3 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost July 6 th & 7 th, 2013 Our Order of Worship Worship theme: Today we focus our attention again on God s Holy Ministry of the Word. Last week s focused our minds on the unworthiness the servants were in regard to their calling. This week s focus is a reflection on the Holy Ministry and the people the servants serve. Liturgy: Divine Service I (CWS Insert pg 10) Opening Hymn: 542 Dear Lord, to Your True Servants Give First Lesson: Exodus 19:2-8a 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites. 7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak. 8 The people all responded together, We will do everything the LORD has said. Psalm of the Day: Psalm 100 (pg. 104 in red hymnal) Second Lesson: Romans 5: You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how 2

4 much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! 10 For if, when we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. Verse of the Day: Alleluia. May your priests be clothed with righteousness; may your saints sing for joy. Alleluia. Stand Gospel Lesson: Matthew 9:35-10:8 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. 5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message: The kingdom of heaven is near. 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Nicene s Creed (pg 17 in CWS insert) Be Seated Hymn of the Day: 576 Spread, Oh, Spread the Mighty Word 3

5 Sermon: Compassionate Savior, Compassionate Church Offering Please sign our Friendship Register Stand Prayer of the Church The Sacrament Communion Hymn: 313 Jesus Christ, our Blessed Savior Prayers and Blessing (CWS insert pg 25) Closing Hymn: 346 In You Is Gladness ******************************************************* Gather, Grow, and Go with the Gospel to Glorify God St. John Lutheran Church exists as part of the Holy Christian Church on earth. We engage in the continuing development of disciples of Jesus Christ by gathering for worship and fellowship in order to grow in faith and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. By God s grace we proclaim Christ and His Word with our lips and lives. As Christians, we realize that it is only through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments one can be equipped for discipleship and bringing glory to God. As part of the body of Christ, we keep worship, personal Bible study, and Christian education as essential elements of our congregational life. We encourage our members and all people to grow in their faith and knowledge of Christ and His will for us. Here at St. John, we are welcoming to our community and strive to share God s plan of grace with them. St. John is known as a visible example of God s Love for all people. If you have any questions about St. John, or would like to become a member of St. John, please talk with Pastor Vik 4

7 Our Country When I see the flag blowing in the breeze, I get a weak feeling in my knees I think of all this country s gone through For that red, white, and blue All the wars and conflicts The loss of life and limbs The pain and the strife How proud they were to honor that flag, Now there are those who want to tear it down and stomp it into the ground They want all the goodness this land can give, with open hand and hate filled hearts Don t you wonder where did it all start, for God and country? I hope this will always be This is our country and may it always be free --Arlene Oakley 6
