1 Jubilation 34 Manra Way, Pacific Pines 4211 PO Box 486 Helensvale 4212 Ph: Fax: The voice of Jubilee Primary School 26 October 2011 Website: Halloween All Hallows (All Saints Day). Tuesday, 1 November We see the Halloween traditions imported from the States in their commercialised and popularised forms and wonder: Is this what Aussie kids want or need? Some see it as another way for shops to make money. Some see this as a concerning turn creating an interest in children in unhealthy demonic spiritual beliefs and practices. Some think, do we want our kids trick-or-treating? Is it safe? I d like us to think about where Halloween stands in church teaching and Christian faith. Christians believe all those who belong to God are His saints. A festival, celebrated with Masses, was begun to recall the joys Christians have knowing that death is not the end; it is a transition to eternal existence with God. Christians wanted to celebrate, so took a day to do so. It was known as All Hallows (Hallows meaning saintly or set-apart ones) Mass. The day Christians took had been a day used by early British pagans to try to ward off evil beings and spirits that caused them great fear and dread. Christians turned it around, All Hallows Eve (Halloween) became a day for laughing and joking about the silliness of the fear of death and the devil s minions. Christians had the sure joy and hope in eternal life in God; so there developed in Scotland and Ireland and then by their descendants in the USA, a festival we now see as Halloween. We Christians at Jubilee will be starting All Hallows Day with a Eucharist to recall the defeat of death by Christ Jesus. Different Church Traditions All Saints Day is celebrated by Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, Anglicans, and Lutherans However, because of their differing understandings of the identity and function of the saints, what these churches do on the Feast of All Saints differs widely. For Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and to some extent, Anglicans, All Saints is a day to remember, thank God for, but also to venerate and pray to the saints in heaven for various helps. For Anglicans and Lutherans the day is observed by remembering and thanking God for all saints, both dead and living. It is a day to glorify Jesus Christ, who by his holy life and death has made the saints holy through baptism and faith. Other churches do not observe this day at all, but all churches are thankful to God for His work in the life of believers and the assurance that those who die in Christ live eternally with God. An Invitation to celebrate All Saints Want to give thanks for the life of a loved one who has died or to remember the saints? All parents are invited to an All Saint s Day Eucharist lead by Rev d Ron Bundy of Gold Coast North Anglican Church. This will take place in the Jubilee Hall Meeting Room at 7.30 am on Tuesday, 1 November. 2 Dear Parents and Friends, DUTY FINISHES AT 3:20PM Just a friendly reminder that supervision of students in the afternoon both at the cross up the top of the school and down at the crossing and shelter shed in the Binstead Way Car Park finishes at 3:20pm. Most days we find ourselves there a few minutes past 3:20pm, but don t be surprised, especially down below, if you turn up at 3:22 and we have left with your children with us. If this is the case, the children will be brought to the Administration Office and you will be contacted. For those children whose parents cannot be contacted they will be taken to Jubilee OSHC which will incur a cost to be paid by parents. I thank you also for your support with this. JUBILEE SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT This year s Jubilee School Christmas Concert will be held on Friday, November 25th, It will be held in the Multi-purpose Hall. More details will be sent home shortly. SCHOOL FEES School fee accounts for the final quarter of 2011 were sent home week one of this Term. The due date for payment is Friday, November 4th Please ensure that payment is made by this date or that contact is made with the school if payment is not possible. On review of the amount of outstanding school fees due to the school, it was made quite clear to me that we are still chasing well in excess of a considerable amount in unpaid school fees. In a school such as ours, such an amount of income is desperately needed to meet our commitments for IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL OUTSTANDING FEE AMOUNTS BE SETTLED ASAP. ALTERNATIVELY MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE ME IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY. Trying to avoid paying school fees, not having enough funds ready for direct debits or forgetting to, does not help either party. I realise that the current cost of living is biting all of us extremely hard, but it is important for Jubilee s continued well being that ALL fees are either paid in full or openly and honestly accounted for. My