Sentence of the Day: I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. John 6.51 Prayer of the Day Gracious God, you have placed within the hearts of all your children a longing for your word and a hunger for your truth: grant that, believing in the one whom you have sent, we may know him to be the true bread of heaven and the food of eternal life, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be glory and honour for ever and ever. Amen. Readings 1 st Reading: 2 Samuel OT p. 265 Up until this point in the story of David s kingship, things have been going well. He has won battles against many enemies that Saul, the former king, was not able to win; against the Philistines, the Moabites, the Ammonites and the Arameans. David has shown kindness to King Saul s grandson, Mephibosheth, and demonstrated humility before God. David s growing power and pride, culminates in his selfish misuse of power over Bathsheba and Uriah. Next week we will hear God s response to this sinister part of David s story. 3

4 Psalm: Psalm 14 APBA p. 233 The psalmist laments over the corrupt and violent behaviour that is in the world. Fools have said in their hearts, There is no God is not a statement of belief or lack thereof; it is not an expression of atheism. Rather, those who say such words deny that God is concerned with their actions and thoughts and as long as they can get away with what they do, or persuade others of their right, then all is ok. They deny they will be called to account for what they do by God, as David illustrated when he failed to weigh the consequences of his actions. 2nd Reading: Ephesians NT p. 179 This reading ends the long and lofty prayer that began in chapter 1. It is as if we are eavesdropping while Paul prays for unity, and in this particular instance, the unity between Jews and Gentiles. Words such as filling, dwelling and "glory" connect to Old Testament language about the glory of God filling worship spaces, such as in the tabernacle and temple. One possible interpretation of this prayer is that it praises the God who brings Jew and non-jew together to be a temple filled with the glorious presence of God through the Holy Spirit. Gospel: John NT p. 90 We break from the pattern of readings from Mark s Gospel to spend the next five weeks reading chapter 6 of John. The chapter begins with the story of the feeding of the 5,000 with bread and fish, and in the weeks ahead we will follow a lengthy and profound theological reflection about Jesus as the bread of life. This story is in all four gospels and intentionally resembles Holy Communion. It appears in both Mark and John s Gospel alongside the story of Jesus meeting the disciples on the Sea of Galilee during a storm. Whether to the hungry in the wilderness and or to those terrified in by life s storms, Jesus challenges those he meets to a deeper relationship with God that transcends material provision. 4

J. S. Bach Organist: Greg Crawford Sunday 8 th July was a day of celebration for these 5 young people from our congregation, and their family and friends who came to support them. Abigail, Hannah, Jacob, Joshua, and Ryan were Admitted to Communion in the 9.30am service, where they remembered the promises made on their behalf at their Baptism, and were welcomed by the Church to receive the Sacrament of Communion, to strengthen them on their journeys of faith. 5

6 . 6 For your Prayers this week The Nations and People of the Earth: The people of Greece, suffering in the devastating bushfires, those who have lost their lives, and those who have lost their homes. People around the world who have sufferes in recent natural disasters by fire, flood, earthquake and tempest. The Church and its Mission: The Anglican Church in Rwanda, Primate Abp Onesphore Rwaje, his clergy and people. The Parish of St John s, Adelaide, Peter Balabanski, Rector. Theological Colleges and Religious Communities. The Church of Bangladesh, giving thanks for the work they do to further God s mission in the world. At St Andrew s we pray for: The Faith & Fellowship Group, meeting through the week. The Wardens, Ian Gray and Sally Zimmerman. The grace to be just, kind and humble in whatever we do. Ourselves and our Community: Those working in the legal system judges, magistrates, barristers, solicitors and clerks. All who are in need or crisis, and unsure of who can help them. 7 At St Andrew s Notices WELCOME: We welcome Dr Greg Crawford as our organist this morning. Greg is a Professor of Palliative Medicine within the University of Adelaide. Greg is an experienced organist and we are very pleased that he is able to play for our service, and we thank him sincerely. SEEKING IDEAS FOR FUNDRAISING: Do you like a Quiz Night? Enjoy browsing a trading table? What about singing along at a hymn-fest, or enjoying a fashion show? Or perhaps you have some other great ideas on how to help the parish raise some extra money? It is planned to re-launch the book to coincide with the upcoming 170 th Anniversary celebrations. To print the book professionally will cost around $400 for an initial print run of 200 copies. 8 News from the Parish Council Parish Council has continued its important work in the parish over the past few months. Here is a summary of some of the more topical issues: The first of our revamped Market Days was held last month. Parish Council was pleased to support the efforts of Allan Edgar, who has been largely responsible for liaising with the new sellers and updating our branding of this event. More help for Allan in this venture would be greatly appreciated. The Parish Representatives to the St. Andrew s School Board for the period (inclusive) have been ratified by Parish Council. Angus Netting and Kristian Downing will fill these roles again, and we are grateful to them for their work in this important relationship. The paving around the tree in the Parish Centre Forecourt has been removed, as it was being lifted by the tree roots, and was a health and safety issue. This will also allow the tree to be more healthy, as its roots are no longer being encumbered by the paving. The Bell Tower project has reached its next stage, with a Development Application being submitted to Walkerville Council. The Council have sought initial approval from the State Heritage Department, prior to considering it themselves. 8
