1 St John the Apostle Parish School Newsletter Thursday, 31 March 2016 Volume 3, Issue 9 Dear Families, Staff and Friends of St Johns Happy Easter I trust that you all had a safe happy and holy Easter with your family. In amongst all the celebrations, chocolate and family gatherings I hope that you made some time to attend some Easter celebrations. I attended the Good Friday Stations of the Cross, with our senior students leading the service. I found this ceremony to be quite moving. Friday s liturgy by its very nature is sombre and a strong reminder for us all of the pain and suffering that Jesus experienced for us in ultimately dying on the cross. In contrast, the Easter vigil is a most spiritual and uplifting liturgy as we celebrate the risen Lord and rejoice in his glory. Today we gathered as a school to celebrate the resurrection and rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus. Happy Easter to all! Stations of the Cross On Good Friday, 17 of our students from Years 4 7 lead the Stations of the Cross in prayer, song and movement. The message they gave focussed on Jesus life and how he spread the news to love, care and forgive. That message continues today, for us, here and now, to do the same in our lives with our children, spouses, parents, colleagues, neighbours, friends and even strangers. Many thanks to the following students and their parents I was so proud of their efforts Stations of the Cross readers and actors: Harry Caught, Luke Mitta, Ronan Murray-Walpole, Thomas Prouse, Ryan Melville, Jacob Parker, Sean Hall, Caitlyn Angel, Natalya Lademan, Rebbecca Lollbeck, Hannah Lewis, Leela Eden, Joshua Prouse, Seb Caught, Kyra Hall, Neeka wasink A place of. Welcome, Love and Truth Spirited by our Catholic faith and in partnership with parents, parish and the wider community, we are committed to providing a high-quality, holistic and contemporary education for our students. We respond to the message of St Luke the Evangelist, by being a welcoming and inclusive school community, as part of the Noarlunga/Seaford Parish. We acknowledge the writing of St John the Apostle, God is Love (1 John 4:8), by striving to love one another as God loves us. We continue the tradition of St Dominic, by seeking truth and justice through lifelong learning and prayerful reflection. I would also like to thank the Senior Unit students who s Artwork (tricdics) of the Stations of the Cross have been painted on canvas and have ben gifted to St Luke s. We have received considerable positive feedback from Fr Tony & Fr Charles and a number of parishioners. The Easter Season began on Easter Sunday and continues for 50 days. This is an opportunity for us to cultivate a spirit that defines who we are as Christians. So what does living the spirit of the Easter season mean in practical terms? Here are three suggestions. Live with Joy Joy is a deep-down gladness that cannot be taken away, even in the midst of sorrow. The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus teach us that suffering is transformed through faith in the Risen Christ. With this faith, we are able to hold on to an enduring sense of joy even in the midst of the sadness we experience from the loss of a loved one, a failure to achieve an important goal, or a setback during recovery from an illness. Live without Fear The Resurrection teaches us that God can overcome anything, even death. When the Risen Christ appears to the women at the tomb and later to his disciples, his first words are Do not be afraid! (Mt 28:5,10) These words speak to our hearts, helping us cope with the fear from the loss of a job, a serious illness, or a crumbling relationship. Our faith allows us to trust that God can overcome our most serious problems. Live with New Eyes Easter means to live with a sense of newness. The Easter spirit is a spirit of renewal that enables us to show up at work with a positive attitude, to renew relationships that have been taken for granted, and to express appreciation and affection to those closest to us. It means to see the world through new eyes God s eyes. We can use these 50 days to cultivate an Easter spirit that enables us to be truly Christian: embracing joy, living without fear, and seeing the world again as if for the first time Second Sunday of Easter, Cycle C April 3, 2016 Gospel Reading John 20:19-31 Thomas believes because he sees Jesus. Family Connection Our family life would no doubt be enhanced if we were able to transform Jesus' greeting into a central feature in our family's interactions. After his Resurrection, Peace be with you is the first thing that Jesus says to his disciples. This could be our daily family prayer for one another. In Sunday's Gospel, we also hear that Jesus next breathed on his disciples and gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Baptism, each of us has received the gift of the Holy Spirit as well as the forgiveness of sins. Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Our Baptism, then, invites us to share in the peace that Christ gave to his disciples and commissions us to share that peace of Christ by generously forgiving others as Jesus taught. As you gather as a family, think about gifts that you might receive together such as a colouring book and pencils, a book and bookmark, or an electronic item and batteries. Observe that Jesus also paired two gifts together in Sunday s Gospel. Read Sunday's Gospel, John 20:19-31 together and discuss the two gifts Jesus gave to his disciples: peace and the Holy Spirit. Plan an action that your family can do to share peace and forgiveness with one another. 2
