2 Welcome to St. Therese, A Vatican II Ecclesiology Parish Third Sunday of Lent Every day the press reports murders, accidents, front-page catastrophes. Jesus alludes to two public misfortunes from the news of his time. He does not refer to them in the manner of those retreat preachers who are only too happy to exploit a parish tragedy to urge people into the confessional. That is not Jesus style. He does not consider violent deaths as divine punishments for sin. Rather, because he detects in his contemporaries a smug complacency, he warns them. The run the risk of being hardened to the urgency of conversion. Even if each of us is like a tree which foe many years has given ample proof of its sterlility, God is like that patient farmer who gives his fig tree another chance. The opportunity lasts until the Lord s return. It is highlighted by this annual season of repentance. From: Most. Rev. John C. (Jean Pierre de Caussade) A good Catholic should meddle in Politics Pope Francis stated this in Some folks think that the Church has no business getting involved in politics... Some basic thoughts: The word politics comes from the Greek Polis which means City. So our modern word Politics refers to anything pertaining to the welfare, well -being of the city, the community, the people. So, the Church s role is to be concerned with the well-being of others which is thus the domain of politics. It was reported to me that Sunday, 17 March at the 10 am Mass, a man (he has been clearly described) spoke out loud enough for the entire area to hear: Here comes the politics, he is politicizing! Then he angrily got up and left the church with the daughter and wife begrudgingly following him, as he put on a baseball cap backwards. My dear fellow Catholic, I am truly sorry that you are greatly offended by me. Might you be the same person who left the angry voice message on the parish answering machine? I am merely trying my best to live up to the example and command of the Lord Jesus as expressed in the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 25. I was hungry and you fed me. I was thirsty and you gave me to drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Naked and you clothed me. I was ill and you cared for me. I was in prison and you visited me. And then the downright scary part of the passage: Out of my sight you condemned. Into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels, for I was a stranger and you did not welcome me. Since the Second Vatican Council beginning in 1963, the Catholic Church has renewed its call to us to strive diligently to love and serve one another and that God s Preferential Option is for the stranger, the poor, and the little one s of God. Perhaps Saint Therese Parish, A Vatican II Parish is not a good fit for you. Perhaps the Catholic Church with its absolute and marvelous teachings on Peace and Justice is not a good fit for you. You might try Legacy or Sagebrush Congregations or another similar congregation who adhere to the Gospel of Wealth. Please know that you will need to bring along a copy of your 1099 or W-2 Tax Forms which they will require as you register to insure that they received 10% of your annual income.
