Social Justice CORNER Be merciful just as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:36 Pope Francis has proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy which will open this Tuesday, December 8 th on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This marks the 50 th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. Pope Francis will open the Holy Door, the Door of Mercy, through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, we hear of God s generous gifts of mercy and forgiveness. Jesus read the hearts of those he encountered-sinners, the poor, the marginalized, the sick and sufferingand responded to their deepest needs with mercy and compassion. In the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the father with two sons, God s mercy is seen to overcome everything, filling the heart with love and bringing consolation through pardon. So what does this year of mercy mean for us? God invites you and me to be freed from our sin, to ask for pardon, to be healed and made whole, at peace before Him. Because mercy has been so generously shown to us, we are called to extend mercy, forgiveness, and compassion to others, especially in our own broken relationships. How hard it can be to forgive! Yet pardon brings peace of heart. To let go of anger and revenge are necessary conditions to living joyfully. Peter asks, How many times is it necessary to forgive? Jesus replies, I do not say seven times, but seventy times seven times. You need to forgive your brother and sister from your heart. We are also called to reach out to those on the fringes of society, those who are often denied dignity. We can show warmth and friendship and work for justice on their behalf. Dear Lord, during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, help us act upon these corporal and spiritual works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, counsel the doubtful, comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill. As the Father is merciful, so must we be merciful. 2 Second of Advent Dear Parishioners, Families and Friends, This coming Tuesday, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door at St. Peter s Square to begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The door of a church is significant, as Christ proclaimed: I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture (John 10: 9). It is through Jesus Christ that we find God s mercy in loving and forgiving. Bishop Patrick J. McGrath has established three Holy Doors in the Diocese of San Jose. They are at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph, San Jose; the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, San Jose; and the church of Our Lady of Peace, Santa Clara. We are invited to celebrate and live the Year of Mercy. To celebrate God s mercy, we gather together as a community of faith in prayers. During this Year of Mercy, from December 8, 2015 through November 20, 2016, the diocesan website shows: For those who are able: With a desire for true conversion, make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door, either in Rome or at the local Cathedral or other churches designated by the local bishop once those doors are opened. Having entered through the Holy Door, celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist or Reconciliation. Within those two sacraments, make a profession of faith and pray for the Holy Father and for his intentions for the good of the Church and of the entire world. For those who are sick and unable to visit the Holy Door: Live your illness as a way to be close to Jesus who also suffered in his earthly life. Receive Communion, or participate in the Eucharist or community prayer, even by televised media. For those in prison: Pray in the chapel of your prison, and let God, through your prayer, transform the bars of your cell into a kind of Holy Door, because the mercy of God is able to transform hearts and is also able to transform bars into an experience of freedom (Pope Francis). For more information: http;// s mercy flows from the Sacraments to the services. To live it as some concrete ways to respond to God s mercy, we go out to do corporal works of mercy in feeding the hungry; giving drink to the thirsty; clothing the naked; sheltering the homeless; burying the dead; forgiving the offenses; praying for one another the living and the dead, and the list goes on and on. Whenever we celebrate and respond to God s mercy by doing one of these acts, we will receive the Jubilee Indulgence for ourselves or for the deceased. May we take this opportunity to deepen our relationship with God and with one another through mercy! Fr. Thuc

Holy Day of Obligation Feast of The Immaculate Conception Masses will be on Dec. 7 the vigil at 5pm, The day of, Dec. 8 at 6:30, 9:30am & 7pm PEACEMAKERS All I did was show up. That is how Lisa Blanchard characterizes her involvement in the Grateful Garment Project. Most would disagree, however. Lisa, singlehandedly, started the organization after writing a paper for her college class. She had found out that victims of sexual assault, after being seen by the doctor, had to leave their clothes behind for testing and had to leave the hospital in a thin hospital gown. How demoralizing and how dehumanized they must have felt. She began collecting clothes and toiletries for the victims. Lisa found a way to bring to the survivors human dignity. She found a way to bring them peace of mind after a terrible assault on their mind and body. She is one person, and she made a difference. When she walked into the SART hospital office where the exams took place and asked if her idea had merit, they gaped open-mouthed and said, There is absolutely a HUGE need. That was all she needed. Like the Energizer bunny, Lisa found friends to help and now her program is active in 20 California counties. That is just in three years time! What an example of Where there is a need, fill it! As St. James, said, Be doers of the word, not hearers only. lisa@gratefulgarment.org Brought to you by the Social Justice Committee SVdP 2015 Thanksgiving Dinner Drive THANK YOU to the parishioners of Queen of Apostles Church, the families at Queen of Apostles School, the Q of A Youth Group and to all the wonderful volunteers that helped to make this year's Thanksgiving Dinner Drive a great success! From the Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt to counting and sorting the food items, to assembling the bags and everything else in between, our community was hard at work to ensure that every family who called for help received everything they needed for a delicious and nutritious Thanksgiving dinner. Your monetary and food donations to this year s Thanksgiving Dinner Drive made it possible for us to serve 484 individual dinners to those less fortunate!
