THE FEAST OF SAINT MARY MAGDALENE 28th JULY Today in the parish we have honoured S. Mary Magdalene especially at the Parish Eucharist and Evensong. St. Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest and possibly most misunderstood saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God's mercy and grace. The precise dates of her birth and death are unknown, but we do know she was present with Christ during his public ministry, death and resurrection. She is mentioned at least a dozen times in the Gospels. Mary Magdalene has long been regarded as a prostitute or sexually immoral in western Christianity, but this is not supported in the scriptures. It is believed she was a Jewish woman who lived among Gentiles, living as they did. Some suggest that Mary was originally a great sinner and that Jesus cast seven demons out of her when he met her. After this, she told several women she associated with and these women also became followers. There is also debate over if Mary Magdalene is the same unnamed women, a sinner, who weeps and washes Jesus' feet with her hair in the To be continued next page...

Gospel of John. Scholars are sceptical this is the same person. Despite the scholarly dispute over her background, what she did in her subsequent life, after meeting Jesus, is much more significant. She was certainly a sinner whom Jesus saved, giving us an example of how no person is beyond the saving grace of God. During Jesus' ministry, it is believed that Mary Magdalene followed him, part of a semi-permanent entourage who served Jesus and his Disciples. Mary likely watched the crucifixion from a distance along with the other women who followed Christ during His ministry. Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection. Legend has it that she spent the remaining years of her life living in solitude, in a cave. She is the patroness of converts, repentant sinners, sexual temptation, pharmacists, tanners and women, of contemplative life, glove makers, hairdressers, people ridiculed for their piety, perfumeries, and many other places and causes. Interestingly enough in the Roman Catholic Church it was only in 2016 that Pope Francis elevated what was a simple memorial day for Mary Magdalene in their calendar to a full Feast Day. Pope Francis issued a decree called Apostolorum Apostola ( Apostle of the Apostles ). It recognized S. Mary Magdalene s role as then first witness of Christ s resurrection and as a true and authentic evangelist. Preaching about S. Mary Magdalene Pope Francis highlighted Christ s mercy towards a women who was exploited and despised by those who believed they were righteous but she was loved and forgiven by Him. Her feast day is a call for all Christians to reflect more deeply on the dignity of women, the new evangelization and the greatness of divine mercy. May we be encouraged by her example and upheld by her prayers thanks be to God. (GNN)

Thank you to the parishioners who have given the carpets for the drawing room in the Rectory. I had been involved in most aspects; relevant to my age, at St Paul s and when the bells were installed in 1960 it was another group for me to join. It was male dominated then, so was difficult to break into the older group. I was eventually able to visit the tower and begin to learn. I started ringing at the beginning of Ringing at Burwood had a young active, enthusiastic band but not a lot of experience. I used to visit other Sydney towers to get more and had rung 12-quarter peals before I left for the UK in Peals were a rarity in Australia, I was not experienced enough to ring one at that time and also there wasn t the opportunity.

Ringing in the UK was a great way to meet locals and gain more ringing experience, as there were so many more towers, with a church in every village and most of them with bells. Ringers collect towers with bells like one collects postage stamps. Australia only had 23 towers when I learnt, 9 of which were in Sydney compared with 60 in Australia now, 15 in Sydney and 15 in country N.S.W. There was another Sydney ringer living in London when I was there who helped me to have the opportunity to ring my first peal. I rang it at St Nicholas Hurst, in Berkshire on 20th July This was the 59th tower that I had rung in the short time I had been in the UK. I went on to ring a total of 8 peals during the four years I lived and worked there. I returned to Sydney at the beginning of 1972 to find some of the towers, which had previously been unringable, refurbished, so I was able to add to my total of Australian towers. I have rung in all the ringable towers in Australia and New Zealand. The 50th anniversary of my first peal was this week and I wanted to ring another peal to commemorate this. The band consisted of 2 local Burwood ringers, ringers from St Mary s Cathedral, St Jude s Randwick, 1 from Orange and 2 who ring at several towers. We rang St Clement s College Bob Major in a time of 2hours 53 minutes. It is a musical method and I enjoyed the ringing. Thomas M Perrins (C) Rung to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first peal for Pam Brock on 20/7/1968 at St Nicholas Hurst, Berks I still travel around NSW and the rest of Australia to ring either for ringing festivals, help with teaching or to ring a peal or quarter peal. I have now rung 108 peals, which although it sounds a lot in comparison to many, it is a small number. There are ringers in the UK that have rung over The average time for a peal is 3 hours so that is a large number of hours in ones life. - Pam Brock

