AN UPDATE ON BOY SCOUT TROOP 4417 The Troop has had a very eventful and fun year. We have 20 active scouts meeting in the Adult Activity Wing Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The meetings are fun and energetic with learning and games. In the past year, we had 24 scout rank advancements. We have 1 scout that has achieved Life rank and 2 are well on their way toward Eagle. Our Big News is that Matthew Patrick has been awarded Eagle Scout!! His Eagle Project was installing handicapped accessible ramps for the Empire Public School campus. Matthew plans to attend OU in the fall. He is trying out for the OU Pride marching band and majoring in Political Science and Law. Congratulations Matthew we are so proud of you!! SUMMARY OF TROOP ACTIVITIES Summer Camp at Tom Hale Camp Reservation (many Merit Badges earned) High Adventure camping, hiking, canoeing at Buffalo National River in AR. Trapper s Rendezvous in Newton, KS. Mountain men reenacting and lots of trading with 6,000 other scouts. Camping and Hiking Merit Badges at Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. Cooking Merit Badge at The Corn Maize in Grady County. Aviation Merit Badge at Mountain Lake. We have reservations this summer for another High Adventure experience. 9 scouts and 8 adults will be traveling to the Florida Keys for Sea Base. They will live on a Tall Sailing Ship for 7 days, learning the art of sailing and living on the seas. The Troop appreciates the FUMC for being our chartered organization. The support you give to the Troop and the scouts allows the scouting program to be life changing for most of these young men. The Troop especially wants to thank David Dowell for being our Boy Scout Church Liaison. He has been dedicated to our success for many years, but has decided to step down from this position. We will miss him and want the Church to know how much we appreciate him. James Warburton is filling his position. James first-hand knowledge of the activities of the Pack and Troop will be beneficial and we are glad to be working with him.

3 NEWs FrOm the Staff from the TOLLEHOUSE The end of the OSU vs. Texas Tech basketball game this past Saturday had an ugly ending. If you aren t aware, OSU player Marcus Smart went into the crowd as his momentum carried him when he was trying to make a defensive play. A Tech fan, who should be old enough to know better, said something to Smart. The stories vary so we can t be sure if it was a racial epithet or a generic rude and stupid-rude comment. Either way, Smart reacted and pushed the fan, which has drawn a three-game suspension. Smart has had issues with his temper in the past, and the fan has engaged in rude behavior with other teams. Essentially, both share some of the blame. I thought of this in light of this past Sunday s sermon on shining the light of Christ into our dark world. This incident reminds us how important it is to reflect the way of Christ, which often contrasts the accepted behavior. Even if the basketball situation hadn t escalated to the point it did, the uncivil behavior adds to the darkness in our world. What some people are willing to put out on social media illustrates this as well. Yet a little bit of light can shine in the darkest areas, and our collective light shines ever brighter. Christ be seen. May God s Peace Be with You, Let us be intentional about letting Rev. Dr. Greg Tolle Senior Minister For those of you who may not know, we deliver an FUMC mug to each person/ family unit who visits in our worship service for the first-time. This mug contains a packet of scripture cards, a brochure about United Methodism and a bag of microwave popcorn. We tie on a note that says Thank you for POPPING in to First United Kathy s Corner Methodist Church last Sunday! We hope you found the service meaningful and that you ll come back soon. I m asking for help in identifying our visitors to Sunday morning worship. Many sign in, but also there are many who don t. If you are sitting by someone you don t know, PLEASE introduce yourself and ask them to put their contact information on the registration pad. It is very frustrating to look over the registration pad and see that someone signed their name, marked first-time visitor, and put no other information! Please help us out! Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Each one of us is called to be a part of that mission. Shalom, Kathy Gibson Ministry Coordinator Music Notes We enjoyed a great traditional worship service this week with the observance of Scout Sunday. The additions that Scout Sunday made were very impressive and the awards of God and Service were very meaningful. The White Cross Ringers rang the Introit, Toccata. This group works hard each week to perfect the music shared in worship. This week we were glad to have Tina Bonner subbing. The group did a great job on the number. The Chancel Choir sang We re Gonna Shine Our Light. This anthem is very lively and contains This Little Light Of Mine in the middle of the anthem. Verna Wilson did a great job on the solo in this anthem. Aren t we lucky to have such talented musicians in our church!! Sunday the music includes the Chancel Chimes playing the Introit. The Chancel Choir will sing The Gift of Love with Jim Williams singing the solo. Rev. Dr. Tolle will continue on the sermon series, From the River to the Mountain: Upping the Ante. The scripture is Matthew 5: Come worship with us You will be blessed. Winifred Bailey Director of Traditional Worship & Music What a wild week it has been with date changes, weather and all sorts of things that we have been working through! I would like to apologize for all that did not get word about the rescheduled date for the Sub sandwiches. I put it out there as many ways as I knew how to our church family. I just didn t know who all had purchased tickets from the students. I am sorry if you missed it, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the church via justin.sommer@duncanfumc.org or call the church office. We also re-scheduled our Re-Ignite conference here at the church to Saturday March 1st. The youth will be meeting at 9:30 and talk about how we can be a leader in your ministry, Then, the group will do missions work the rest of the day in Duncan! So it will be a great time to mark your calendar and be a part of! Sunday, February 16th Roots Starts up at 9:00 am in the morning! Connexion Service Starting at 10:00 This is open for everyone of all ages. 6:30 in the Youth Wing Wednesday, February 19th Elevate 6:15! Justin Sommer Worship Leader and Youth Director
4 NEWs FrOm the Staff We are going Hollywood!! This past Sunday we started a video with our kids that will be shared with the congregation on Feb. 23 rd which I hope will pull and tug at your heart strings and entice you to sign up to be Sunday School teachers in our Sunday School rotation! We have so many opportunities to serve within our church with Children s Ministry being one of the most important (yes, I am biased!). As a mom, I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child. By being a member here at FUMC, Duncan, YOU are my village! I need you and your Christian values/morals to help me be a better parent and also to show my daughters what it truly means to have Christian fellowship and love. By serving as a Sunday school teacher, Wednesday Night Live teacher, or a teacher for Children s Church, you are being the village to other parents as well. Please pray about this and ask God for his guidance in which area(s) you would be willing to serve. I can t wait for you to see our video you will be blessed!! *Parents remember we have a Children s Council meeting on February 20 th! We will be discussing Sunday school and, of course, VBS!!! Preschool/MDO Ministry- We are going to the Post Office to mail our Valentines this week!! Our kids are super excited to make this trip!!! We are also having our Valentine s parties this Thursday and are making special Valentine treats for our parents and friends! Our Preschool teachers and MDO teachers/staff have been working very hard to make our Valentine week a special one. The kids so enjoy having a party and getting the opportunity to show off their school to their parents, family and friends! A special Thank You to Jerry Marlar for all he does to make our Children s Wing look and smell clean every day! He spoils us all and we appreciate all the extra work he puts into our program! Happy Valentine s Day from the Preschool/MDO Staff! We love you!!! Faith, Grace, and Hope~ Tara Cook Director of Preschool/MDO, Children s Ministry & Nursery Coordinator Thank you to my dear Choir family for the family meal before the funeral and, most of all, for singing at my granddad s service. The angels used you to minister to our family; they heard God s voice through you. Thank you to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee for the meal after the funeral home visitation. Our family all sat down together and had a wonderful time remembering our family through the years. We were deeply blessed by the food and by the Spirit. Thank you, my church family, for your support to First United Methodist Church every Sunday. Because of your faithful prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness, Duncan FUMC is a place where everyone can find God s love and comfort. All these blessings are available to every member of our church family because we have plans in place and ready at a moment s notice when needed. Our church is alive and thriving, ready to celebrate every happiness and joy and to share the burden of our losses and trials.
