1 The GOOD News from Duncan s First United Methodist Church 2300 Country Club Road Duncan, OK Phone: Fax: VOLUME 14 OCTOBER 15, 2014 ISSUE 41 Sermon Series by Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle God has done much through our church and we have been very blessed because of it. Likewise, we have stepped up over the years as God has called. Our faith ancestors in FUMC first organized in a home in 1893 and soon after built the first church. When it was destroyed by tornado in 1898, they rebuilt. When it was destroyed by fire in 1900, they rebuilt. When they outgrew the facility, they built another in When it was destroyed by fire in 1968, they built our current church in 1971 and then expanded in More recently, we added on again with the FUMCenter in We have a history of pressing on in ministry for God and it is a call for us still today. God has plans and visions for our church. Our next sermon series, Press On, looks at how we can answer that call. The series is as follows: October 19 Grounded in Gratitude 2 Corinthians 8:1-15 October 26 Revealed in Prayer Matthew 6:9-13 We will combine our 2 worship services beginning Sunday, Oct. 19th thru Nov 23rd. November 2 The Impact of Ministry Mark 5:21-43 November 9 Lived in Faith Mark 10:17-31 November 16 Sacrificial Giving Mark 12:38-44 November 23 Returning Thanks Luke 17:11-19 Christians Concerned is in serious need of phone volunteers. If you are interested in answering the phone for a few hours a week please call Penny at the Christian Concerned office at Penny Gardner, Executive Director (580) P.O. Box 811 Duncan, OK christianconcern@sbcglobal.net BUS MINISTRY HAS BEEN PUT ON HOLD! We have had only a couple of people show an interest in this ministry, so we will be sure they have a ride on Sundays, but we don t have enough takers to start up a people mover yet. Please let the church know if you need a ride or know of someone who does.

2 Dear Church Friends, For many years I have experienced the loving concern and care of this church family. Once again you have upheld me with your prayers, your calls, cards, flowers, food, and love. Also, this wonderful blanket made by our women has been the greatest comfort to me. Thank you so very much more than mere words can express. God Bless you all. Sole Sunday October 26th from 1pm 4pm Volunteers are NEEDED. Contact Clay Cole Payless Shoe Store Love in Christ Sadie Budlong Sole Sunday is a day where the men from FUMC and from St. Paul s Methodist Church join together to fit and purchase shoes for children that may not have a decent pair of shoes for the winter. Volunteers are needed to work 1 or 2 hour shifts that day to help fit the boys and girls who were chosen to receive a new pair of shoes. Also, volunteers are needed to make calls to families to give them the information regarding the time to come to the shoe store. This project is very rewarding and humbling when you see the child s smiling face as he/she shows off the brand new shoes. Be sure to give Clay Cole a call!! Church Council Meeting Sunday at 11:30am in the parlor We re excited to announce that members of the First United Methodist Church now have the option to give their tithes and donations electronically. FUMC has signed up with easytithe, a respected and secure online giving tool, to provide a safe and convenient method for gifts to the church. easytithe provides the ability to use credit cards, debit cards, and echecks (ACH transfers) to make one-time or scheduled contributions to our church. As we move forward, echecks through easytithe will be our preferred method for scheduling automatic transfers instead of using our financial institution s ACH services. There are a few reasons for this, not the least of which is that you will no longer need to provide us with your banking information in order to schedule ACH transactions. You ll also be able to view and print your own history of giving, as well as modify schedules and amounts. Using easytithe s scheduling option will also ensure that your financial commitment to the mission of our church won t miss a beat, even if you aren t able to attend services. Currently, we're providing the option for giving to the General Church Budget, the Capital Campaign, or the Stewardship Campaign. The Building Fund option is no longer necessary since one of the primary goals of the Capital Campaign is to pay off the remaining debt on the building loan. In the future, we can set up temporary or permanent categories as needed, such as for special projects, missions, and so on. To access the easytithe portal, go to the church's website at and click on the easytithe button in the far left column. Once you have accessed the portal, you will have the option to give as a guest or to set up an account for future and regular use, which is the option we recommend. If you have any questions or concerns about using easytithe or if you would like to further explore the benefits, don t hesitate to contact me, and I ll be glad to answer your questions or even help you set up an account that you can manage yourself. Please consider leaving the checkbook behind on Sunday mornings and sign up for contributions through easytithe. You ll be glad you did! Sean Forehand Business Administrator

