1 The GOOD News from Duncan s First United Methodist Church 2300 Country Club Road Duncan, OK Phone: Fax: VOLUME 14 SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 ISSUE 38 NEW WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE CLASSES START OCT. 8 1) Was God telling the truth when he said, 'You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart'? In The Case for Faith, author Lee Strobel turns his skills to the most persistent emotional objections to belief---the eight 'heart barriers' to faith. Dr. Greg Tolle will teach this 12 week class from 6:00-7:00 on Wednesday evenings from Oct. 8 Dec. 3. We need to order the books by Sept. 30. Please contact the church office to enroll and reserve a book. Cost per book is $ ) We will have another opportunity for adults on Wednesday evening that we are calling (maybe!) Love, Laugh and Dash! This will be an opportunity for service and mission from about 5:45 7:00 on Wednesday nights beginning Oct. 8. We have a few suggestions of service projects such as helping set-up the Toy Shop garage sale; putting away food at Christians Concerned after the postal workers food drive; check with Magnolia Manor Apts. to see if we can serve them in some way; make special visits to shut-ins. We are hoping those of you who join this group will also bring some suggestions. Please call the church office so we will know how many will be in this group and can plan our activities accordingly. Marilyn Hugon and Kathy Gibson will be helping facilitate this group. Dear Friends of Cameron Campus Ministry, CCM s 9.30/93 /Challenge.CHALLENGE! The beginning of September Cameron Campus Ministry launched a challenge to supporters to help raise $9,300 and receive 93 donations before We are excited to announce that over $9,300 has already been raised and a generous supporter has pledged to match the next $9,300 raised dollar for dollar!. This will add up to an additional $18,600 to support the ministries CCM offers to the Cameron community. Every gift matters! If you want to be part of this exciting challenge you can support CCM s mission by making a contribution towards that goal. Go to and make an on-line donation or mail your contribution to Cameron Campus Ministry, 500 SW 27th Street, Lawton, OK Rev. Montie Jones Campus Minister Rev. Galeda Jones Campus Minister BUS MINISTRY TO BEGIN ON SUNDAY MORNING, OCT. 12!! God works in mysterious ways to help us serve God s people! Because of a change of job positions, Jim Raber will now be able to drive a people mover on Sunday mornings to bring people in need of a ride to Sunday school and take them back home after worship. The route and timetable will be determined by the number and location of passengers. If you know someone who needs a ride or if you would like a ride, please call the church office, , and let us know. There are steps to help riders get into the people mover and it is a very comfortable ride. What a joy it will be to see some of our members who can no longer drive back in worship with us! The Children s Choir will sing THIS SUNDAY in Traditional worship service. The choir members need to be in Sunday school at 9am this Sunday to practice our music!! It is going to be awesome!!! 3 Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle, Minister from the TOLLEHOUSE As the NFL season has begun, the greater talk isn t about football, but instead domestic violence as players have been charged with abusing their wives, girlfriends, and children. The legal system has yet to play out, but all players have been convicted in the court of public opinion. This has reminded me of the call that men have in the household to be Christ-centered leaders. Even beyond our call to be not abusive, it is a call to love as Christ would love. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength and the second greatest was to love others as we love ourselves. You can only truly love others if you love God. The way to do both is to engage in the practices of faith: to attend studies and worship with our families so that we can grow in faith together you don t show love of God by staying away from God; it s hard to love people when we re not connected to God; and you aren t connected to your church family when you don t attend. When Jesus said to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength he meant to give our all being fully connected which isn t the case when we attend church once or twice a month. Men, we are better husbands and fathers when we live out the greatest commandment and our love for God so that we can love our family, our church family, and others. I saw a saying that speaks to a fatherdaughter relationship that we can extend to others: A father should be the standard by which a daughter judges all men. May we fully love God and set the standard! May God s Peace Be with You, Greg SERMON FOR SUNDAY September 28 Ten Bridesmaids Matthew 25:1-13 Winifred Bailey Director of Traditional Worship and Music What a wonderful worship experience we had on Sunday morning and Sunday night. All who attended were indeed blessed. The choir, although small (they were tired from singing all weekend at the retreat), did a wonderful job of their two anthems. The introit Bow The Knee is one that we don t do too often; however the words, music and message are exceptional. The anthem, Good Shepherd of My Soul was new and had a great melody with an Irish air about it and a familiar hymn in the middle, The King of Love My Shepherd Is. The service music that Amy Wilson played as well