We had 11 ringers travelling in three cars to All Saint s Parramatta and to St Hilda s Katoomba. It was lovely to welcome Hannah Campbell who was visiting from the UK. She learnt to ring at Burwood in 1993 and came to visit her sisters Penny who had just had a baby and Helen. They are all ringers. The peal of 8 bells at Parramatta are a similar weight to Burwood but not quite as easy to ring. This was a new tower for several of the ringers, but we did manage to successfully ring several methods. One of our ringers left us here so 10 of us drove onto Wentworth Falls for lunch. The weather started to change here with some rain and a cold wind. We were due at Katoomba by 3pm and there it was even colder, I m sure it was snowing somewhere. St Hilda s is in the main street of Katoomba and their bells are very new. It is a ground floor ring of 6 bells. They have some local ringers who have only been ringing for a short while, but are progressing very well under the guidance of an experienced Sydney ringer who had moved to live in the mountains. They really appreciated our help, as they were able to practice things, which they can only do when there are more experienced ringers.

Last Tuesday s recital was beautiful. Katie and Nathaniel sang and played exceptionally well. As well as our beautiful worship of God and our care for all people, the recital series is establishing St. Paul s as a centre of excellence in music. Those who come to listen to our excellent performers benefit from the great beauty of the performer s artistry. The performers themselves get the opportunity to perform in front of an appreciative audience. Tuesday s recital was yet another example of this: fine music in a beautiful setting with an appreciative audience followed by terrific refreshments. The recital series at St. Paul s has been, and continues to be, a great success. Thank you, Sheryl, for organizing such a wonderful recital series. Part of the success of the recital series are the refreshments after each recital. Today was no exception. Thank you, Jane, Bob, Rosemary, and Caroline for all of your help. Thank you, also, to Margaret who does such a great job as our front of house staff. With every blessing to one and to all. Peace, James. St Paul s has recently held another Hub. It has been gratifying to see the number of Service Providers that are prepared to give up time in their very busy days to attend the HUB. Once again the morning was well attended and many people were able to get their needs addressed. Food is always the great mediator with morning tea and a sausage sizzle on going throughout the morning. Thank you to David Ip and the team from Anglicare who do a wonderful job in organising the whole morning so it runs smoothly. The next Community Hub will be on Tuesday Sept 4th.

Thank you very much for coming to last Tuesday s recital. A glance at the programme showed us we were in the company of some of the great composers, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Their music surrounds with assurance of beautiful melodies and harmonies. Katie Miller-Crispe showed a love of this music, singing with a clear, lyrical tone. It is encouraging to hear young singers, of Katie s calibre, being wellschooled in the Art Song, be it English, French or German. In the Marzelline s aria, from Beethoven s opera, Fidelio, O wär ich schon mit dir vereint, (Oh, were I already with you united, and might call you husband! A maiden could, what she thinks, confess to only half ) Katie sang this with the drama demanded of the role. Her interpretation of Schubert s Lied der Mignon, with her singing of the plaintive melody, and the accompaniment s rather tempestuous mood of the middle section, was one of the recital s highlights. Nathaniel is an accomplished pianist, and he is obviously very much at home as an accompanist. Katie and Nathaniel said they had had a lovely experience performing at St Paul s. Thank you very much, Katie and Nathaniel, for sharing your talents with us. Sheryl Southwood Director of Music

If you have any used stamps then please bring them to Church with you and leave them in the box at the back of the Church as these earn money for the work of the Anglican Board of Mission Australia. Leave at least a 2cm border around stamps.

There is a wide diversity in how Anglicans prefer to receive the bread and wine at Holy Communion; some stand, others kneel, most receive the wafer in the hand, a few wish to have it put on the tongue. Most like to guide the chalice to their lips, others like to take it into their hands, while others prefer not to touch it at all. None of these variations really matter but simply reflect Anglican diversity. However, if you were to go to a Eucharist in some parts of the Anglican Communion, especially in Canada, you might find something like the following written instruction, taken from an order of service in Brockville, Ontario. Communion Practice: Everyone is invited to join us at communion. For health reasons and out of concern for other worshippers, we ask you not to dip your bread into the wine. If you are uncomfortable receiving from the common cup the practice in our Diocese and in our parish, is to receive the bread only. Thank you. Judging by the number of people who do it, many must imagine that not receiving the chalice to the lips but dipping the wafer or bread into the cup (called intinction) is a more hygienic way of receiving the sacrament. Nothing could be further from the truth. Apart from the obvious fact that the wine they are dipping into has already been in contact with the lips of others, with all the best intentions in the world, the fingers of those who dip often come in contact with the wine. Disease can spread more easily through the hands than through the lips, making this method the most unhygienic. In addition, the Prayer Book directs that all consecrated wine must be consumed before it leaves the church, meaning that someone, usually the chalice assistant or the celebrant, has to drink the left over wine that has had multiple contacts with hands. In order to protect others, it is perhaps understandable to want to dip if one has sore lips or has a cold but, as indicated in the quote above,