3 from the TOLLEHOUSE Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle, Senior Minister We have an associate minister! In what has been a year-long process, Kathy Gibson has been exploring a call to licensed ministry, which has involved a variety of steps. She was mentored by two ministers to explore her gifts and understanding ministry. She engaged in background and psychological tests. She was endorsed by the Lawton District Committee on Ministry and attended Licensing School, for a two-week crash course in ministry. Her process will continue with seminary-level coursework. For us, her role will remain the same. Her primary responsibilities are pastoral care, adult education, evangelism, and assisting in worship. The difference is that she will now be doing this as our associate minister. I hope we are able to see her in this new role. When she makes a pastoral care visit, not only has the church been present, but one of our ministers has been present. Kathy s new status is a great thing for our church. I think we forget how we have been blessed in the past by associate ministers and also Phil Wahl serving as associate minister emeritus for many years. Although we ve had some wonderful staff members in the recent years who have served us compassionately and wholeheartedly, we have had this kind of pastoral assistance. I hope you appreciate Kathy s dedication this past year to get to this point and support her as she continues to serve us. Winifred Bailey Director of Traditional Worship and Music This last Sunday the music included: an Introit that speaks to our role in the future of our church, Find Us Faithful. This anthem has been used many times and the choir and congregation enjoy singing it. The anthem was changed from the original plans to highlight the scripture reading from Jeremiah. If you Search With All Your Heart was done very well by the choir. There were many compliments after the service. The lyrics follow the scripture exactly and when you hear the spoken word followed by the words set to a melody, the message is really brought home: God has a plan for your life. This week the music will include Anthem of Gratitude and Revive Me. Rev. Dr. Tolle will continue the sermon series: Press On This week the topic will be Grounded in Gratitude. The scripture is 2 Corinthians 8:1-15. There is a place saved for you in worship. Come, you will be blessed. The Books Got Here!!! Wesleyan Sunday School Class began a new study, Before the Amen by Max Lucado. This is a study on prayer. This is a great class. Come join us if you don t have a Sunday School class. Winifred May God s Peace Be with You, Greg Kathy Gibson, Associate Minister Thank you so much for sharing my joy and excitement at being appointed associate minister at First Church, Duncan! I m certain that very few people have the privilege and honor to serve as a minister to the church which has been their home church all their life!! I am so grateful for the love and support I have received from this congregation through all the ages and stages of my life. So many of you have kept up with each step of my journey toward becoming a Licensed Local Pastor and checked on my progress every time we visited. I am especially grateful to Greg, who suggested this path might be the way to best use my gifts and serve my church; to my mom, whose unfailing love and confidence in me never waivers; to Ron, who has lived with me for 45 years and still believes I can serve as a minister(!); to my daughters and their families who remind me I am Mama and Nana; and, of course, to all the church staff whose love for each other and for our congregation keep alive the dream of God s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. KATHY S CORNER Shalom, Kathy

These cards will be sent to the entire congregation in the November capital campaign/stewardship bulk mailing. Hope you guys have a great week!! Faith, Grace, and Hope~ Tara Join us for Trunk or Treat Sunday, October 26th 4PM 6PM North Parking Lot First Student Ministry Justin Sommer Worship Leader and Youth Director Thank you so much church family! Molly and I were overwhelmed and impressed by all the people that came out to celebrate with us and our new start to our life. It has been both a crazy and relaxing 2 weeks. Getting married, and then getting a chance to relax has been great. The wedding video at the reception was made so you could see how great of a day that we had in Indiana. We are happy to be here in Oklahoma again ready to start our real life. This church has gone above and beyond what we would have expected coming back. Molly and I cannot thank the church, the staff family, and everyone else involved in the life of this church enough for all they do and all the support we find. Being so far from everything that is really familiar for Molly we could not be in a better place with more support and love. We do not have to miss our family as much because of the fact that we have such a huge lovely church family here! Thank you all so much for showing the love and support that you always do!
