Redeemer Lutheran Churchh th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Redeemer Lutheran Church The Transfiguration of our Lord Sunday, February 11, :40 am Grow In Christ Share His Love Our Mission Statement: As Christians based on the solid foundation of God s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ welcoming all into our Family of Believers. Values: Truth, Community Engagement, Family of Believers, Teaching, Healing/Caring, Joy, Prayer WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. The service is also projected on the screen. Please visit our Welcome Center in the Narthex for additional information about Redeemer. CELEBRATION WORSHIP TODAY While we use newer and older songs in all our services, it is our custom to use a greater portion of newer songs in thee later service on the second Sunday of each month. OUR THEME FOR TODAY: Today we ascend the Mount off Transfiguration to see the radiant Christ before we follow Him to the Cross in Lent. We appreciate that God also stands beside us on our mountaintops of experience but also holds us up as we go through the valleys of suffering. We Come Into God s Presencee (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. WELCOME AND GREETINGS (We welcome our fellow worshippers.) 1

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) OPENING PRAYER HYMN Come To The Mountain... W&P 32 (*) INVOCATION and CALL TO WORSHIP (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: In the beginning was the Word, and Word was with God. C: and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. P: Through Him all things were made; C: without Him nothing was made that had been made. P: In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. C: The light shine in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. P: The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. C: We have been his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. P: Let us see today, with the eye of faith, what the disciples saw on the mountain top. C: Fill our vision with your beautiful light. Amen. (*) PRAYER OF CONFESSION P: We humbly offer a prayer of confession to our loving Lord. C: Lord, I confess that too often my eyes are glued to the light of a screen and the light of this world, rather than to the light of Jesus Christ. Instead of listening to your Son, I have listened to the voices of fear, worry and sin. Instead of asking for a double portion of your Spirit, I have been satisfied with a portion of the world s values. I confess that I have often kept you in a box and expected no great things from you, neither seeking your power nor your presence. Forgive me for having a very small vision of my very big God. Do not let me leave this service without the encouragement and transformation of seeing your power and glory. Amen. (Silence for further personal reflection and specific confession.) (*) ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS P: The Lord says, Your sins are forgiven on account of my Son, Jesus. Now listen to him! Trust him, and you will live. He is the Light of the world. By his power, he will not let your food be moved nor your lives to be shaken. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) HYMN OF PRAISE Behold He comes riding on the clouds Shining like the sun at the trumpet call Lift Your voice it's the year of Jubilee And out of Zion's hill salvation comes There's no God like Jehovah, There's no God like Jehovah, There's no God like Jehovah! There's no God like Jehovah, There's no God like Jehovah, There's no God like Jehovah! Behold He comes riding on the clouds Shining like the sun at the trumpet call Lift Your voice it's the year of Jubilee And out of Zion's hill salvation comes (repeat) (*) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: God of grace and glory, before your Son turned his face to Jerusalem and Mount Calvary, on another mountain you revealed his glory. Sustain your Church both by his glory and also by your grace, and help us to reflect the glory of your love to all; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. (Please be seated.) ANTHEM I Want To Walk As A Child Of The Light Angelic Chimes God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS 3

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN L: The Old Testament Reading for the Transfiguration of our Lord is from the thirty fourth chapter of Exodus. 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord 's presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord. Exodus 34:29 35 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from the third and fourth chapters of 2 Corinthians. 12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 13 We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. 1 Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 3:12 13, 4:1 6 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) 4

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN (*) RESPONSE By faith the mountain shall be moved And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail For we know in Christ all things are possible For all who call upon His name We will stand as children of the promise We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward Till the race is finished and the work is done We'll walk by faith and not by sight (Repeat) (*) HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." 6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) 7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" 8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. Mark 9:2 9 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please be seated.) CHILDREN S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) HYMN The Power Of Your Love Lord I come to You, let my heart be changed, renewed; Flowing from the grace that I found in You. And Lord I ve come to know the weaknesses I see in me 5

Redeemer Lutheran Church th Avenue SE Rochester, MN Will be stripped away, by the pow r of Your Love. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God Sends Us Forth to Serve and Proclaim (*) BENEDICTION P: In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, C: but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. P: The Son is the radiance of God s glory and the exact representation of his being, C: sustaining all tings by his powerful word. P: May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, C: through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 7
