SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER The story of the mustard seed is essentially the story of Social Justice: the right of every human person to be treated with dignity and equality. Social Justice could be seen as an impossible task, yet in starting small, our tiny seeds can leads to societal change. The fruit of Social Justice is advocacy. Like the mustard seed, each one of us can do our own part. Filled by faith and God s grace, change begins to happen. What does advocacy look like? How does one start to be an advocate? Consider an immersion experience in order to expose yourself of the reality of the plight of the poor. This could be working in a local soup kitchen in feeding the hungry in our city or preparing and sharing a meal at Casa de Clara, a Catholic Worker home in San Jose for women and children who are safely sheltered there until they become self-sufficient, or go on an immersion trip within the USA or Mexico or beyond to share life with, and assist those living in poverty. Advocacy stems from this experience in speaking out for societal change. What seeds of faith and action am I called to do that will produce fruit that will? 2 Eleventh in Ordinary Time My Fellow Pilgrims, The three readings we have in today s liturgy encourage us to have faith that all good things will happen for us in God s time so long as we act as His children. The first reading from Ezekiel is written from and to the exiles in Babylon after the fall of Judah, the southern Jewish kingdom. The northern kingdom, Israel, had long since been destroyed so the current exiles must be wondering why they are in this predicament. Why has their God abandoned them in their affliction? How often have we doubted like them the love of our Heavenly Father when we are going through hard times? In the second reading Paul tells his people that we are all exiles because we are away from our true home, Heaven, while on this earth. Paul suffered much while preaching Christ s love. His faith allows him to discount his imprisonments, beatings, and exiles because he knows where his true home is. He encourages his disciples to adopt the same attitude in order to enjoy eternal bliss. This is his same message to all of us today. Then there is Christ teaching the two seed parables. In the first the, the sower scatters seeds of faith. That s what we are supposed to do. God then takes care of the rest. Our job is to spread the gospel through love of one another and especially, the less fortunate. In May we did that rather dramatically in the Catholic Charities collection that so far has raised over $9,000 to help feed, clothe and house our poorer brothers and sisters. The campaign continues through the end of June. Hopefully, we will outdo last year s $12,500 gifts. Our actions speak even louder to our brothers and sisters when we come from an attitude of love and acceptance for them. It is in the smallest of our loving actions like the mustard seed that God will create the greatest results like the great mustard plant. Over Memorial Day weekend I was privileged to see God s love in action. I worked a Kairos retreat for four days with the prisoners in the California Medical Facility at Vacaville State Penitentiary. This non-denominational Christian ministry exists in over 400 prisons throughout the world. Run by laypeople, its sole purpose is to bring to prisoners the message that Christ totally loves them just as they are. We do this by showing them our brotherly love by treating them with the respect they deserve as God s children. By our actions and talks we just try to let them know that opening their hearts to the healing power of the Holy Spirit they will begin to see they are wonderful miracles of creation who are loved unconditionally. It is awesome and humbling to see these hardened men, many of whom will never get out of prison, cry when they begin to believe in their own self-worth and that they are loved. See for yourself.