the consensus of the Church is that taking only the bread is fully participating in Communion. However, although the Canadian Church might give it a go, it is most un-anglican to lay down the law, even if that were possible. Therefore St Paul s will in future follow the custom of some other places by having an additional chalice with a small amount of wine for those who wish to dip. At both services this will mean a second chalice following the first. Those holding the wafer will be offered this chalice. Thank you to everyone who is dropping their loose change in the box at the back to help fund new linen for our sanctuaries. Already some money has gone towards the new red burse and veil we used at Pentecost and we now have almost enough to purchase our first new altar cloth for the high altar. As our altar is narrower than some, the maker will be able to cut two cloths from the one length of fabric thus reducing our costs for a second cloth. With everyone s help, our altars will be looking wonderful by Christmas and if we keep up the practice of throwing in our coins we may in time be able to carry out repairs on our wonderful frontals. Donations needed for new socks & jocks. Our next life jacket run will be on Thursday 26th of July. Thank you for your generosity and continuous support.

Over the years the parish has benefitted from the generosity of parishioners, not only when they have been active members of the parish, but also at the time of their death. 25 It was hard not to be moved, encouraged and impressed by the plight and rescue of the boys marooned in the North Thailand cave. People around the world responded to the boys' youth and the danger they faced and by the generosity and skill displayed in their rescue. I was particularly moved because what I was seeing done for village boys in Thailand was so different from what was appearing in our adult media: bank executives and insurers profiting by imposing misery on their clients; evidence of unethical and extortionate behaviour in so many businesses that it seemed a royal commission into almost any section of corporate behaviour would yield similar results. In addition to that, the rat run from international agreements and diplomatic conventions and from anything not grounded in crude self-interest, and the snarling, demeaning exchanges characteristic of public life. All these made it seem that the neoliberal vision of human well being as unregulated competition for wealth, encapsulated in browbreating poor and grieving Indigenous women into taking out unwanted funeral insurance, had captured the minds and hearts of the whole world. Watched from a distance, the events in Northern Thailand showed that this was not so. They disclosed a mature human response to misfortune and a sophisticated culture. The news that the boys were lost in the cave generated concern and attention throughout Thailand. These boys were everyone's sons. Volunteers flowed in from all parts of Thailand, offering their labour and their gifts to the people who could rescue them. International volunteers also offered their services, and were welcomed for the skills they brought and incorporated into an international team that worked cooperatively and tirelessly at the risk of

their lives. This encapsulated a society working effectively out of compassion. The Thai coordinators of the rescue also emphasised communal relationships over individual interests. They kept the media informed of the situation and what was being done each day, but kept them away from the cave, the divers and the children. They did not inform the parents that their own child had been rescued until the safety of all was guaranteed, so holding them together in mutual support. Then they allowed them to greet their children from behind glass. They also kept the rescued children together in hospital, allowing them to continue to support one another after their ordeal free from intrusive media. These things could be seen clearly. But a deeper Thai cultural strand ran in the story, the counterpart of the emphasis on the competitive individual in the West and in business everywhere. Its strength can be gauged when we ponder how the boys apparently emerged undamaged after spending more than a week together in a dark cave, without light, with very little food, without the support of family, and unsure whether their whereabouts would be known or that they would be found alive. That is the stuff of nightmares and of isolation. Yet they seem to have been brought together rather than isolated by the experience. Their resilience speaks of a strong Buddhist culture in which the boys were used to struggle, found meaning in attending to the welfare of others rather than their own, and drew strength from meditative practices that set their perilous predicament within a broader human horizon. They were fortunate in their coach. He embodied the best of their culture in foregoing food to keep them nourished, taught them meditation and whom they knew as 'Brother' naming him at once as one of them, and one whom they would like to emulate. It was characteristic of him that his first message from the cave was to apologise to the parents for the

