1 Term 2, Week 4, 10 May 2018 Dear Parents/Caregivers, Happy Mothers Day to all our mums! I am looking forward to another great morning celebrating the significant contribution you make in the lives of your children. I wish you an enjoyable day on Sunday filled with all the things you love. Family Week is an opportunity to do something as a family that perhaps you don t normally do. I have loved hearing the stories of cooking and afterschool activities that happened this week. Last night the Annual General Meeting of the P & F Association was held. Thank you to the outgoing members Liz Warde and Mark Byrne. Congratulations to the 2018 P & F Executive Jennifer Rosengren President, Maria Patorniti Vice President, Bridget McKinlay Treasurer, Cassie Moore Secretary, Nonnie Bysterveldt Diocesan Delegate. Louise Fitzgerald will continue on the Executive in the lead up to the 2018 Spring Fair. The leadership and generosity of parents in our community is reflected in the great progress that is occurring in our school. Thank you to all parents who continue to contribute in such positive ways to make a difference in our school. With every good wish, Mother s Day Breakfast Thank you to the many people over who are supporting and attending the Mother s Day Breakfast. I look forward to sharing this special morning with you tomorrow. NAPLAN Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the Year 3 and Year 5 students will complete the NAPLAN Testing. These tests provide a snapshot of student progress in relation to reading, writing and numeracy. To support the students completing these tests we will make some changes to the timetable to accommodate the testing periods and breaks which are required. It is essential all students in Year 3 and 5 are at school on time to ensure they are ready for the testing periods. Online Safety and Permission At the beginning of each year we ask you to indicate whether you give permission for your child to appear in school-based publications or wider BCE and public forums. This enables you to decide where your child s photograph appears. Parents/Caregivers make these decisions based on a variety personal reasons. As a school we take this seriously and ensure that we have lists of children whose parents have indicated specific advice. If we are unsure, we will contact you to clarify if we can use a photograph of your child. In the spirit of keeping our children safe, we would ask you to seek permission from parents prior to posting or sharing photographs of other children. This is essential and I would welcome your support in ensuring this is put into practice at all times.

3 Invito From the AP-RE Mother s Day (MAGE S Day MOTHERS, AUNTIES, GRANDMAS AND EVERYONE who loves me!) Tomorrow we will celebrate the special women in our lives whose guidance and influence models what it means to be Jesus disciple at our Mother s Day Breakfast and Liturgy. The Liturgy will be at 8.30am. As a mother, I enjoy this special day with my family, however as a daughter it s a day tinged with sadness as my mum is no longer with us. I always knew I was blessed with a very special mum. My dad passed away suddenly when I was 17 and the sadness of this loss engulfed our whole family. My mum gathered us in her arms, held us tightly and loved us all through this time, thinking only of us. It wasn t till later that I reflected on the strength and courage she showed. My sister and brothers all had a very strong and precious relationship with our mum and that then flowed into a lovely bond with each of her grandchildren. She was at every Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, birthday, first day of school, final day of school, graduation, semi-formal, formal, every moment that was important to each of us was so very important to her as well. It was so touching to see that special relationship with my own daughters who still speak lovingly of Nana Jean. My mum also had a great love for her Catholic faith and that has been a great influence in my life. I hope each of you will enjoy this day with your family. I will celebrate with my family, knowing that my mum is there, always in our hearts. The month of May is a special time for Catholics to pay homage to honour our Blessed Mother Mary. Each morning as we gather we will pray the Hail Mary. The Hail Mary is one of the prayers we pray when we say the Rosary. These are the mysteries of the Rosary The Joyful Mysteries, The Glorious, The Sorrowful and Luminous Mysteries. First Eucharist Congratulations to the children who celebrated First Eucharist last weekend. These are some more reflections of our time together: On Wednesday May 2 nd, Year 4 went out with Mrs Williams, Miss Tuttiett & Ms Bozzi to the Prayer Stones. Year 4 went to the Prayer Stones with a scripture passage and responded to the words of God. The First Eucharist is a Sacrament consisting of the first time you eat the wafer (bread) and drink the wine. Year 4 made special tiles to indicate their love to God. Year 4S & 4H both got a Prayer Tree and tied a ribbon to their tree. Overall, we had a great Eucharist Reflection. (Max) Yesterday my grade went to the Prayer Stones with Mrs Williams, Miss Tuttiett & Ms Bozzi. At the Prayer Stones we all read a prayer together. Three children lit three different candles and we all tied a green ribbon on to a wooden tree. After that we read a different piece of scripture and responded to it. Mine was Romans: We all live in harmony with one another. Minutes went by and after about ten minutes we all got up and had a photo at the Prayer Stones. Then we all walked down to the undercover area and stood at a table. We were then given a wooden pallet (circle or square) to use beautiful tiles to create a cross or heart. I made a cross. I think it was wonderful and thoughtful thing to do. It was a wonderful experience. (Matilda) Holy Spirit Pentecost Celebration We will be celebrating at school next Friday with our buddy classes. There will a number of activities in which classes will participate on this day. They will also have a shared lunch with their buddy class. Holy Spirit School will be leading 9.30am Sunday Mass on 20 th May the feast of Pentecost. We invite all to attend this celebration. Sacrament of Confirmation Any child who is in Grade 3 (should be at least 8 years old on the day of celebration) and was baptised in the Catholic Church is eligible to enrol and participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation program. There will be 2 information sessions: Saturday July 21 st pm or Sunday July 22 nd pm Right of Enrolment: Saturday July 28 th at 6pm Vigil Mass or Sunday July 29 th at 9.30am Mass Celebration of Sacrament of Confirmation: Thursday September 6 th at 6pm. 4 Student of the Week AWARDS: No Assembly Friday 11 May School Photos School photos will be held on Tuesday 29 May. Children are to wear their formal uniform. Photo envelopes are going home on Monday 14 May. Spare envelopes are available at the office for multiple families wishing to order a photo. Sibling photo envelopes are also available at the school office. Vacancy- School Crossing Supervisors Casual positions exist for a School Crossing Supervisor at Holy Spirit New Farm. The School Crossing Supervisor may be required to work five days per week in all weather conditions. The hours of work for the School Crossing Supervisor are 1 hour and 15 minutes a day and comprises 45 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon. Current crossing time: 07:50am 08:35am and 2:55pm 3:25pm. The current rate of pay is $29.61 per hour. Commencement of work for the successful applicant is dependent on: The favourable outcome of a health assessment. 7 INVITATION CYBERSAFETY COMMUNITY DISCUSSON Organizer of Cybersafety - some of the challenges and helpful tips for guiding our children. Based on many conversations with likeminded and motivated individuals, this event has been born. Stuart is a passionate cybersecurity professional who works across Government and large enterprises in Queensland. With a preschool aged family, he is equally daunted by the challenges of guiding children through these digital times. Building from an understanding that cybersecurity is fundamentally a people and process challenge requiring assistance from technology, Stuart and many of his co lleagues strongly believe that broader education and dialogue are key to managing the risks associated with digitisation.
