The children showed great love and respect for these very treasured guests.

3 Page 23 Tess Talks Dear families and friends, This Newsletter we are focusing on our second value, Love. On one hand it is a short word and the meaning is quite simple however it can be one of the most difficult values to put into action. Loving ourselves and in turn showing love to others is what God asks us to do. And it s not always easy! Lately at school we are talking quite a bit about expectations and how we treat our world and show respect for each other. Whether it s the cooler weather or we ve just settled into the term but some children are struggling a little with this, and having their own needs met is all that is on their mind. Staff are talking simply and clearly with children about how at St Anthony s we only use kind words and we keep our hands to ourselves. When I m called to work with a child who is making choices that affect others I remind them of the need to manage themselves and care for others. I am talking firmly about consequences and when needed, children are missing out on yard play a real consequence for hurting another, whether by words or physical actions. I m sure the strategies we use at school are similar to those families use and I know, together we will support our young people to grow and develop the skill of making good choices. And, if your child ever comes home and says they had to talk with Ms Harford rest assured most of my conversations with children are pleasant and positive. You ll be informed if you need to know of any B choices being made at school! Recognising difference and celebrating diversity is a way to show love. At school, we make accommodations and adaptions for many reasons and at times we let some children or age groups do something a little different. However at the moment while we are strengthening our ability to manage ourselves and respect others I am reminding you that children are asked not to bring toys or special items into school unless specifically approved by the teacher. We have had a few issues lately with some toys and unfortunately, banning them from the school has been the only way to have peace. If your child is cross with you when you tell them they can t bring an item to school, feel free to tell them that I ve said they can t bring it in! Family Bunting A big thank you to Jess Barnes our Youth Worker who has taken on the role of making our family bunting that hangs outside our Resource Centre. This is a visual symbolic representation of our love for our families. It s great to see children looking at all the photos, deepening their understanding of their friends family and also, seeing that we all have a connection as well, we belong to family. If you haven t had an opportunity to do your triangle whenever you finish it, bring it in, or you ve misplaced it, don t worry, there are spares! Grievance Policy As you are aware all organizations are required to have policies and procedures in place that support their practice. A school is no different, we have many documents that outline our work and how we perform our business of education and care. The school board has recently reviewed and ratified the Grievance Policy, this can be find on our website and if you d like a hard copy please visit the front office where one can be printed for you. The purpose of this policy is primarily to inform you of how we manage grievances at our school and how we ask parents to address concerns. There s a flow chart to support our practice and procedures. If you have any questions please don t hesitate to contact me. As we prepare to celebrate Catholic Education Week I d like to acknowledge all those, past and present, who work so tirelessly for our existence. My mum, under difficult circumstances sent seven children to Catholic schools and I feel honoured today to be serving this wonderful community. Thank you to each and every one of you who make sacrifices and work hard to send your child to our school. Family life is complicated today and money is often stretched, know that your support of our school and our system is a blessing for your child and their future. Keep smiling Tess Principal
4 Page 4 5 Religious Identity And Mission Families.Where Love Begins We are slowly adding to our flag display. If you have mislaid the material or you would like us to complete the flag at school with your children please let me know. It would be great if every family at St Anthony s was represented. This week please join us for Catholic Education Week. Families are invited to join with us in some of the activities throughout the week.
5 Page 5 Religious Identity And Mission Why do We Love? In God s eyes...every child matters...every person matters...every person is lovable and has the capacity to love. As a Catholic school we recognize that every family has a story, every child is a gift and every human being finds meaning in the place where they belong. The story of Jesus is central to the life of a Catholic school... In his life he showed us that all people matter to God especially those who feel marginalised and different. In his stories he helped people to understand the abundant love and mercy of God for all people and all creation. In his death he showed us that God understands what it is like to suffer and be left alone. In his resurrection he showed us that love never ends...love is greater than fear...even greater than death and the darkest times in our lives.. To call oneself Christian is to take on the heart and mind of Jesus Christ and to live our lives as best we can, guided by his example. These words of Jesus, from John s gospel, along with an Easter cross, have been (or will soon be) in all main learning spaces in our school. This quote from Scripture reminds us of our most important task. The Great Time of Pentecost Last Sunday Christian communities, of all denominations, in all parts of the world, celebrated the great feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is the Church s birthday! It is the time we remember that God s spirit was given to the disciples so that they could continue the work of Jesus. This happened thousands of years ago and continues to happen today in our time and place in the lives of people who are inspired to lives of generosity, joy, kindness, patience and goodness. The Catholic Identity of and the focus of our Religious Education programme is always an invitation to live a life inspired by these Fruits of the Spirit. We are all invited, every day to look for signs of this Spirit in our school...we can choose to see these as insignificant events or we can choose to see them as sacred moments that remind us of what is most important and open us to the mystery of God...saying hello to someone we don t know, offering to help when we see someone in need, being grateful to those who work hard for the good of our community, using positive language rather than finding fault or criticising...these are all ways that Christians believe we experience the presence of God s spirit. Robyn Mercer Assistant Principal Religious Identity & Mission