distress the cave expedition had caused, and that he should be the last to be rescued. His thought was consistently for others. This culture of compassion and of community based on respect was also displayed in the handling of the rescue and the subsequent care for the boys. It spoke most deeply to those of us who watched from a distance. Events like these are epiphanies that give light and hope in times of darkness. Afterwards we may expect that competitive individuals and media will see a buck to be made out of the boys and their experience. They will try to seduce the boys and their families out of their own culture and then spit them out. We may hope that the example and the values of their admirable coach will persuade the Wild Boars and their families not to sacrifice their cultural horns. - By Bp Mouneer Anis, The Bishop of Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa, Dr Mouneer Hanna Anis, considers the roots of the current global migration crisis. Over the last few weeks, there has been significant discussion about immigration in the media. Western countries, particularly those in the European Union, and the United States, are very concerned about the number of immigrants who arrive on their land by using illegal methods. During the last few years, thousands of these immigrants have lost their lives by drowning in the Mediterranean Sea as they attempt to go from the shores of north Africa to Europe. Many of these immigrants are from sub-saharan Africa. Some of them walk the entire way to reach north Africa. I know that it is not easy to welcome large numbers of illegal immigrants. It is also risky for many countries to do so, especially during a time when terrorism is a major threat to security of almost all countries. This threat is behind many of the summit meetings about stopping illegal immigration that occurred over the last month.

I appeal to the leaders of western countries to re-evaluate the reasons for such phenomenal rates of immigration. Most of the immigrants are economic ones. They are so incredibly desperate in their own countries that they are willing to risk their lives by illegally crossing borders and using dangerous boats to cross the Mediterranean. No one would risk their life, let along the lives of their families, unless they were desperate. I hope that the leaders of the European Union and the United States will gather together and develop a strategic plan for increasing sustainable development in the countries from which these immigrants originate. Sustainable development will improve the availability of job opportunities, and will also help in improving the economic status of these countries. If such development occurs, I am sure people will be happy to stay in their countries among their own families. Another reason for immigration is the conflicts and wars in countries such as Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and South Sudan. The warring parties in these countries often obtain their weapons through western countries. This flow of weapons needs to be controlled in order to stop the vicious circle of violence. I am sure that western countries are involved in development, but the need is much greater than what they currently contribute. Providing more help to refugees countries of origin today will help western countries tomorrow. We are conscious of conflict in Syria, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Middle East and we pray for peace and goodwill amongst all people and that the persecution of Christians might cease. God of the nations, whose kingdom rules over all, have mercy on our broken and divided world. Shed abroad your peace in the hearts of all people and banish from them the spirit that makes for war; that all races and people may learn to live as members of one family and in obedience to your laws; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pray for St Paul s: God of mercy, strengthen us to help shape a parish where diversity is a source of enrichment, compassion is common, life s poetry realized, suffering lightened through sharing, justice attended, joy pervasive, hope lived, the hum of the universe heard, and together with you and each other we build what is beautiful, true, worthy of your generosity to us, an echo of your kingdom. Amen. (Ted Loder) Pray for, St Matthew s, Zababdeh, (West Bank, Palestinian Territorries), our Anglican Communion Partner: We remember especially their Parish Priest, Fr Saleem Dawani, and his ministry in the parish. We remember also Jameel Maher, who acts as the St Matthew s partnership link person with us. May both our parishes be blessed by the link we are establishing. Pray for the Church s mission: Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honour of your name. Amen. (Author unknown) Pray for our Children s Church: The Lord said, Let the little children come to me and do not forbid them for such is the kingdom of heaven. Bless, Lord, your children who now stand before you in prayer. Help them to understand the depth of your love. O Lord, bless our Children's Church and all its future endeavours, that through it we may glorify you with

your Father and the Holy Spirit, now, always and forever. Amen. Pray for peace: Lead me from death to life, from falsehood to truth; lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust; lead me from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. Pray for all in need, remembering especially this week all those who have no one to pray for them, or who do not know how to pray. Pray for the sick and their carers: Andrew; Joyce Bannister; Margaret Baseley; Barry Brandy; John Burns; June Cameron; Andrew Connolly; Scott Cameron; Rodney Chesham; Hilary Davies; Vicky Dodman; Dave Ernst; Fahim; Florence; Paul Gibson; Caroline Huet; Matthew; Margaret Hayes; Heather; Bruce Hellyer; Bishop Ivan Lee; Jan Morgan; Y Nhan; Nicola; Erene O Connor; Alister & Sally Palmer; Paul Phillips; Robert; Jean Rennick; Jean Storey; Nancy Thompson; Elsa Sorensen; Reg Vine; Margaret Wheatley; Bill Whittle; Bob Woods; In love and charity please remember the recently departed that God may grant them a place of refreshment, light and peace. Pray, too, for, Esma Pennual Cranley, Ernest Evans, Cecil John Allen, Nancy Conley, Annie McGowan, Violet Elliott, Leslie Bullock, Charles Ecob, Minnie Starkey, Frank James Coe and for any others whose year s mind falls around this time. Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them! A mid-week Eucharist will be held in the Chapel of our Lord's Passion on Wednesday at 10.30am. Commemorations noted by the lectionary this week Sunday 22nd July Mary Magdalene Wednesday 25th July James, Apostle & Martyr Thursday 26th July Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary
