NEW MEMBERS ALWAYS WELCOME. Adoration after the Mass and Benediction at 6:30 pm. NA Meeting tonight. Continental Breakfast after 9 am Mass. Special Collection this weekend is for World Missions Social Justice CORNER Pope Francis touched the hearts and consciences of millions of people on his recent visit to America. He came on a Mission of Love to be with us, in his humble, genuine way, as Christ himself would - listening, challenging, encouraging, healing, forgiving, and asking for forgiveness. Here are some of Pope Francis messages: As the son of an immigrant family, I am happy to be a guest of this country. Together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics want a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, one that safeguards individual rights and respects every form of unjust discrimination but also respects the deeply held religious beliefs of citizens and the moral and ethical obligations that flow from them. A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did; when it fosters a culture which enables people to dream of full rights for all their brothers and sisters as Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice as the cause of the oppressed as Dorothy Day did by her tireless work; the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows peace in a contemplative style of Thomas Merton. Our response must be one of hope and healing, of peace and justice in resolving many geopolitical and economic crises. We must move forward together, as one, in a renewed sense of fraternity and solidarity, cooperating genuinely for the common good. To Congress Only love and compassion conquer hate and violence. At 9/11 Memorial The joy of the Gospel is something to be experienced, known and lived only by giving it away, by giving ourselves away. Whenever a hand reaches out to do good or to show the love of Christ, to dry a tear or bring comfort to the lonely, to show the way to one who is lost or to console a broken heart, to help the fallen or to teach those thirsting for truth, to forgive or to offer a new start in God know that the Pope is at your side and supports you. To Bishops Pray for me, and if any of you are not a believer, I ask you to wish me well. To UN. 2 Twenty Eighth in Ordinary Time My Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today s readings give us very clear directions on what it means to be a Christian. But as with most things we must be careful to apply our own minds and understandings to the words we have just heard so that we do not act foolishly or unlovingly to any one, including the one person we are most apt to ignore ourselves. In the first reading from Wisdom Solomon, the wisest and riches Jewish king who built the beautiful temple in Jerusalem at great cost speaks. He says that, because he sought wisdom above all things, he has been blessed many times over with the lesser goods of gold and silver. The Holy Spirit personifies wisdom in scripture so the message here is very clear seek first the things of the Spirit and all else will follow in due course. In the Hebrews reading, Paul has a similar message. He teaches that the Word of God, Jesus Christ, is alive and very active in our daily lives. So Paul tells us that the power of the Word, Christ, sees into our very hearts. Nothing is hidden from Him, will judge us in the end when we come before His throne. He will hold us accountable for how we behave here in this temporary existence. Did we show love or did we concentrate on the pursuit of worldly goods and pleasure? There is simply no escaping our accountability. And then there is the gospel message of the rich young man who goes away saddened when Jesus tells him that if he wishes to have it all he should give away all his possessions and follow Jesus. But he is too attached to his possessions. It is easy for us to see the young man did not act wisely but it is important to see all the details in this story to apply it properly to our own lives. The young man admires Jesus. He calls him Good teacher and has accepted his teachings. And kept the commandments. But he sought more because he had a certain internal emptiness. Jesus knew this and loved him. He invites him to follow Him by living a life of poverty. Now this is a shocking invitation to his audience. People of this time saw earthly wealth as a sign of God s special favor and this suggestion confuses even his own disciples. Peter even asks how anyone can be saved if this is true. Jesus replies that it is impossible for humans to save themselves, but that God can and will if they follow His will. And when the very human Peter dares to ask if he and the other disciples will be rewarded for giving up what little they possessed, Jesus assures him they will. Peter is only asking the same question we all want answered. If we follow Jesus command to love will we be saved? And Peter receives the same answer we all receive. Today, we all know people who have answered Jesus call, some rather dramatically. Our consecrated religious and priests have obviously said yes to Jesus. So too have our teachers and the mothers and fathers who sacrifice for their children, as well as our generous benefactors who provide for the less fortunate, all have answered the call of Jesus to follow him. We do not know what happened to the young man who went away sad. Given Jesus love, it seems he was not lost but just left a little emptier than he could have been. Should we not ask ourselves if we too have answered Jesus call or will we be content to stay a little emptier like the young man. Our own hearts will give us the answer. God bless us all. Dc. Brian McKenna

4 Dear young friends, in a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, where many preach the importance of enjoying the moment, I ask you, instead, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rise against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love. - Pope Francis, Message for the 30th World Youth Day. The RISE! 2015 Conference is a free two-day event for Bay Area teens, young adults as well as parents, catechists and teachers, that will take place on the 13th/14th of November, It consists of a series of talks by keynote speakers (Matt Fradd and Jackie Francois), participation in the Holy Mass, opportunity for Confession, fellowship, and fun! Following the invitation of our Holy Father, the purpose of RISE! 2015 is to instruct and encourage the youth to rediscover the beauty of the human vocation to love, providing them the arguments they need to rise against the widespread tendency to reduce love to something banal, reducing it to its sexual aspect alone, deprived of its essential characteristics of beauty, communion, fidelity and responsibility and for the adults to be aware of the dangers that their children are exposed to and how to prevent and act about them. Register today at Santa Clara County 2015 is a safe place for young people (12 through 20) who are affected by the drinking or drug abuse of a family member or friend. There are no dues or fees. The Heart to Heart Freedom Alateen group meets every Thursday evening here at Queen of Apostles School at 7:45 p.m. in room 7. Please call Jay or Venice at for more information. Grief Group The grief support group s next meeting will be 10/19 Please call Shirley if you have any questions or need to talk. The annual Oktoberfest Dinner that was started to honor Fr. Jim s efforts to help the unemployed will be held on, October 24. The tickets will be on sale after most of the masses. For those unable to attend, a donation would be most welcome. PEACEMAKERS Louise Benson, founder of Sacred Heart Community Services ( ) Louise Benson is an unsung hero in our Catholic community. As an older woman she began collecting food and clothing for the homeless and lower income families of San Jose. When people approached her home, she welcomed them, showed them her garage full of clothing and canned goods and said, The Lord is here. Her hero: St. Augustine After seeing what he overcame, I realized that, with God s strength, wisdom and compassion, I can do anything on earth. Best time of her life: Right now. Every moment that I m serving the Lord, I am happiest. I have never been more content or happy than I am now. I wish people 65 and older who are bored and watching TV would realize the strength that is available from God and then use that strength to do God s work. Let us try to emulate Louise in our daily life. YOUNG ADULT RETREAT We invite you to join faith-filled and faith-curious young adults from all over the Bay Area on the Pure Fire Retreat as we encounter God in everything, everybody, and everyday; Discover God s mercy and selflessness; and answer the call to service.
