1 Page 1 What s News MISSION STATEMENT The aim of Staines Memorial College is to provide Christ-centred schooling in an atmosphere of love, respect, peace and discipline which will encourage students to achieve their potential for God School Rd, Redbank Plains QLD 4301 Principal s Message What s in a name? In numbers of cultures, including some Asian and African, it is more respectful to call a person by their family name than to use their first name. The family name carries history and describes one s identity. So, in most circumstances, I would be known as Sands. However, in my case, my first name is also a family name my mother s family name. I therefore carry two histories proudly. As you read ancient texts, including the Bible, the importance of a name is true also for Arabic and Jewish cultures. In Malaysian cultures people receive additional names at significant stages of life. The name chosen is usually intended to speak blessing and promise, although sometimes it is intended as a warning or curse. The choosing of a name for a new child carries great importance in many families. Our College name bears a history of service and sacrifice. While serving our God in the Mayurbhanj district of north-east India, Graham Staines met and married another Ipswich local, Gladys Weatherhead. Together they helped marginalised and poor people while raising a young family of three: a daughter and two boys. Sadly Graham, Timothy and Philip were killed in 1999 by people opposed to the help and love they offered in Jesus name. The founders of this college desired another quality Christian school for the growing community that surrounds us. The name of our College is a reflection of the acts of love and forgiveness of the Staines family. The Cross in our logo is a clear pointer to the forgiveness offered to us by God through the death of His son, Jesus Christ. The Path to the sun reflects that the way to receiving all God has for us is through the cross of Christ. Our God has numerous names as there are many aspects to his character. Our God is the God of Light. He is a creator God, providing the sun to bring light, heat and life. A most important name of our God is love. It best describes His character. Acting in loving ways towards Him, each other and ourselves is what God requires of each of us. Learning to live in such a way will result in a wonderful legacy for the Ipswich community. The most important name for us to honour is that of the Lord Jesus Christ. My continuing prayer is that we will continue to honour Him. May we always be known for the ways we work together, speak to one another and help each other. Throughout the remainder of this year I will expand on the names of God and their relevance to us. May the following words from the book of Isaiah encourage you. Do not be afraid - I am with you! I am your God - let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you. Isaiah chapter 40 verse 10. Pray that we would together, parents and educators, raise young people of strong Christian character. Pray for all the students as they prepare for final assessments. Stationery Lists Stationery lists for 2016 have been released. We recommend you purchase your stationery through Brodies Bookstore to ensure your child will receive the exact items as listed. These can be delivered to the College saving you time and money. Please note that every item on these lists have a specific purpose and it is important that every item is provided. 2 Page 2 Uniform Shop 2015 Regular hours for the Uniform Shop during term time are: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8am to 9am Thanks to the families who have put in their order form for uniforms next year. If you haven t ordered as yet, there is still time. Order now and pick up and pay in January. If you have used uniforms that are still in good condition and would like to DONATE them to the College we would like to hear from you. Please see Miss Bonita in the uniform shop. Please note, we do not buy your second hand uniforms, nor sell them on your behalf. The College accepts donations to sell with proceeds going to the Uniform Shop. Assessment Calendars Assessment Calendars for Term 4 will be released to students in Years 7-12 this week. These will also be ed to parents and uploaded to the College website. Assessment Calendars can be accessed online under 'News for Families' > 'Notes Home' Term Dates Term Dates for 2016 are now available on the College website under News for Families > Parent Information School Fees The 2016 Fees were ed to families over the mid-semester break. Also available from Reception. Buses 2016 The 2016 Application for Travel will be available for families soon. If you currently use the bus service, you will receive a new form in the mail. All students whether intending to continue or start to use the service must complete a 2016 form and return it to the College by the 18th January. Term s Notice A reminder that it is a condition of enrolment that families must provide the College with one term s notice of departure. If families leave without due notice, a term s fees will be charged and we take steps to recover the debts, including using debt collectors. Any action is not taken lightly but we need to be financially responsible and keep fees as low as possible for all continuing families. Mr Sands Day for Daniel Friday 30th October is Day for Daniel. Students are welcome to wear RED to raise awareness for child safety. Gold Coin donations are required for all students participating. Funds raised will be donated to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Enrolments for 2016 There is still time to get your enrolment forms in for 2016 classes. Please act quickly, as we will be closing off class lists shortly to prepare for next year. If you have friends thinking about enrolling, please let them know to put in their forms. Be on the lookout for our offer on the back of shopping dockets. With your docket, we are offering ZERO enrolment fee, a saving of $150. The offer will still be available in November for Prep Year 12 enrolments. Lost Property Don t forget to check for lost property outside Student Services. Items remaining at the end of the year will be donated to the Uniform Shop or charity. Father and Child BBQ With Nerf Battle An opportunity for Fathers and Sons/Daughters to get together for good food and some fun When: Saturday 7 th November from 4pm for an early dinner Where: River Heart Parklands Address: 20 Bremer Street, Ipswich. We will be in the Discovery Forest section of the parklands. Car park is where King Edward Parade turns into Blackall Street What to bring: Nerf guns. BBQ food is provided but participants can contribute with salad, drinks or snacks if desired. For catering purposes please RSVP to Chaplain Peter Jenyns by 1pm Friday 6 th November on Faith in Action News People who practically want to make a difference Next Meeting 27th Oct The next FIA meeting will be on Tues 27 October at 2pm outside the College Administration building. Tuckshop Day The last Tuckshop Day for the term will be held on Wednesday 4th November. Details and Order forms have been provided recently. Order Forms can be found at Reception or on our College website. Orders are due back by this Wednesday, 28th October.

3 Page 3 Chaplain s Spot Some wise words from Rabbi Bayha Ibn Pakuda: What is meant by wholehearted devotion to God alone? It means that in every act, public and private, the aim and purpose should be purely work for God s sake, to please him only, without winning the approval of other people. How do we achieve wholehearted devotion to God alone? In ten ways. If these are firmly set in your heart and you clearly make them the basis of your actions, then your devotion to God will be complete. Then you will turn to no one else, set your hope on nothing else, and mould your will to none other than God s. First is wholehearted acceptance that only God fills the universe. Second, that God is the source of all reality and is endlessly good; Third, that your goal is to work for God; Fourth, that you should rely on God alone and not physical beings; Fifth, that you get no ultimate gain or loss from physical beings, but only from the Creator; Sixth, that you should maintain evenness of mind regardless of whether people praise you or blame you; Seventh, that you should not make a show of spiritual activities to impress other people; Eighth, that you should not be caught up in personal gain when you are working for eternal life; Ninth, that you should hold God in reverence and be humble before him; Tenth, that you should use your mind to master your senses and use them with care and discrimination. 4 Page 4 Congratulations to all students who participated in this year s swimming Carnival. A great day was had by all. Congratulations to the winning house, Elliot! A full Swimming Carnival Report will be available in this year s Yearbook (available in January). Age Champions for 10 years and up will be awarded on a special Assembly next Monday morning (2/11/15) at 8:45am. Parents are welcome to attend this assembly.
