2 Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, October 8, 2018 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison I Believe in Eternal Life At the closing of Olympic Games, the TV commentator opined that Imagine there s no heaven, it s easy if you try is our world s anthem. Wow! I hope not! That s a beautiful melody, but the lyrics are hopeless. Christians are to set our minds on things above. Heaven is our destination and our ultimate reality. If there is no heaven, we, of all people, are most to be pitied (1 Corinthains 15:19). Jesus endured the cross, despising its shame for the joy that was before Him. He was not bound to the earth. When I gave a children s sermon in Sallisaw, I asked the kids, How do you get to heaven I ll always remember little Frankie s direct answer: Well, you gotta get dead first. You can t win an argument with a 6-year old. Is this life all there is Jesus didn t think so. What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself (Luke 9:25) We can live eternally with God through the grace of Jesus Christ. These are comforting and inspiring words. We need to remember them and live for God s kingdom, not our own. Something to Think About: If you were to die today, do you know for certain you would go to heaven We need assurance that we will live with God forever. This is a gift God wants for you beginning today! (Be SURE TO READ 1 JOHN 5:11-15.) If you have this assurance, does it show How are you living into it Daily scripture readings for the upcoming week October 15: Isaiah 53:2-6, October 16: Luke 23:26-56 October 17: Galatians 5:7-15 October 18: Galatians 6:11-18 October 19: Ephesians 2:11-22 October 20: Hebrews 12:1-2 Life s Biggest Questions: What Do I Believe
3 Today s Speaker Tom Doyle Global terrorism is at an all-time high. But that s not the whole story. A new Jesus movement is erupting around the world, and persecuted believers are leading the way. The stories in his books introduce you to some amazingly courageous Jesus followers. Tom s books are available today at the CLC tables. Tom Doyle has a passion to tell the real stories behind today's headlines. His books are powerful and impacting, with first-hand accounts of real people living in some of the most dangerous places for believers in Christ in the world. Did you know that there is a vibrant underground church in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan Tom can take you there and introduce you to new followers of Jesus who have risked it all to follow their Savior. A gifted storyteller, Tom s books read like fast-paced, actionpacked novels that will inspire you and elevate your faith. Want to engage more after hearing today s speaker Learn about Asbury s Global Outreach and how you can be involved: learn, pray, give, go.
