That is the message of the readings today. Isaiah says, Here I am... send me! St. Paul echoes that with I am the least of the Apostles... but by the grace of God I am what I am...therefore we preach. And finally, in St. Luke, Jesus asks us to be fishers of men. We are asked to preach the gospel, sometimes with words, sometimes with action. This weekend we celebrate the Super Bowl. What a wild and exciting time for all football fans. There will be others at the festivities who will be working, but they may seem invisible. They are the young girls, young boys and women who will be exploited as prostitutes. Be aware of those needing our assistance. Intercession: For an end to human trafficking and all kinds of exploitation of our brothers and sisters; may we be vigilant to the signs of human exploitation all around us and act quickly to free those enslaved by the greed of others. Weekly Stewardship Report Collections for 1/31/2016 $ 8,822 Collections 7/1/15 to 1/31/16 $ 346,782 Budgeted 7/1/15 to 1/31/16 $ 352,443 Variance $ (5,661) Please be aware of the shortfall! To help keep the parish within its budget please prayerfully consider increasing your weekly contributions by $2-$3. Thank you for your continued support! WEEKLY ADA CAMPAIGN UPDATE The diocese has begun the Annual Diocesan Appeal. We have completed week two and have pledges for $ 46,110 thus far, 103 families pledging.. Fr. Thuc thanks everyone who has participated and those who are considering. All gifts are appreciated along with your prayers for a successful campaign. 2 Fifth in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, Families and Friends, In today s Gospel, the story tells us that Jesus sat down and taught the crowds from the boat that belonged to Simon. Afterward, Jesus instructed Simon: Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch (See Luke 5:1-11). Each one of us is so blessed that we can be a boat for the Lord and a hand to extend God s mercy. The last October count reports that there are 1,000 faithful who come and celebrate the five Masses, including the 5PM Vigil Mass on. The capacity of the church is 810. This indicates that there are still rooms. I sincerely thank both James Fieber and Stacie Bowman for speaking about the 2016 ADA (Annual Diocesan Appeal) several weeks ago. I am also thankful to many of you who have already contributed to this year s ADA whose slogan is Rejoicing in God s Mercy, Together in Christ. As you know, the sound system in our church is showing its age and the projectors are getting dimmer and cannot show videos clearly. After consulting with Parish Pastoral Council and Finance Council, I would invite you to raise $50,000 for upgrading the sound system and projectors. When combined with the ADA assessment of $101,470, the total campaign goal is $151,470. I pray that you will join me in contributing to the joint effort campaign. Here is the summary. and projectors in the church $151, 470 Diocesan Goal Parish Goal Total Goal Participation $101,470 $50,000 $151,470 Look, Hear, and Share For upgrading the Sound System and projectors in the Church Please remember that all contributions to the ADA are fully tax deductible. March 12/13 is the last weekend to pledge. Pledges can be paid monthly (up to 10 payments) or as a one-time gift. All pledges must be completed by December 31 st. Below is also the final report of the 2015 ADA. Gratefully, Fr. 3 Feb. 7, 2016 On January 19th, the Queen of Apostles Student Council and some members of the SLEagles participated in the Super Kids-Super Sharing event in conjunction with the Diocese of San Jose, the San Francisco 49ers and the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee. At this event, our school representatives performed community service by sorting donated items and had a chance to participate in 49ers Junior Training Camp activities. In December we collected new/gently used books to be sorted at this event. PEACEMAKERS The Story of Two Women Rosa Parks is known for refusing to give up her seat on the bus because she was black and was supposed to sit in the back and let white people sit in the front. This act of civil disobedience by this Christian woman was symbolic of the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. She explained that she did not sit because she was tired but because she was tired of the oppression. She said that the more we complied with repressive laws, the more the oppression continued. In this month celebrating Black history, we celebrate Rosa Parks who was also born on February 4. There is another unknown woman who stood up for oppression. She was a wife and mother in the suburbs who knew of a Black woman and her family who wanted to move into a white neighborhood. In the 50s in America that was not an easy task. Realtors refused to show homes in white neighborhoods to Black families. She wisely brought the woman to her neighborhood and had her stay in the car. She went up to the door of the house for sale and as she was a white woman, was told that the home was available for sale. One minute later she walked up with her friend, the Black woman, and the realtor could do nothing but agree that the home was for sale. The lady purchased that home and later her son called my mother the Rosa Parks of Castro Valley. Yes, we can act in small ways. We can stand up to oppression wherever it appears. And it is sometimes closer than we think. Grief Group The grief support group s next meeting will be 2/15/2016. Please call Shirley if you have any questions or need to talk. Know the Signs & Report Human Trafficking On this weekend of the Super Bowl, a spotlight is being focused on Human Trafficking. However, the reality of human trafficking existed in our diocese and the wider Bay Area before we were chosen as a host city and will continue to exist in our county after the excitement of the Super Bowl has faded and disappeared. California has one of the highest numbers for reports on cases or victims of human trafficking in the country. As Catholics, we recognized the dignity and infinite worth of each and every human being. We are called to act when faced with injustice. Please help end human trafficking in our cities. Learn the Red Flags of human trafficking as well as ways you can help stop this evil at To join the Catholic Network to End Human Trafficking Christine Vincent at cvincent@dsj.org. Save the Date: The Stanford Blood Center will be at Queen of Apostles on Tuesday, March 1st, from 2pm-6pm. Confirmation Candidates will be taking appointments after all Masses on February 13, 14, 20, and 21. Contact youth@qofa.org. for more information. THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU ON WEDNES- DAYS DURING LENT. The times will be 6-8:30 pm in the church. We will offer confessions and time for reflection.
