2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark is interested in the link between the miraculous activity of the messiah and the awakening of faith. Faith leads people to ask Jesus for healing. Healing leads them to the total commitment of faith. The cure of Peter s mother-in-law suggests more than Christ s extraordinary power over a sick body. In a clipped account, Mark demonstrates his interest in the meaning of the event: the healing of bodies is aimed at wholeness of spirits. This same narrative implies a model for every believer. Made whole by the power of Jesus, we too must devote our full energy to serving the Lord. This model is not easy. Enthusiasm for miraculous cures is not enough. All the crippled and possessed of Capernaum crowd in front of Simon and Andrew s house because they see Jesus only as a wonderworker. Jesus slips away. He takes refuge in solitude and prayer, to search out the real meaning of his mission. He is first of all the sower gone out to spread the Word (Mark 4:3). His word more than his miracles must move us. Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God s continued call to conversion and holiness. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. Pope Francis' Message for Lent 2015 The Vatican released Pope Francis' 2015 "Message for Lent" today, and its focus is on fighting indifference in all its manifestations in the Church in the institutional Church, in parishes and dioceses, and in ourselves. Pope Francis emphasized the need for all Catholics to reach out to those in the peripheries, and to not become selfreferential or self-centered. We become more like Christ, he said, by hearing the Word of God, receiving the sacraments, letting ourselves be touched by the love of the Father and by uniting with others in prayer. We can overcome indifference, he added, by using Lent as an opportunity to form our hearts. The pope's message said, in part: Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each communities and every believer. Above all it is a "time of grace" (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us.... Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.... Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ. In this body there is no room for the indifference which so often seems to possess our hearts. For whoever is of Christ, belongs to one body, and in him we cannot be indifferent to one another. "If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy" (1 Cor 12:26) Every Christian community is called to go out of itself and to be engaged in the life of the greater society of which it is a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away. The Church is missionary by her very nature; she is not self-enclosed but sent out to every nation and people... As a way of overcoming indifference and our pretensions to selfsufficiency, I would invite everyone to live this Lent as an opportunity for engaging in what Benedict XVI called a formation of the heart (cf. Deus Caritas Est, 31). A merciful heart does not mean a weak heart. Anyone who wishes to be merciful must have a strong and steadfast heart, closed to the tempter but open to God. A heart which lets itself be pierced by the Spirit so as to bring love along the roads that lead to our brothers and sisters. And, ultimately, a poor heart, one which realizes its own poverty and gives itself freely for others. Cathy Dee Catholic, OSV Content, OSV Daily Take
