Psalm 90 At the dawn of creation, God made man the steward of his handiwork and charged him to cultivate and protect it. Human labor is part of that creation and continues God s creative work. Work, in its many forms, expresses the dignity of being created in the image of God. Thus, it is said that work is sacred. Pope Francis O God, Creator of the world, You fashioned us as your own, your handiwork of love. Into our hands you gave us the care of every living thing. Give us good and honest work to do and rest at each day s end. Let a just and fair day s wage be paid for a good day s work well done. 2 The Twenty-Third in Ordinary Time My Dear Friends in Jesus. Today we have three readings that at first glance seem too demanding for us to accept. On further reflection upon them, however, and, when taken in the context of Jesus over all command to love one another, the readings tell us something quite different from what our first impressions may give. Let us begin with the Gospel message that says we must hate our families if we wish to follow Jesus. The first problem is the translation of the original Greek word used by Luke. It does not mean to literally hate. Rather it means to love less. The similar message in Matthew s Gospel captures the more exact meaning. It says, whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. The point here is not that we must hate anyone but rather that we must love God more than anyone or thing in this life if we are to truly be his disciples. And the way Jesus tells us we love God is by loving one another, even our enemies. Today especially in the upcoming election, we must remember that our faith teaches us that love is what is expected of us. Pope Francis recognized this fact when he named 2016 the year of mercy. The task before us as Christians is not an easy one. In fact, it is impossible for us to love Jesus more than our families, not to mention love our enemies at all, if we try to do this under our own power. Fortunately, we do not have to rely on ourselves to accomplish this as the other readings point out. The Book of Wisdom emphasizes that it is only through the gift of Divine wisdom that we can come to comprehend and implement God s will in our own lives. In fact we cannot even know God s will for us unless He bestows His wisdom on us. As Christians it is easy for us to equate Divine wisdom with the Holy Spirit but the Jewish audience to whom this book was written had no concept of the Holy Spirit. In fact, in those days the chosen people were just beginning to believe in the afterlife, a belief not all Jews shared even in Jesus day. So it is very important to realize that this message is meant to apply to how we implement God s will here on earth. And we do this today by placing Christ first in our affections with the help of the Holy Spirit so we should not be discouraged when we fail at times. The second reading is from the shortest New Testament book and it is a letter from Paul to Philemon, the owner of a runaway slave, Onesimus, a supporter of Paul. Slaves in those days had no rights at all and could be executed by their owners with impunity. Scholars tell us that when Onesimus fled he probably stole money or supplies from his master so Paul is really asking Philemon for a big favor when he asks him to free him and to send him back to Paul on his own. Note that Paul does not command. He requests. Also note that Onesimus is willing to go back to face the music because he is a true disciple of Jesus. We do not know the final outcome of this request but we do know that there was a bishop named Onesimus who guided the early community shortly after Paul s death so it is reasonable to speculate that Philemon followed Paul s advice, loved his slave and sent him back to do God s will. Perhaps there is a lesson of generosity here for us in our own interactions with the people in our lives in order that we may truly act in what is our truly our best interest as children of a loving Heavenly Father. We do not have to travel to India to feed the homeless; they are right here in the United States. In fact, we only have to go as far as our families to give love. The opportunities are all around us. This coming week in Rome, Mother Teresa will be canonized. She was one of the earliest persons to become Blessed after she died. We all know what she has done in service to others all her life. What a beautiful example of love she has been. When speaking to a journalist in Philadelphia, she again spoke of the suffering around us. There are thousands of people in Philadelphia who are forgotten, unwanted. Hungry for love. We pass them by. Love them. Loneliness is the greatest poverty. Let the words of Mother Teresa stay with you this day... and every day.
