Social Justice Corner Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our country and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. From the Conference of Catholic Bishops. 2 The Thirtieth in Ordinary Time Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento Question: I am having a difficult time making a choice on who to vote when there isn t a single candidate that clearly comes out as the best candidate for me. I m so confused. What do I do in this case? Answer: Second Series of Two There are four permanent principles of the Church s social doctrine that are considered primary and fundament parameters of reference. These principles can aid us in evaluating the many issues that we face as a nation. These principles provide a moral framework for Catholic engagement in advancing what we have called a consistent ethic of life. This ethic does not treat all issues as morally equivalent nor does it reduce Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental moral obligation to respect the dignity of every person as a child of God. This includes, therefore, all issues affecting human life and dignity such as racism, poverty, hunger, employment, education, housing, and health care. The permanent principles are: (1) the dignity of the human person; (2) the common good; (3) subsidiarity, and (4) solidarity. The Church asks us Catholic voters to use these principles to examine candidates positions on issues affecting human life and dignity as well as issues of justice and peace while we examine the candidate s integrity, basic philosophy, and performance. We also need to be careful not to become single-issue voters. A candidate s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter s support. However, if a candidate s position on a particularly issue promotes an intrinsically evil act, such as legal abortion, redefining marriage in a way that denies its essential meaning, or racist behavior, a voter may legitimately disqualify a candidate from receiving support. Below is a brief explanation of these four permanent principles of the Church s social doctrine that informs our conscience. The Dignity of the Human Person. The sanctity of human life must always be maintained. Direct attacks on innocent persons are never morally acceptable, at any stage or in any condition. Assault against the dignity of the human person includes but not limited to abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide, human cloning, in vitro fertilization, the destruction of human embryos for research, unjust war, genocide, racism, and human trafficking. Subsidiarity. Every person and association has a right and a duty to participate actively in shaping society and to promote the well-being of all, especially the poor and the vulnerable. For that matter, larger institutions, like the government, should not interfere with smaller or local institution. However, when the more local institutions cannot adequately protect human dignity, meet human needs and advance the common good, larger institutions have the responsibility to help. The family is an example of a smaller institution. The family based on marriage between man and a woman is the first and fundamental unit of society and is a sanctuary for the creation and nurturing of children. It should be defended and strengthened, not redefined, undermined, or further distorted. Parents have the right and responsibility to care for their children, including the right to choose their children s education. The Common Good. When human rights are protected and basic responsibilities are met, human dignity is respected and the common good is fostered. Every human being has a right to life, the fundamental right that makes all other rights possible, and a right to access those things required for human decency food and shelter, education and employment, health care and housing, freedom of religion and family life. The right to exercise religions freedom publicly and privately by individuals and institutions along with freedom of conscience need to be constantly defended. In a fundamental way, the right to free expression of religious beliefs protects all other rights. The principle of the common good includes also respecting the dignity of work and protecting the rights of workers, and care for God s creation. Solidarity. This principle recognizes that we are one human family, regardless of race, ideology, ethnic or economic background. This principle calls us to welcome the stranger among us, including the immigrants seeking work, to promote peace and pursue justice for all. In reference to solidarity, a special emphasis must be given to the Church s preferential option for the poor. While the common good embraces all, those who are weak, vulnerable, and most in need deserve preferential concern. These four principles reflect fundamental ethical principles that are common to all people. In light of these principles, the Church calls us to set our eyes more on moral principles than on the latest polls; the needs of the weak than on benefits for the strong; on the pursuit of the common good than on the demands of the narrow interests. With these four principles may the Holy Spirit guide each one of us according to the dictates of our informed conscience.
3 Oct. 23, 2016 Fr. Thuc celebrated our St. Francis of Assisi mass on Oct. 4. During his homily he asked the students about listening and how to do it. They told him they had to use their ears and be focused and open and quiet to hear. He emphasized how St. Francis was a saint of service to the poor and to animals and to all of creation. The third and sixth graders helped to proclaim readings and lead prayers during the mass. For information, call Marie McCarthy or PEACEMAKERS In this column we have shared lives of some well-known peacemakers and saints, as well as little-known local people whom we might consider saints/peacemakers. In his book, My Life with the Saints, Fr. James Martin, S.J. helps define what a saint is, none of us are meant to be Therese of Lisieux or Pope John XXIII, but we are meant to be ourselves. We are meant to allow God to work in and through our own individuality, our own humanity. As St. Thomas Aquinas said, grace builds nature. So, we all have the capacity to be saints. It is not a farout expectation. Moreover, Fr. Martin found companions among the saints. They were friends I could turn to when I needed a helping hand. While at Mass, Fr. Martin heard a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the saints, You renew the Church In every age by raising up men and women outstanding in their holiness, living witnesses of your unchanging love. They inspire us by their heroic lives, and help us by their constant prayers to be the living sign of your saving power. Many saints have struggled with the same human foibles as we have and knowing this, encourages us to carry on. Stories of saints can be found in our library in the rectory conference room.
