1 From the Principal ST JOHN S PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 21 October 2015 Edition Dear Parents, I ask you all to keep Tim Boyle in your prayers as he has had major surgery late last week. Tim, the husband of Robyn, and dad of Amelia (1L) and Adele (3P) has been quite ill for sometime. We pray that the outcome of the surgery will prove to be a great success. 22nd OCTOBER - FEAST DAY OF POPE JOHN PAUL II Tomorrow is the feast day of St Pope John Paul and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some of his very special words. Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought. The future starts today, not tomorrow. When freedom does not have a purpose, when it does not wish to know anything about the rule of law engraved in the hearts of men and women, when it does not listen to the voice of conscience, it turns against humanity and society. Social justice cannot be attained by violence. Violence kills what it intends to create. SCHOOL CLOSED - MONDAY, 2nd NOVEMBER A reminder that the school will be closed on Monday, 5th November. This day has been set aside for staff to focus on Assessment and Reporting. Please note that OSHClub will not operate on that day. MELBOURNE CUP DAY - TUESDAY, 3rd NOVEMBER - SCHOOL CLOSED A reminder also that Tuesday, 3rd November is also a public holiday. The school will not operate on that day. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR INTERSCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS Congratulations to all our teams that qualified for the semi finals last Friday. It was a great way to finish off a very successful summer competition of the I.D.S.S.A competition. A special mention to the boy's Volleyball Team on being Runners Up, an outstanding effort. CONGRATULATIONS TO CLARE JENKINSON I am thrilled to let you all know that one of our teachers, Clare Jenkinson, gave birth yesterday to a beautiful baby girl, Olivia Sarah. Congratulations Clare!! WELL DONE PREP N Congratulations to Prep N for collecting the most drinks for the upcoming school fete. The children were rewarded with a hot chip lunch. 7 Hours of Operation: Before Care 6:45am-8:45am After Care 3:20pm-6:00pm Staff: Trent Harkom & Jill El-Khoury Hi everyone, This week at OSHClub we have gotten up to a lot of fantastic activities! We made some delicious chocolate rum balls and some fruit smoothies for breakfast which the children loved. We also did a few pirate themed activities and made some very ferocious looking paper-plate pirates! We also made some slime like putty which is one of the more requested activities that we do and the children thought it was great! It s that time of year again where all of our medical records need to be updated so please be aware I might have some forms to hand out to children/parents to be filled out in regards to medical conditions. Please be aware that as our numbers are increasing significantly (particularly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) it is becoming more important for parents to book their children in online or to give more notice for an on the day booking. This gives us enough time to ensure we are adequately staffed and able to provide a quality program for you and your children. If your child/ren are absent from school or other arrangements are made for them, could you please let us know that they won t be attending afterschool care. On the day cancelations/bookings must be made with a phone call or text to the program number on You will not be able to make online bookings or cancelations on the day. Online bookings or cancelations can be made up until midnight the night before. We hope to see you at OSHClub! Enjoy the rest of your week. 8 Father Mario s Sermon 18 October 2015 (29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B) Isaiah 53:10-11; Psalm 32:4-5,18-20,22; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10: Anyone who wants to become great among you, must be your servant Last week we saw the wealthy man ask Jesus: What must I do to enter the kingdom of heaven? Wrong question! It is not about what you can do, but rather how to respond to God s loving invitation. You need to approach God as a poor person, letting God enter your life. Today the brothers John and James, two of the closest friends of Jesus, ask: We want you to do us a favour! Another very strange way of addressing God: I will tell you what you can do for me. We want the best places of honour in your kingdom; we want honour and power. When Jesus taught the disciples to pray he told them to pray: Holy be your name! Thy kingdom come! Thy will be done on earth as in heaven! This is the proper attitude of discipleship, of a faith-based relationship with God. Like the poor man who acknowledges his total dependence on God s providence, approaches and asks for mercy: Lord show me your will. I am afraid that very often, like John and James, I approach God with a wrong attitude in prayer; telling God what I want and getting upset when I do not get what I think I need as soon as I request it. My attitude in prayer needs to be similar to that of the poor man who approaches God in humility and simplicity, begging for mercy: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner; give us this day our daily bread. Lord show me your will daily and give me the strength to live it in my life. I do not pray to tell God my needs; God knows everything, he knows what I need even before I open my mouth! In prayer I lay before God what I think I need, asking him to show me what my real needs are: to listen to his word and do it in my life. To submit to his will every day. Like John and James I often look for power and honour. I want to be seen and appreciated. Power is good if used properly but can be very destructive when it is abused. History constantly shows us examples of both these aspects of power: political leaders who had power and used it to push, subdue, control and destroy people around them, and others who used their power to help humanity. People who used their power to surround themselves with enormous wealth; and others who share their wealth with those less fortunate, helping them to get on their feet. We all have some level of power. How do I use the power entrusted to me? Do I use it to serve me or to reach out to others? Do I use it to grow and to lord it over others, or to help others grow physically, materially and spiritually? In the Christian perspective it is those who are last who will be first. Children, who in the time of Jesus were considered the least in society, become the role model of the disciple: unless you become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus does not want me to be childish, behaving like an immature person, but child like, taking on the attitudes of children. Who else deserves to be honoured if not Jesus himself? Jesus who is descended from the line of kings, and the Son of God himself: Word of God become flesh. Yet he comes not to be served, but to serve. He is born in poverty, lives a life of poverty, and dies on a cross; giving up his life to ransom me! Slaves are freed after large sums of money change hands. I am ransomed and given the status of a son of God through Jesus life, death and resurrection! The greatest image Jesus left us was at the Last Supper in the gospel according to John: he stood up and washed his apostles feet. The master and lord washes the feet of his disciples! This is how I need to behave if I want to be great and to have power and honour among my sisters and brothers: by reaching out to others, sharing my gifts with others, being Christ to those around me, washing their feet. The last will be first and the first last! Fr Mario 8
