diffusion were Hanoverians, one of the two largest groups in early Fredericksburg. A second point, equally damaging to the signal-fire story, is that the Meusebach-Comanche negotiations (see MEUSEBACH-COMANCHE TREATY) occurred on March 1 and 2, 1847, while Easter eve in that year fell on April 3. Perhaps these two major events in Fredericksburg's first spring later merged in the popular mind, or possibly the initial Easter Fires frightened German children from Hesse or some other southern province where the custom was unknown. In any case, the Old World origin of the fires is incontestable. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Francis Edward Abernethy and Dan Beaty, eds., The Folklore of Texan Cultures (Austin: Encino, 1974). Irene M. 5 KINDRED SISTERS Kindred Sisters had their February meeting on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Koinonia Cafe at LOLLC. We had a good attendance, and after devotions, we enjoyed a jewelry-making presentation by Barbara Ferriola. Barbara had brought lots of different kits, so we were able to choose which kit that each one of us would make (with Barbara's help)! It was fun to see everyone's completed project! Thank you so much, Barbara, for your presentation, and your help with some of the intricate work! We also discussed our plans for our March meeting, as we are making final plans and getting the final needed articles for assembling the Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. What a wonderful project for our organization to be involved with! We enjoyed fellowship as we had our sack lunch, and Carol Bender, our hostess for February, provided us with a delicious Valentine-themed dessert selection. Thank you, Carol! Our March meeting is Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the Koinonia Cafe at LOLLC. All of the needed articles are ready, so we will be assembling the Personal Care Kits for Lutheran World Relief. We all share in the assembly project, and it goes smoothly! It is exciting to think of where these kits may go, and what a comfort they will be to someone in difficult circumstances. Thanks to everyone for their generous donations! 8 Page 6 Life-Lines SCOUT SUNDAY On Sunday, February 8, we celebrated Scout Sunday by recognizing some of our Cub Scouts from Packs 150, 1501, and We had about 15 scouts and their families join us this year! Lord of Life is the Charter Organization for three Cub Scout packs. It started out as one pack - Pack 150, and as it grew, Packs 1501 and 1502 were formed. Pack 150 is centered around Rutledge Elementary and is about 35 scouts. The Packs use the LOL facility for their monthly meetings and as a great location for their Pinewood Derbys! Pack 1501 is based around Reagan Elementary. It has 8 dens and 54 scouts total. Pack 1502 is centered around Cox Elementary and has 31 scouts in 5 dens. After the service, we enjoyed getting to know some of our scouts while we feasted on hot dogs, chips, cookies and a drink. What a beautiful day it was!! Huge Thank You to Nick & Barb Ferriola for getting all the food and tables ready to love and support our Scouts!!

9 Page 9 DID YOU KNOW???? Did you know that we have a number of different groups/organizations that meet at our church on a weekly to monthly basis? We do! TIFA and KDO are two we d like to highlight this month! One out of every 100 adults is incarcerated in the United States. Texas has the fifth highest incarceration rate in the U.S. Those are scary statistics for any parent of a child today. Though it is not until we are faced with the reality of our child (no matter their age) being put into a county jail or worse the Texas Department Criminal Justice (TDJC), do we sit up and take notice. It s good to know there s help and support available for parents, wives, children or other family members that might find themselves facing a loved one behind the walls. The Texas Inmate Families Association (TIFA) is a non-profit support group for the families that have someone incarcerated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Our mission is to break the cycle of crime by strengthening families through support, education, and advocacy. We currently serve over 700 members, 550 inmates and 18 chapters throughout the state of Texas. We support families by guiding them through the incarceration process. Through our state-wide chapter meetings, we educate family members and answer questions that they may have when interacting with TDCJ personnel. TIFA has become influential in working with TDCJ to change many visitation rules. We meet with TDCJ representatives on a quarterly basis to discuss concerns and issues within the visitation process and conditions within the prisons. TDCJ evaluates all TIFA s requests and recommendations. During Texas Legislature sessions, like this year, TIFA members testify before the Corrections and Criminal Justice, and Criminal Jurisprudence committees on proposed bills. TIFA works year-round to establish relationships and educate committee chairman and their staff on TIFA s position. The advocacy and knowledge of TIFA members on proposed bills is acknowledged and respected by the committees. The power of change comes in numbers. TIFA is a well-respected and sought out voice for families and inmates alike. Lord of Life Lutheran Church is a host site for the North Austin chapter meetings. We invite you to join us to educate yourself on the issues and concerns families have with a loved one incarcerated. Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Preschool Enrichment Program LOL Kid s Day Out Now Enrolling for Fall Lord of Life Hosts a part-time preschool for children ages 2-5yrs. Each week they participate in Spanish class, music and Chapel with Pastor Skip. Currently we are full through May but are enrolling for fall classes that begin on September 1 st. At that time classes will be held Monday through Thursday 9:00-1:30. Alyson at apirotina@gmail.com or Visit for more information. SCOUTS PINEWOOD DERBY

10 Page 10 February Council Highlights Lord of Life Kids Day Out Program The Lord of Life Kids Day Out program continues to be a success; in fact, this year they are at full attendance! The playscape in the front, and some surrounding ground, will be fenced in to make it safer for kids who want to play outside. The work will be done by Parker Higginbotham as his Eagle Scout project. New Members Jennifer and Kira Niedert were received into membership this past month. Welcome, Jennifer and Kira! Constitution Many changes are being made to the Constitution. Some of the changes are required by the Synod, but there are a number of important changes that will affect the way Church Council and the ministry teams operate. An informational meeting will be held on March 8 after late service, to present the changes and answer questions. (No votes will be taken or amendments made.) Following that will be a Congregational Meeting to vote on the new constitution. If the new constitution passes, it will be sent to the Synod for review, and then adopted. There will then be another Congregational Meeting to elect members of Church Council, using either the old method or the new method, depending on the outcome of the vote. Thanks to the Constitution Committee - Courtney Warnsman, Deb Grunska, Rex Schroeder, Marge Kretschmar, and Dick Fink - for all the hard work they did editing the Constitution! Emmanuel Bible School Pastor Noah sent Council members an asking for financial support and prayers for his mission to start Bible schools in India. Council voted to donate $1000, plus match congregational donations up to an additional $500. CROP Walk This year s CROP Walk will be on April 19. Please support this event by donating to a walker or by walking yourself! Synod Assembly This year s Synod Assembly will be from May 1 to May 3 in McAllen, TX. Lord of Life Lutheran Church is allowed to send two lay members (a man and a woman) and a youth member to the Assembly. If you are interested in attending, please contact a Council member or Pastor Skip. Youth Minister We are still actively seeking to find a Youth Minister for the congregation s youth. If you know of a place to announce the position, or if you know someone who might be interested in the position, please contact a Council member. If you would like more information on any of these items, or on any other church matters, please contact a member of Council. Thank you for your prayers and your involvement in Lord of Life.
