Amen Important for next week Dear Parents/Caregivers On Tuesday of this week, the communities of St Mary s parish, primary school and Assumption College came together to celebrate the feast of the Assumption. This is a special celebration for our parish and school communities as our parish is called St Mary of the Assumption. In his homily, Fr Franco spoke of the significance of honouring Mary, the mother of Jesus. The feast of the Assumption honours her life giving presence in life and in death. When we think of Mary, we think of Mary as: Wife and mother Home maker Supportive relative Friend Community contributor It is from Mary that we gain strength to face the challenges of life. Mary was the constant in Jesus life. Even at his death, she was at the foot of his cross. It is there that Jesus gave his mother to each of us. From this gift of Mary, we too gain strength in life s challenges; the death of a family member, when children grow up and move away from home, raising a family in troubled times, even civil war, live as a refugee, comfort other family members who have fallen on bad times, struggle to raise a family in economic crises. The troubles Mary faced as a young mother whose son was destined to do great things give us strength to continue to move forward when we think times are challenging. When we reach out to help others through the gift of Mary, we are living as Jesus would want us to living in the love of God. 2 RE News First Eucharist Preparation God s Word Stories are an important part of life and faith. Families tell stories. Jesus told stories. At Mass we listen to the sacred stories of our Church family which come to us through Scripture, God s Word. This part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word. There are a number of readings in the Liturgy of the Word. We learn what these are, and how to respond. Year 3 Parish Mass Following a request from Fr Franco our year 3 classes will now attend the Parish Mass on Friday 1 st September, not on 25 th August as previously arranged. Family Mass Sunday 20 th August Please join us for the Parish's next Family Mass on 30 August at the 8:30am Sunday Mass. This is a great community celebration with readings and songs chosen with children in mind. Administration Important information about Influenza prevention measures: Many parents are aware by now of the number of different viruses that seem to have hit schools across the region in the past few months. We have received information from QCEC (Queensland Catholic Education Commission) that the Queensland Department of Health has recorded an increase in the number of influenza notifications and has requested schools to encourage staff and students to be vaccinated for influenza as well as promote other prevention and control measures. It is strongly recommended that if children are suffering with particular viruses and/or influenza that parents/caregivers keep children home to recuperate. Often when children return to school before they are fully recovered, their immune system is still weak and they become susceptible to further illness and/or infect other children.. and the cycle continues. We will continue to send children home who arrive with flu-like (and other virus) symptoms. The Department of Health advises: Every winter and spring, influenza outbreaks of varying severity occur across the country and it is important for schools to have a plan in place. In recent weeks we have seen a rapid rise in the number of influenza notifications including those for influenza B which often affects children. Encouraging annual influenza vaccination is still the most effective measure that schools can implement in order to lessen the likelihood of illness and lessen the risk of infecting others who may be more vulnerable. Any person aged six months and over can be vaccinated. Parents are encouraged to remind children (and themselves) of healthy practices which can help prevent the spreading of the flu: Cover coughs and sneezes Ready access to tissues and rubbish bins and ensuring tissues are disposed of immediately Wash hands regularly Limit the sharing of toys and other resources during the illness period. Regular washing of bed linen, clothing etc. Where possible, healthy practices such as those listed will be incorporated into school life.

3 St Mary s Market Day Thank You Once again the Market Day, held on Tuesday, in connection with our School Feast Day, was an amazing success with $ raised for various charities. Thank you to everyone who contributed in some way to this Market Day. Thank you to the people who worked hard to prepare the items and activities for our stalls. Thank you to the staff for their tireless efforts and to the parents who helped supervise children on the day.

5 VIP Fathers and Special Friends Day Including Grandparents, Uncles, Neighbours, Friends Monday, 28 th August am Visiting classroom at the Lower Campus am Lower Campus children move to Upper Campus am Fathers Day Liturgy led by Prep 9.50am onwards Morning Tea will be provided for all guests at the MacKillop Centre am Visiting Upper Campus classrooms Prep Gate The gate between the Prep and the Church grounds will now be padlocked during school hours. This is for student protection. BOOK FAIR at Lower Campus Book Week activities The Upper Campus students have been advised of three challenges that they may enter to celebrate Book Week. Challenge 1: make a bike or trike using recycled materials (taking as example the short-listed book The Patchwork Bike. Challenge 2: construct an escape from somewhere to everywhere from materials supplied in the library; Challenge 3: make a sign to somewhere students have read about. N.B. There will be no dress-up day at the Upper Campus. Dress-up day for the Lower Campus will be held on Friday August 25. Students can come dressed as a character from a book. The parade will be held at the beginning of the school day. Parents are welcome to stay to view the parade of book characters. Mrs Hilton, Mrs Standing, Mrs Lawson and Mrs Gray are accompanying the choir to Brisbane. The performance will occur as per the timetable which was sent home with students involved. After the performance and adjudication, we will return to Warwick. The bus will arrive at the Upper Campus at approximately 6.00pm.

6 Curriculum Dance Curriculum One of the highlights of our St Mary s Calendar is always the School Ball. The children have been busy learning traditional dances and a special dance to perform on the night. This year we are going to trial having just one school ball. This will be held on Thursday, 14 th September. More details will follow. Sport Southern Downs Athletics Congratulations to all students who participated in the Southern Downs Athletics. It was extremely pleasing to receive positive comments from a school principal, as she specifically mentioned the sportsmanship of athletes from St Mary s. Our students achieved well with the following results: Age Champion: Eli Costello 10 year boy Runner Up: Morgan O Leary - 10 year girl

7 Darling Downs Athletics Trials Children who have qualified to compete at Darling Downs Athletics trials, on Tuesday, 29 th August, have received an information package. A note providing full details, will be given to all team members. P&F News P&F Meeting tonight, 7.00pm in the Lower Campus Library. All welcome 50 / 50 RAFFLE IS ON AGAIN! St Mary s is conducting our annual 50/50 Raffle. 50% of the total amount raised will go to the school and you have the chance to take home the other 50% of the total amount raised. The final amount of the prize depends on the number of tickets sold. The more tickets sold the higher the prize. For example: If we raise $5000, then the school gets $2500 and the winner gets $2500. The winning ticket will be drawn at St Mary s P & F Trivia Night on Friday, 1st September You do not have to be there to win it! You just have a buy a ticket! Father s Day Stall The P&F Association will be running a Father s Day stall on Thursday, 31 st August and Friday, 1 st September.