as accompanying the anthems was wonderful. We are so privileged to have Amy available occasionally to play for Tom when he is gone. This week the Children s Choir will join the Chancel Choir in singing the Introit, Look At the World. This anthem, composed by John Rutter is a beautiful anthem. The children have been working very hard and when the two groups come together, the results should be wonderful. The anthem Sunday is A Thanksgiving Hodie. The Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle will continue the sermon series: The Kingdom of Heaven is Like This week the topic will be Ten Bridesmaids. The scripture is Matthew 25: Come hear the Children s Choir! There is a place saved for you in worship. Come, you will be blessed. KATHY S CORNER Winifred Kathy Gibson, Ministry Coordinator Have you noticed how many young couples have been attending worship in the past couple of months? (I sure hope you have because welcoming newcomers is the responsibility of every one of us!) We are so fortunate to have these young people and their children (and expected children!) as a part of our church community. Attending church is really not the popular thing to do in today s culture. But there are still many of us who continue to believe it is necessary to come together in worship and fellowship in order to face each day with grace and courage and the love of Christ for those with whom we come in contact. Being a Christian isn t always easy. In fact, it is often very difficult. I think that is why so many people don t even try or they give up because they don t have the support of a loving community of faith. The Spirit of the Lord is upon each one of us because we have been anointed to share the good news of Jesus Christ and to make disciples for Him and for the sake of the world in which we live. Shalom, Kathy
4 Tara Cook Director of Children s Ministry, Preschool & Mother s Day Out Every morning I walk my girls to the school doors and say Go and be good Disciples of Christ today! I m not sure where I picked this up it is kind of like Happy Hearts and Good Attitudes or bumpers and bubbles! I have my own catch phrases that are unique to me and for the most part they only make sense to the people closest to me or those who work around me. I ask my girls to be Good Disciples as a simple reminder to let those around them see and know that they have Christ in their heart but it also serves as a reminder to me as well. Those mornings when I am running late and the car in front of me is going at a snail pace or when the clerk at the grocery store is rude, I often need a reminder to show them grace and be the Disciple that God has called me to be. It isn t always easy to have a happy heart and good attitude or to catch my bubble when I want to say something unchristian like those are the moments when being a Disciple of God is the most crucial. I think all of us strive to have a Christ-like behavior, but let s be honest the enemy knows our weaknesses and works hard to use those to his benefit. I want for my daughters (and myself) to have the armor of God and the protection of his word to fight the enemy and live the life that Christ has so graciously given. For I know the plans I have for you plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. We are so blessed to have a God who loves us unconditionally and all he asks in return is to be a faithful servant/disciple. I hope to see you this Sunday morning at Sunday school and worship. Come and allow God to bless your life and start your week out with a new determination to Go and Be Good Disciples of Christ! *A Special Thank You! to James Funkhouser for his dedication to the Children s Ministry and Justin Sommer for his time on Wednesday mornings with our Preschoolers in Chapel! UPCOMING CHILDREN S MINISTRY EVENTS *Children s Ministry will have a fun day on October 12 th More details to come!! *Trunk or Treat is October 26 th in the North parking lot from 2:00 p.m. - 4 p.m.! Start thinking of ways that you can participate in the annual event!! Faith, Grace, and Hope~ Tara Justin Sommer Worship Leader and Youth Director We have hit another week, and we have all sorts of new things that we are faced with each time we start a new week. This past week in the youth ministry world we had another great elevate! Our last Elevate we continued our walk with Jesus and looked at the question: Why Does Jesus Matter? Our students had a chance to ask that question and then we formed an answer through the scripture we read and the conversation that we had. It is a neat thing to be in that youth room on a Wednesday night and see all the students at different places in their walk with Jesus. We put our series of A Year With Jesus on hold as this week we meet as the youth group of Duncan to celebrate See You At The Pole. See You At The Pole is a nation wide day of prayer for students, so we will worship as a community in Duncan together on Wednesday evening at the high school auditorium. Then, the next 2 weeks, Kathy Gibson will be bring a message as our youth start up the October Olympics on Wednesday nights. So many great things are happening! It s not about us it s about Him Justin SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27th: Elevation Trampoline Park in Edmond, cost $25.00 plus lunch money. Leave at 10:00am Return at 5:50pm SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th: Move items for Toy Shop rummage sale from 2:00-4:00 Pizza party afterwards! Wednesday October 1st: October Olympics start at 6:00pm!
