3 REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 Beloved Brothers and Sisters, We are living in a culture in which suffering is seen as nega ve and thus something to be avoided at all costs. God does not delight in human suffering. Yet we must always keep in mind that suffering is part of the human condi on. The call of the readings today is not a call to run away from suffering or regard it in any way as punishment from God but to face up to it squarely in the manner in which Jesus did. The true value of people is how much Jesus values them. We learn how much he values them by the price he is willing to pay for all humanity. Let me tell you a story I read the other day to help explain this. An older priest was reflec ng on his experiences for some younger priests: In my early days as a priest in a parish, I used to say to myself something like this before I knocked on someone s door: Behind this door is someone whom Christ died for If our Lord considers this person worth dying for, and there is no one whom he does not think is worth dying for, then this person, no ma er what he or she seems like to you, is worth a few minutes of your me. (He went on to say) I wouldn t claim to have lived up to that, and I don t always take the me to say those words to myself nowadays, but it is s ll a truth that I try to live by. How o en do we find ourselves to be grudging and impa ent when we have to spend just a few minutes for someone else? A few minutes of our me is not much to offer, but it is a measure of how seriously we take the cross. We may fantasize about offering our life for someone, but chances are that won t happen and we may never be asked to do so. However, if we really want to measure how willing we are to give our life for another, why not consider how willing we are to give up even a few minutes of that life? Our faith demands that we stand up for what we believe, and some mes that is difficult. Our faith demands that we reach out to those in need. Our faith demands that we make sacrifices. In today s reading from Isaiah, the prophet accepts God s call to prophecy, but he suffers terribly at the hands of his persecutors. St James insists that Chris ans are obliged to put their faith into ac ons; clothing and feeding those in need. In Mark s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, Whoever wishes to come a er me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. If the cross of Christ was just a word, then all we would have is memories; all we would be doing as Chris ans is commemora ng an event from history. Yet the cross is a reality today. It is a choice made by every human being: either to be one who carries the cross, or to be one who imposes the cross on others. To carry the cross is not a death wish but a life wish. It is possible to love without faith and hope, but not in the way Christ loves. Our faith demands that we take up our cross. Every Sunday when we walk into this church we make the sign of the cross. May it remind us of what Jesus asks us to do. May faith lead you, hope help you on the way and love greet you at the end of your journey through life. 5 COMMUNITY NEWS PAGE 5 SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 BLESS THE BEASTS AND THE CHILDREN On Saturday, October 6, from 9:00 am 10:00 am, we will once again celebrate the Blessing of the Animals in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi on the front steps of St. Catherine church. Celebrating our 14 th year, this joyful and sometimes chaotic gathering of furry, scaly, feathery and just plain old skin (human beings) is in honor of their patron saint and gives glory to our heavenly Father, God and Creator of all things. All are invited to bring their folding chairs, their pets and/or just themselves and rejoice in the Lord with us! Then, at the conclusion of the animal blessings, Deacon John will clean up, change albs and at precisely 10:30 am begin the celebration of the sacrament of (infant) baptism inside the church. Please note: While anyone can come and watch the baptisms, pets must remain outside and those being baptized will be limited to only those children whose parents, according to canon law, pre-registered and received sacramental preparation beforehand. OUR LADY OF FATIMA PRAYER GROUP The World Apostolate of Fatima, Our Lady's Blue Army, is the official voice of the Catholic Church on the apparitions, history, and spirituality of Fatima.
