If you have questions, please call Gina Flesher at and leave a message if needed. Guess What s Coming in September? In the past years we have made attempts to have a children s choir. Some years it didn t work at all and some years it worked a little.a very little. There was a time when the Children s Choir was a regular meeting, singing in worship, group. We are going to do this again. Beginning on September 3 the Children s Choir will again be a regular part of the Wednesday evening schedule. We will meet from 5:30 6:00 in the Music Suite. We will sing in worship three times before we put on a Christmas musical. Your children will be blessed from this experience. The congregation will be blessed even more. This group will be led by a group of adults. NOODLE ROLLING MONDAY 8:30am AUGUST 25th FUMCenter Don t forget your rolling pins! Beth Moore's "Children of the Day" has been chosen by the class for the Tuesday Morning Bible Study. This is an in-depth Bible Study of 1st and 2nd Thessalonians with Beth Moore s traditional homework and video lessons. The class will begin on September 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the Wesleyan Classroom. Workbooks are $ In addition, we will ask for donations to help cover the cost of the DVDs which will be placed in our church resource room after completion of the study. If you are interested, please reply to lpowelson@yahoo.com or call the church office so we can order a workbook for you. Our class has elected to stop in early November and pick back up in early January. This is a 9 week class and we decided to extend the study to 18 weeks by doing one half of the homework each week and watching one half of the DVD presentation each week. If by chance this format does not seem to work for us, we will change it back to the original 9-week study. And, of course, we will not meet on October 7th which is Chicken Noodle Dinner.

2 This letter was shared as the Mission Moment last Sunday, August 17th. SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 7 Summer is almost over and all the fall activities are in the final planning stages! Rally Sunday is the day we start our fall programs in the church and encourage everyone to rally back to Sunday school and worship! We have classes on Sunday morning at 9:00 for all ages of children and youth from infants through 12 th grade. We also have 6 adult classes and will be starting a new class for adults who are interested in studying A Disciple s Path which is designed to deepen our relationship with Christ and the church. FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE AND ASK FOR KATHY. JUSTIN SOMMER, Worship Leader and Youth Director I would first like to give a big thank you to this church for throwing such a great bridal shower for Molly. Molly and I were overwhelmed with all the support we got from this church! It is humbling to see all the support that this church has for both Molly and me at the start of our marriage. Once again thank you all so much! Secondly, thank you for everyone that came out to the concert on Sunday evening, to celebrate the missions of the summer, to enjoy some music and to finish off the night with celebrating with our church hostess. The night was uplifting and a time of celebration with our church family. I just really felt encouraged about our church at the end of the evening! Now to the youth ministry! We have some great things starting up this fall for the students, and I would love for you all to encourage the students you know and the students you see to come and be a part of it! And always know the invitation is there for you to be a part of the ministry, by shepherding or being a sponsor at one of the many events! Here are some things we have coming up! 3 Winifred s Notes NEWS FROM THE TOLLEHOUSE In about three weeks we will begin our next Disciple Bible Study class. This year s class is a modified curriculum called DISCIPLE FAST TRACK. It still gives the Old and New Testaments equal time emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God with a focus of transformation and not just information. Over the course of 24 weeks, participants will encounter God s Word as they read the Bible minutes each day. As we gather for a 75 minute class session, we will engage in dynamic group discussion based on a brief video and the week s Bible readings. The class will meet from 6:15-7:30 on Sunday evenings. Prayerfully consider this opportunity for your spiritual growth as a disciple of Christ. If you are interested, the cost is $35 and you will need to sign up soon as the first class session is September 7, and the daily reading starts a week before. As always, I am available for any additional questions you might have about DISCIPLE FAST TRACK. May God s Peace Be with You, Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle, Minister Winifred Bailey, Director of Traditional Worship and Music What a wonderful, glorious return to worship the Chancel Choir enjoyed on Sunday. There was a wide variety of elements in the service, only one of which was the Chancel Choir. Let s start at the very beginning. The prelude was played by Ben Parker and he did a great job with the Chopin Prelude. The Introit was sung by Angela Bailey. The song she chose was Lord I Want to be a Christian. This was one of the best that Angela has sung: Great range, great interpretation, and great countenance. Then came the hymns to which Ben Parker played the violin to accompany the singing. The anthem was Still Be My Vision and it was arranged for violin accompaniment. Again Ben Parker played. The violin really added a great flavor to the anthem. Of course Dr. Labé always plays a beautiful offertory. Closing the service with the final hymn, Mark Gropp entered the sanctuary from the back playing his bagpipe. We then sang 6 verses of Amazing Grace with bagpipe accompaniment. Yes, it was a Sunday that will long be remembered. Ben Parker is the grandson of John Ray and Louise Green. He will be a freshman at Cornell University this fall. Mark Gropp is the father of Molly Gropp who is Justin Sommer s fiancé. The music for this Sunday includes Any Dream Will Do from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Grace. There may be a solo also!! (continued in next column) (continued) Dr. Tolle s message for this week follows the sermon series: Our Dysfunctional Faith Family: Men Behaving Badly. The scripture is Genesis 37:1-4; We have a place saved for you in worship. Come you will be blessed. Will you? AT HOME CONCERT Great Way to end the Summer!! An evening that was designed to be a concert featuring our own Tara Cook and Justin Sommer grew to include several things. This evening event drew the largest crowd that we have enjoyed at any of these concerts in the past years. Was it because Tara and Justin were singing? Probably! Was it because we had wonderful reports from the Youth Force and the VIM trip to Alaska? Probably! Was it because of the Surprise Birthday Party for Betty Davis? Probably. Well, you know it just possibly could be all the above! The evening was great. Thanks to Justin Sommer and Molly Gropp for the wonderful videos for Youth Force. Thanks to Steve Taylor, Leah Berning and Scott Berning for the great pictures and narrative on the VIM trip to Alaska. If it made you want to take a VIM trip with our church next year, then, they really did their job. I heard many ask are you going back to Alaska next year? The answer is probably no but there are always other opportunities to serve as a Volunteer in Missions. Contact Jim Matthews or Leah Berning for more information. Thanks to Alice Bridges and the family of Betty Davis for planning and implementing the surprise birthday party. The tip buckets resulted in approximately $200 to help with the costs of opening a fourth class in our preschool. Tara and Justin did an outstanding job of music selection. The back up musicians of Gus Echols, Ben Stockton, and Richard Bailey were very good. Have you noticed that each time this group or the Praise Band performs that the music is exceptional. This group worked hard to put this evening together. There are not enough adjectives to convey how the evening was received. Thanks to all who had a part of the At Home Concert Evening! A Review of Sunday Morning at FUMC... By LaVonna Funkhouser I can't help but smile about this. Guess what church has an awesome variety of music? Mine! Today we had a violinist who also played some Chopin on piano, a lovely vocal solo, a 22- member, traditional vocal choir (accompanied by the violinist in addition to piano), a bagpiper playing "Amazing Grace," always virtuosic piano by Maestro Labé, a contemporary concert featuring drums, guitars, keyboard, and a great vocal blend, and more bagpipes! Yeah, we Methodists are a wild and crazy bunch! Come out to First United Methodist some time and give us a try.

4 TARA COOK, Director Children s Ministry and Nursery Coordinator What a wonderful couple of weeks we have had in the children s ministry!! We are gearing up for Wednesday Night Live! We have great teachers who have so graciously volunteered their time and gifts to this ministry and all the kids who attend. We have the potential of being the best children s ministry in town and this year we are going to live up to our potential! We are starting a children s choir this year that will sing in service September, October, and November with a Christmas Musical in December! Our choir will be directed by Winifred Bailey and should be a highlight of our WNL semester! Parents, please check your and/or Facebook inbox in the next few days for more details about the children s choir! PRESCHOOL Children s Ministry Booster Club Meeting Tuesday, August 26th at 6:00PM Conference Room TARA COOK, Director Preschool & Mother s Day Out Kathy Gibson Ministry Coordinator Kathy s Corner Why do bagpipes always make me cry? And I know I m not the only one I saw many of you out there wiping those tears away, too! And, I don t mean a little teary-eyed I mean that tightness in the throat, tears flowing, crying. It could have been the song, Amazing Grace which is so beautiful and touching and means so much to so many of us who realize what an amazing gift we have been given by God through Jesus Christ. I can t really analyze it, but I can confess that Sunday was a day of music and joy from start to finish! With Mark Gropp, Ben Parker, Angela Bailey, Tom and Winifred and our Chancel Choir leading the music in worship; then the opportunity to shower Molly and Justin with gifts and love and our presence; next a wonderful, simple meal prepared by Betty and her Kitchen Crew followed by Justin and Tara wowing us with their talent and gifts and praise accompanied so expertly by Ben Stockton, Gus Echols and Richard Bailey! We got to share in the mission work of our church by learning more about Youth Force and the Alaska Trip and then top it all off by actually surprising our dear Betty Davis with a HUGE birthday party!! Now that is what I call the church! I love you, church, so much and am so grateful to be a part of you and what you are doing in our community and our world! Shalom, Kathy Tara PRESCHOOL/MOTHER S DAY OUT SHEPHERDING PROGRAM SIGN UP NOW FOR WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE!! SEPTEMBER 3 DECEMBER 3 Wednesday Night Live is gearing up to begin on September 3. Lynda and Don Norman To my dear church family, I cannot express in words how I felt when I walked out of the kitchen last Sunday evening and saw my family and friends singing Happy Birthday to me. I was surprised and not happy with the person that planned the surprise but I did feel special. Seeing some of my family that I had not seen in quite a while made the evening very special. I can t list names of people to thank because I don t want to leave anyone out so if you helped in any way with my surprise birthday party I say thank you, thank you, thank you. I was surprised and you did a great job making it happen. Thank you for the many cards and gifts of love I received. You should not have gone to all that trouble. Thank you again for a very special evening. Betty Davis