sincere thanks to those families who ensure that their fees are always paid on time. QUOTE of the WEEK: "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself." Leo Tolstoy THOUGHT for Your WEEK Change Yourself By Catherine Pulsifer Repeatedly, we attempt the impossible and try to change other people but attempting this is a waste of time! Think of a time when you tried to change a personal habit. As we have absolute control over how we think, you would assume changing a habit is easy. It is not. Stop and consider how difficult it is for us to try and change other people when we have no control over their thoughts. You cannot change other people, you can only change yourself. If you want them to change, then you must change. Whether it is the behaviour of a child, a boss, a co-worker, a friend, or a spouse you are the one who must change. You can change the way you express your feelings towards the behaviour. Or, you can change your reaction to the behaviour. In some cases, you may have to change by accepting the behaviour. The point is, you have control over you and that is the only person you can change. God bless you and best wishes for the week ahead. David Sewell PRINCIPAL
3 Cybersafety Information Evening Encore Performance APA NEWS The fans have called out Encore! and Snr Con Paul Shaw never fails to deliver. This Thursday night in the MPC Meeting Room, Paul will deliver his information session on Cybersafety. This will be an encore performance of the session he delivered in Term 3, which was highly regarded by all who attended. The session is provided to give parents ideas and tips about how they, and their children, can remain safe while using and exploring the internet. Time 6-7PM MPC Meeting Room Thursday 27 October 2011 School Special Focus Reflecting on the item Mr Sewell spoke about at last Monday's assembly about rubbish around our school, I have come up with the theme: "You are not a pig living in a sty, pick the litter up when it catches your eye!" Simply put, rubbish left around the school breeds germs and looks bad. Do your part to look after your own rubbish and pick up litter that is lying around the school grounds. Jubilee School Disco Friday 28 October Prep to Year 2 5:30pm to 7pm Year 3 to Year 7 7:30pm to 9pm Cost $5 per child Tickets available at 8:15am and 2:45pm We are having the disco in our Multi Purpose Centre. 4 Remember East Timor From the APRE We turn on the tap and get fresh, safe and clean water we take it for granted. We walk in a room at night and switch on a light we take it for granted. We flush the toilet - we take it for granted. We go to the supermarket, and are stressed by choice and we take it for granted. We send our children to school, and expect computers, and all the rest and take it for granted. We get a wage, and if not welfare and we expect it to be more than $2 a week. But to our little neighbour to the north, East Timor, none of this is taken for granted, because most people do not have any of it. St Mary s community has been a sister parish with Suobaso for a number of years and I encourage you join them in their support of the people there. Visit to St Mary s Mass It was a joy to join together with the St Mary s community last night and to welcome back Fr. Antony. Fr Antony shared with us the joy of being able to be with his Mother on the last days of her earthly life. Please keep Fr Antony and his ministry in your prayers. It was so pleasing to see the Jubilee altar servers, Will, Stephen and Ryan and to have Caitlin, Tanesha, Jacqui, Kate and David lead us in prayer. Our thanks goes to Maggie Moodley who liaised. All Saints Day: Remember our loved ones who have died A Eucharistic Service for Jubilee Staff and Parents to pray to our Lord for those who have passed from this mortal life will take place in Jubilee Hall Meeting Room, on Tuesday 7.30am, 1 November. You are all most welcome to this special service. Rev d Ron Bundy of the Anglican Church will be leading prayer. Halloween The Assembly next week will offer a Christian perspective on the popularised Halloween celebrations. They are closely related to the meaning of All Saints Day. Trevor Sketcher Assistant Principal Religious Education Cybersafety On Thursday and Friday this week, Sr Constable Paul Shaw visited the Year 6 and 7 classes to talk about Cybersafety. The students learnt about how to be safe and responsible users of ICT. Some of the topics discussed were cyberbullying, inappropriate content, your digital footprint (take care what you share) and netiquette. Thank you Constable Shaw! World's Apart Day On Tuesday 18th October, the students in the Caritas Committee hosted 'World's Apart Day'. They set up a stall in the Hub and distributed a small amount of rice at morning tea to children in Years 5-7. We were able to raise a grand total of $121!! Thank you to all the students who got involved and experienced what it's like to 'go without' like people in need in our global community.
