2 Dear Parishioners, The Jesus Christ the King Today is the final of the Church s liturgical year, and we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. One of the great mysteries of our faith is that in His crucifixion, Jesus is revealed as King and Savior of all. The image of Christ the King that we find in today s Gospel challenges our ideas of what a king or ruler should be. Jesus is not seated on a luxurious throne surrounded by people who await his command. Instead, the king in the gospel scene is taunted and left to die on a cross. As Jesus hangs on the cross, the leaders and soldiers who taunt him wonder what kind of king he is. A criminal, who is next to Jesus, asks to be taken into Jesus kingdom. This Gospel account helps us to see that Christ is the king who cannot be overcome by the world, or by sin, or by death. His reign brings salvation to the outcast and the sinner, and brings hope to us all. He is a king like no other; not a king who sits high upon a throne with us at His feet, but a king who invites us to be one with Him and share in life eternal. A few weeks ago, Bishop McGrath visited Queen of Apostles School and celebrated Mass with the student body and their grandparents and special visitors. During his homily, Bishop McGrath asked the students who their friend was, to which they responded that Jesus was their friend. The bishop elaborated further and asked the students to talk to Jesus as they would their other friends. This is where we must start. We must take the chance to reacquaint ourselves with Jesus as our friend and fully immerse ourselves in this friendship. For it is in knowing Him that we build our faith and it is in building our faith that we are able to recognize Jesus as King and Savior of all. Every day we see street signs that tell us where it is dangerous to enter, when to stop, or where to exit, and we use these signs to guide our actions. Much in the same we must look at the Crucifix as a sign of Christ as King and Savior and use this to guide our daily actions. Christ is King because in his death and resurrection, he brought salvation to all humankind. We show that we are his followers when we live our lives accordingly. The question therefore is how do we recognize Christ as King through our daily actions? How do we spread His message and His love, not only through our words but more importantly by the way we treat others? How can we be like the thief, who crucified by Jesus side recognizes Jesus as Messiah and King, and finds salvation? As we prepare for the upcoming week of Thanksgiving, let us look to this sign and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. The monetary and in-kind donations totaled just over $6, That is outstanding for a three week parish drive. Your gifts and prayers will help restore dignity to those who struggle for love, peace and acceptance following such a traumatic assault on their well-being. PEACEMAKERS We honor the Vietnamese martyrs this week who in the 16 th century, suffered for their faith. They were in the minority when Christianity came to Vietnam with the Spanish missionaries. One of the later martyrs was Andrew Dung-Lac, a diocesan priest born in He was a dedicated catechist and was ordained in The emperor Ming-Mang expelled all foreign priests and ordered Vietnamese Christians to renounce their faith. Fr. Andrew was arrested and slain on December 21, Quote from Fr. Andrew: In the midst of these torments, which usually terrify others, I am, by the grace of God, full of joy and gladness, because I am not alone Christ is with me. Let us remember Fr. Andrew and all the other Vietnamese martyrs who lived for Christ. From the Social Justice Committee SHOEBOX PROJECT: Dear Families, Queen of Apostles Middle School Ministry is working with our preschool to collect shoeboxes filled with Christmas cheer which will be delivered to underserved children both locally and abroad. A bin can be found near the Faith Formation office where donations of NEW toys, crayons, coloring books, mittens, socks, hygiene items, individually wrapped packages of crackers, cookies, etc., can be placed. We are committed to filling 70 shoeboxes for children housed at the San Jose Family Shelter, and additional boxes will be sent overseas through Operation Christmas Child. A full list of desired items can be found in the vestibule. All donations must be made no later than Nov. 20 th. Please be as generous as possible. We lovingly pray for those in our Parish and families who cannot join us at Mass especially, Dave Lamb, Nancy Crisafulli, Tomas Arguello, Venice Romiti, Ken Koenig, Joann Caban, George Hakius, Jeanne Futrell, Barbara Carrillo, Ben Hatfield. Please let us also pray for all our servicemen and women who serve in the Armed Forces throughout the world and remember them in our hearts today and everyday.
